Evans Still Backing Jewell Despite Cardiff Defeat
Saturday, 6th Oct 2012 20:52

Town boss Paul Jewell was given the backing of owner Marcus Evans after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City. Keeper Scott Loach was at fault on both goals as the Bluebirds came from behind after DJ Campbell’s controversial opener just before the break.

Jewell revealed that he spoke to Evans after the match: “I’ve just had 15 or 20 minutes in there with Marcus.

“He thinks we’ve played well, he knows what’s required and I’ve got his full support and I appreciate that.

“He sees the vast majority of games and I’ve got his full support. I’m very disappointed with our situation at the moment because I’m a proud man but I’m doing everything I possibly can.

“We could have been sat here and I know it’s ‘ifs, buts and maybes’, but we could have beaten Brighton, who were top of the league, and we could have beaten Cardiff today if we had just seen the game out for a little bit longer and not given such a daft goal away today.”

Once again much of Jewell’s post-match press conference was spent bemoaning individual howlers: “Mistakes are costly at the moment for us. They’re not just little mistakes they’re big errors. It’s cost us the game tonight.

“Let’s have it right, we got a bit of fortune with the goal as it was obviously seen to be handball afterwards.

“We had a great opportunity through JET to make it 2-0, then I thought we defended well and the goal’s just come out of the Blue. It was completely a gift.”

Loach himself apologised for his mistakes on Twitter: “Hold my hands up today. Let the lads and you fans down. Will bounce back and put it right against Hull.”

Told about Loach’s apology, Jewell added: “There’s not a lot he can say. I better read his Twitter page to see what explanation he gives.

“You don’t really want to single players out, but there’s no hiding, two goalkeeping errors have cost us the game.”

He admitted his side never really recovered from the first Cardiff goal: “It was such a devastating blow. If someone scores a good goal, fair enough, but it was the manner of the goal.

“They came into the ascendancy, there’s no doubt about that, they put lots of crosses in. They’ve got a good team and they’re a powerful unit, but I thought we defended all right without really looking like scoring the second goal when it was 1-1. At 1-1 we would have taken 1-1 the way we feel after the goal now.”

The Liverpudlian says that after nine games without a win, his team are lacking self-belief, despite having again performed well for much of the match: “We’re making errors. It’s a bit of confidence.

“In the first half we played really well, I thought. We passed the ball well and even at the start of the second half we had some good opportunities.

“We just can’t get that second goal to give us that bit of a cushion. We’re not getting outplayed by anybody. The only team that outplayed us for 45 minutes was Blackpool and that was a bit of a false scoreline anyway. It’s a devastating blow to concede the two goals we did anyway.”

He admits Town never look secure at 1-0: “I think until we that level where we can see games out at 1-0 you don’t really get that feeling. We needed that second goal.

“I don’t think anyone complained when that goal went in, certainly they didn’t. We had a little bit of fortune but I thought we played well in the first half, had good possession, passed it well, hit the post. I thought the two lads that came in — Richie and DJ Campbell - will be better for the game.”

Jewell confirmed that Michael Chopra had been left out due to this week’s race-fixing charges: “With the situation he’s found himself in, I didn’t think his mind would be in the right place, so that’s why he was left out. He’ll be at training tomorrow.”

Midfielder Guirane N’Daw was left out of the 18 and was spotted outside the ground an hour before the match but Jewell says he remained at Portman Road: “He was in the dressing room after the game. He lives in town and he had probably gone to get his wife.”

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay: “It was an horrendous error by both the officials. Campbell punched the ball in with both his hands and I told the ref at half-time what a mistake he had made. It was an awful error and if the linesman had been where he should have been, he would have seen it.

“Ipswich deserved to be in front at half-time and we showed real character, determination and energy in the second half to get back at them.”

Simply cannot keep conceding 2 goals a game! once again individual errors - never known a team to make so many - lack of confidence to go on and score a 2nd - Jewell is tactically inept - he seemed a defeated man in his interview on sky!

Evans must be mad. We need a change. What does he think he will do differently??

His tactics if you can call them that, cost us the victory today.

I was speechless leaving the game, how could we snatch a loss from the jaws of victory???

PLEASE PLEASE WE NEED A CHANGE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

I like PJ as a person, and nobody can doubt his commitment or effort but he's simply just not good enough to turn things around. This would have been a perfect time to sack him and have 2 weeks to get somebody new in to freshen things up. Only positive was DJ getting a goal and hopefully some confidence.

