Edwards: We're Playing to Keep Boss in Job
Wednesday, 10th Oct 2012 06:00

Ipswich captain Carlos Edwards has laid his cards firmly on the table to own up: “We are playing to keep the manager in his job.”

Successive away draws at Barnsley and Brighton may have ended a depressing run of three defeats on the trot but Town are still second from bottom of the table with Saturday’s defeat to Championship leaders Cardiff continuing speculation regarding Paul Jewell’s future.

Edwards admitted: “It’s all down to the players once we cross the white line and whatever team the manager picks we must go out and give 100 per cent.

“We can only do what we can when we are out on the pitch to help his cause and make the owner and the board of directors give him a bit of extra time. We can only do so much to try to make sure his job is safe.

“He will accept his fate and even if I would love to see him in the job for some time to come I am just one player.”

Edwards said the manager’s position is not proving a distraction and added: “It is not a big topic among the players and they tend to just get on with their jobs.

“We hear the whispers but the last thing we want to do is talk about whether or not the manager is going to be sacked. We don’t want players in a corner of the dressing room speculating about what is going to happen.

“We come into training every day and yes, we do have our concerns, but we just keep them to ourselves. Once the games come round and the manager picks his team we are all in it together.

“We are a good group of lads and when we lost three in a row recently we did not think it was the end of the world. We knew it would get better and we came back with two good away draws.”

".when we lost three in a row recently we did not think it was the end of the world. We knew it would get better and we came back with two good away draws.”

So the 2 draws and then another defeat is acceptable...

If I as a boss had staff that performed that badly I would be out of a job and if I as individual thought that that this kind of performance was good enough I would be highly embarrassed.

Not all of us are on good money and can afford to keep coming to watch this unacceptable standard of performance.

“It is not a big topic among the players and they tend to just get on with their jobs."

I would just like to flag up to the players and coaching staff and our wonderful CEO, you're not doing a very good job.

I'll get me coat..!!!

"We have our concerns but we keep them to ourselves"

Maybe you shouldn't keep them to yourselves, you as captain should be voicing your concerns & maybe clear the air talks could get to the bottom of this awful form

Well if you were all "playing to keep the boss in a job" then you collectively made a total hash of it so far.

You might as well all walk now and lets start a fresh in a lower league were we might win something (even a match to start), and move on from there.....the issue here is what bloody league...

Amateurs at best..

and what is it about the 1-1 draw at barnsley that every member of staff at ipswich thinks is so great?? it was barnsley, not man city

I know what he is trying to say but the way it is expressed suggests they do not really care. I certainly hope that is not the case?

I have to voice a personal opinion here. I don't think the performances have been bad, its just the stupid errors that are costing us as we well know. Saturday, without those two errors we wouldn't be on here discussing this so radically. Paul Jewell didn't ask Scott Loach to make a couple of blunders just to keep up speculation about his job. I don't like the situation any more than the next one of you guys, but it would appear that everybody at Town is trying to alter the situation.

I agree diamond. We are all a team here, from marcus evans to us lot! We all want the same thing and silly individual mistakes are costing us at the moment, stop blaming paul jewell. He has a great squad of players and we totally dominated cardiff in the first half and just lacked confidence and the ability to convert our pressure into goals. If this was PJs fault we would lose heavily, every game without even a whimper. We WILL turn this around. COYB.

So they weren't playing before hand when his job (PJ) wasn't so much under scrutiny? why give it so much effort now if that is the case?

Gibbs, I think saying that our squad is 'great' is a little generous. Personally I think it is one of the weaker Town sides I've seen, with no real character/ leader. I do agree with the point that the standard of football has been ok, just the individual errors is proving to be the issue.

Text i would disagree. I think PJ did very well to come in and steady the ship after the disaster which was roy keane. Agreed, PJ hasnt had a wirlwind of a time here but he is clearly trying his best. As for sticking my head in the sand, im not, im just realistic. We cant compete with teams in this league anymore financially. Upsetting, yes. But the sooner everyone realises that the much happier everyone will be. COYB.

I agree with the sentiment, Carlos, but your words are hardly convincing! Admitting that you know the manager could het fired soon and that you have concerns I think just undermines him more!

I do fail to see how people can still have faith. Yes, we've been playing some good football, but we've not got a home won in seven months!! Plus, when every player is making these individual errors, couldnt you call that team errors? This slump in form has been there over 18 months nowand I just fail to see how the team is evolving in any way.

PJ bloody out, and out now!

Well done Gibbs there r lots of true blues out there I know that don't comment like us because they can't be bothered to argue with others but we all want the best for itfc and I honestly think PJ will turn it around albeit a bit late in season but if u are a manager in a everyday job and the department isn't performing they single out the people with help of manager and get rid of problem people and ME is a good business man I think a change of skipper will help someone vocal higginbottom to gee everyone up. sat the one person that was really pissed after second goal was him passion in him

I am so bored of ITFC right now it's untrue!
Loved this club since I was 5 but my enthusiasm over the last 5 years has crashed. A sad admittance but its no con incidence it's since Evans took over.

Sorry diamondgeezer u aswell trueblue I think it's only us on this site that go and watch these games cos it amazes me wot people come out with. think about it before u jump on the band wagon I think it's taken along time because behind the scenes it was Roy keane that really messed itfc up from top to bottom and I think we are finally getting back to where we want to be that bloke absolutely destroyed itfc he couldn't have done worse if he tried and I think being a very successful player (and rich ) and having all those very good players around him he couldn't deal with the ability of our players and I don't think he is a people's person and doesn't know how to talk to people and I think the players played with fear but anyway era over and we have a decent manager now

THIS CLUB should never be in a position it finds itself in now, it has LOYAL supporters who deserve better than they have been getting. all we seem to get is excuse after excuse & promise after promise, next it will be moaning about the booing. palyers should NEVER keep their concerns to themselves, nothing will get sorted doing this. the simple truth is - the manager, coaching staff, clegg, & certain players must face up to the fact they arent doing the job they are paid for. isnt it about time mr evans showed some power & have a clear out !! whats the worst that can happen
