Luongo a Better Player for Ipswich Move
Wednesday, 26th Sep 2012 11:25

Joining Ipswich on a season-long loan from Tottenham is paying dividends for Massimo Luongo, who believes he has already improved as a player.

Sydney-born and raised Luongo, who was 20 yesterday, said: “When I first came here the gaffer said ‘Do what you are good at — break up the play and keep it simple’.

“But then I think he realised that I had a lot more in my locker and my game has become more expansive in the short time I have been with Ipswich.

“I think of myself as a deep-lying midfielder but I like to get on the ball and get the team playing. Obviously the defensive part comes naturally and I would say that I am pretty much a box-to-box midfielder.

“I don’t think the gaffer realised I had a bit more about me technically. At Tottenham there are a lot of technical players and I just used to sit deep and let them get on with it.

“Now I take a bit more responsibility. I am always looking to make something happen and see if I can change the game. I am getting a lot more out of being here than just experience.”

He admits that he knew little about the Championship before he came to Town: “I’m a typical TV guy,” he laughed. “Back home in Australia I knew all about the Premiership and I would either stay up late or get up early so I could see the games on television.

“I didn’t know anything about the Championship to be honest and I definitely didn’t realise it was so tough. Every game is a proper battle.”

So you're not following instructions and see your time at Town as a chance to try some fancy stuff and hopefully get noticed? So when you gave the ball to Ricardo Fuller on Saturday allowing him to score you didn't really fancy trying to rectify the error by chasing back?

So we have a player who is very decent on the ball, can find a pass and get the play going... Jewell signed him because he thought he could "break up play and keep it simple".

Good grief.

Have to agree with JimmyJazz on this one. Luongo is obviously a quality player but i think we saw the problem of loans on saturday when luongo gave the ball away and didnt chase back when he could have easily caught him up, something we may have got from a player we already have, LUKE HYAM.

What is wrong with a player showing to his manager that he has more to offer? I swear some people on this board drive me insane.

I think if he stuck to PJ's instructions he would much less inspiring player than he is, and those piercing runs forward that he has already demonstrated is something to look forward to - and there is not much to look forward to at Town these days.

Its easy to say that a loan player doesn't care . Football is quite a tribal sport and players make bonds with their new team mates quickly. He wants to do well and so people who say he doesn't are talking rubbish.

Jimmy jazz Luongo is the only player to come on twitter and be truthful, apologised for his mistake and said he and the team need to take a long hard look in the mirror, whereas the supposedly more mature players come on and slate the fans with no apologies, Luongo should be proud, he's made 1 mistake so far, how many have jet chops chambers etc made, Luongo is the player who has my respect, old head on young shoulders

One player doesn't a team make. At the moment players seem more worried about giving away a free kick than getting the ball.

I'm afraid as the saying goes - Poor Planning leads to P*** Poor Performance.

No good with Drury clearly. Natural is to sit deep. Drury cant create at this level ,he goes to bits in the final third. Not a hope drury playing at Barnsly , you will see him on the bench for the rest of PJs tenure.

Good to see that PJ is doing some thorough homework on players before signing them.

bet he's regretting it big time now!

@Chris - Why would he regret it? The one thing he needs (as he says) is experience, and that is what he is getting. Not many clubs in the Championship would have taken the risk without insider links (e.g. Klug).