At this rate the good news is Norwich will probably be playing the championship again next season, the bad news is we won't be there to play them!

Jewell is going to get slaughtered but has to count himself unlucky tonight. Perhaps he'll go out and get a new keeper in on loan !!

We passed the ball around well in the first half without creating enough chances, the goal, murphy header and JET's shot were the only chances we had. We created even less in the second half, defence looks shaky. How Evans backs Jewell after the start we have had is an absolute joke, he should be out the door. Another 2 weeks of having Jewell, nothing is going to change. All the loan players we have, we cant score, we cant defend. Recipe for relegation. Cant see us beating Hull in 2 weeks time either.

JEWELL OUT!

I can only assume Evans has not completed contract negotiations with replacement yet. Jewell is finished. He is a terrible football manager. No vision, conviction, or drive. He lurches from one scenario to the next, reacting, moaning anout what he should do,never building. Eff off now, you are not fit for purpose.

Jewell comes across as a nice honest man who knows what he wants but just cannot get there. If in doubt put in more aged overpriced premier league players.

His time is up and the loans are just a final throw of a faded dice. Being honest Jewell has not taken us from fifth in the Premier League to second from bottom in the Championship overnight...it has taken financial mismanagement, dubious expensive signings and no long term plan to get us here.

It will take more than a change in management to sort things out...we need a director of football who will put in a good infrastructure such as a scouting network that covers Europe rather than Premier League reserve games. We need a CEO who is primary a football man and who is not a dinosaur.

Rather interesting on Sky Sports there was an interview with the Academy Director for Liverpool who in a nutshell said whats the point in having young players if they are not given the change to play? Jewell likes his experienced players and is not brave enough to play them.

Please Paul go now

Loach might be an Ipswich fan but he will drag us down as I have said for a few weeks now he is not commanding enough in his six yard box and you cresswell backers he is going backwards very poor. Edwards on the other hand is giving everything he can, who said he is no right back. It's not jewels fault these two made the errors but he did bring them to the club. Dj should of started, chopra out of form but n'daw played well at Brighton at was unlucky to have been dropped for another loan player. The last three games we have played very well in the first half but the second, what on earth do you say to them at half time jewell. Try and hold on it seems!

I agree with peter beagrie on sky 2 panel that ME will give PJ about 15 games before he takes any action on the management front as we seem to be more than a match for the top sides just need to take chances and tighten up on basics but passing and movment looked good today shame very good game apart from result

After reading that What is needed exactly?
I honestly think Paul doesn't know, he plays same system that fails to get the right results every week and just plays roulette with putting the players on the team sheet and even transfers by the looks.
The thing we do need is a new manager, one with a definite direction and a clue how to get the best out of the players we have and the systems we play.
Not going to suggest Mick Mills at all but even he seems to have more of a clue what is going wrong than Paul does, thats frankly embarrassing.

Enough is enough. Today's team talk should have been the easiest PJ has ever given - 'the ref's on our side, you are 1-0 up against one of the best sides in the division, keep it going, and we can win this game' - instead he managed to send out a team that turned victory into defeat with alarming ease. PJ clearly couldn't motivate a lemming to jump of a cliff. It is 2 weeks until our next match the time has come for Mr Evans to take action - before it is too late to save our season.

N'Daw has to count himself unlucky not to be in the 18. I'd have him starting ahead of Drury and seems strange that having had a decent enough game against Brighton that he fell behing Luongo in the pecking order.

I must admit I thought we were mostly terrific in the first half, closed Cardiff down well, good passing and if we'd gone in three up at half time Cardiff couldn't have complained. In the second half I thought we looked tired and we began to sit back, never a good idea when you are only one up.
Only time will tell if PJ can turn it around, not sure why N'Daw was dropped? Wellens looked off the pace understandably. But a special mention for Carlos Edwards thought he was MOM

To coin a particular current phrase of PJ at the moment - "ok let's get this right".....yes we dominated the first 60 mins, yes DJ handled the ball, yes we deserved the lead and YES YES YES YES we proved yet again that we cannot defend. To gift 2 sh*te goals as we did today - Cardiff left with Santa on his sleight to get home. The time to change the manager is NOW Marcus NOW Simon NOW the Town board. That gives the new manager 2 whole clear weeks to work with the team. We are heading down with PJ and that hurts me to say it as (and repeated on this board previously), most of us like PJ and feel desparately for him but IT JUST ISN'T WORKING ANYMORE but we need to change AND WE NEED TO CHANGE NOW.
