Wellens Glad to Be Back Playing
Tuesday, 9th Oct 2012 15:34

New loan midfielder Richie Wellens says he was glad to be back playing on the Portman Road turf at the weekend, even if it hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for him. The 32-year-old Leicester man, who made his Blues debut in the 2-1 loss to Cardiff, had been sidelined having undergone knee surgery in the summer.

Speaking in an interview with Ipswich Player, Wellens said: “It’s good to have played and been out on a pitch again, but it was just a shame we couldn’t get the win.

“I thought we performed well against the team at the top and in the end we’ve made two mistakes and been punished.”

He says one particular game from his time with Leicester stands out: “I’ve had good memories of playing at Portman Road, I’ve had a few wins here over the years, but I’ve also got a few bad memories of playing here.

“I remember coming here a few years ago and playing in the snow, I should have brought my shovel!

“It wasn’t a great day for me as we lost the game, live on Sky and then after a long trip home I got back to see my house had been burgled, so that wasn’t a great day!

“But I also know what a great stadium Portman Road is and I’m looking forward to playing here, getting some games and helping the side move up the table.”

Wellens is with the Blues for a month, his spell coming to an end on November 10th.

oscarwhiting, that's a bit harsh. We asked him to come here, him and DJ were probably our best players on Saturday !!

Carlos was easily our best player, followed by Martin. But i agree, both Wellens and campbell worked well.

Thought Wellens played well against Cardiff, it was after he went off that Cardiff took control of the the midfield.
I think he will stay longer as the Leicester manager has been told to reduce the clubs wage bill after Stevn overspent.

Luke Hyam is the player we should be talking about. We are in the bottom two. I would prefer that position with our players & youth system. Give Hyam murray Merriot Lawrence a go. At least if we give youth a chance we have hope for the future.

Irishtim , this is exactly what we should be doing. since when have we been a club which gets other teams players fit while our own sit on the bloody touchline?

Thought Wellens did well on sat but for the life of me can't understand what people saw in Campbell. For me he scored with a handball and missed a sitter that was it! Chopra & Scotland work much harder off the ball than him. JEWELL OUT!!!

@muccletonjoe. We have to play our players. I agree we need afew old heads to guide them. But if we go down who helps us back up? Certainly not the loan players. I think raw passion can help us at the moment. Hunger & the will to succeed is what we need.

Whilst he is a good player, I am left asking myself the question WHY? is he here , when its clearly a very short term loan only , and Leciester are using Us to get their player match fit.. This is not long term planning and if rumours are true Jewell has upset N'Daw by dropping him in favour of Wellens on sat.

Just WTF is going on at PR these days.

Christ, if Wellens was our best player then i best get to specsavers! He was average at best. Why is he here for one month when there's a two week international break?

He played ok but hardly Steven Gerard!

Can someone please explain to me what the point is in getting this guy in. We get him in for only a MONTH, but now we are going into the international break???

Saying that, just looked at fixtures and even with the international break he can a further 4 games so its not really a months loan at all really more a 6 week loan.......Oh I dont know I give up!!! He's here, thats it!

I tought Wellens had a decent game to be honest. Always showing for the ball off the centre halves and covering if cresswell and carlos went forward but most of all he is a leader. He may only be here for a month but would be happy for him to sign long term. As for Campbell yes he did miss one chance and scored with a handball BUT i dont care if the ball hits him in the face/backside/thigh and goes in as they all count. If we go through the players we have on loan I can see a few of them signing permantly come january/end of season if we are still in the championship.
