Delaney Not Off to US
Sunday, 14th Oct 2012 12:31

Former Blues defender Damien Delaney has denied that he told Town boss Paul Jewell that he plans to move to the US in January. The Irishman, who joined Crystal Palace after leaving the Blues in August, says that although he discussed the possibility of a move abroad, he had no firm plans.

The 31-year-old, who is yet to taste defeat in seven games for the Eagles and scored his first goal in the 4-3 victory over Burley last week, has helped the Eagles climb to fourth in the Championship since joining them on a five-month deal after his Blues deal was torn up close to the end of the transfer window in August.

The Cork-born centre-half was out of the first XI at Town during the early part of the season and we understand was offered to Blues legend Paul Mariner, the head coach at MLS side Toronto FC, but another ex-Town defender, one-time loanee Darren O’Dea, was already on his way to the Canadian club.

Delaney told the South London Press that his interest in a move overseas was overstated by the Blues manager: "I know exactly where that has come from, Ipswich's manager Paul Jewell did an interview when I left saying that was where I was going.

"That's not what I said. I had a discussion with Paul Jewell in his office - which I thought was a private conversation - and he has obviously gone and said that.

"When I was at Ipswich I discussed a lot of things with Paul Jewell. One of them was the possibility of going to America. My wife's Australian - so maybe going to Australia. But I never said I was definitely going to America in January.”

He says the short-term contract with the Eagles was ideal at the time: "When I came down here and met [Palace manager] Dougie [Freedman] I think it suited them as much as me to do a five-month deal.

“I could figure out what was going on at Crystal Palace and they get to have a look at me - because in three months they might say 'thanks but no thanks' and see me off down the road.

"There was no point in me signing a long-term contract. I'm more than open to staying. If things keep going as well as they are going - without getting ahead of yourself because we're only seven games in - then hopefully I can do that.

"It's a bit annoying. I don't want the fans to think I'm only here for three months and then I'm going off to America."

Why do players do better away from PR?

whilst not a huge fan of DD , we should have kept him until January at least as Smith clearly cost us lots of points early on. Another piece of bad Jewell management.

One of the biggest errors in Jewell's reign, letting a decent defender leave for nothing and having no back up whatsoever! Delaney is also right that what they say in a private conversation should remain private, he has every right to be mad!

I agree why let Delaney go he was ok & for back up & we have got no cover at all at CB

Must admit i found it strange we allowed him to leave when we had no cover but also strange that no on here seemed to think he was worth keeping untill we let him go!!

doesn't it look as though DD tried the blub story of moving abroad to get a free walkaway? now things seem to be going well at Palace, a longer contract will probably be offered meaning he stays in the UK with an ever improving Palace side who get a free decent(ish) defender. hooray for them and not us. again.

Thought Delaney was mistreated by the fans most the time he was here (apart from when he played left back - he really was sh!te), and in the end by Jewell too. In hindsight Delaney should've started the season alongside Chambers. I remember saying I would have been happy with either Delaney or Smith. Still think Delaney and Chambers could have been the new McAuley and Delaney.

Delaney is fine ie average, so long as he has a decent CB along side him Otherwise he is utter pants. No loss tbh .

The only issue I have with Evans is WHY let ANY player leave for nothing? How the hell did this guy become a multi millionaire with this policy of chucking money away?

Who cares? He did not want to play for the club so good riddance and most definitely does not justify a story!!

floridaboy you seem to miss the fact that 99.9% of players will play for the club that pays them the most.No loyalty in footie these days!!

Constantly lost his man could not pass but was good at hoofball. Some people have short memories. Clearly told PJ he was off abroad so off he went. Would have got nothing for him at the end of the season and no doubt on big wages.

very disappointing letting him goal giving the lack of cb's at the club. espically seen we had no cover. not going to set the world alight but could do a job

@levington Why do players do better away from Portman Rd?

The answer is easy we hard a hardcore of moronic fans who wouldn't know a good player if on fell on them. But take great pleasure in blaming them for everything that has gone wrong with the club with their lives. They boo them on the pitch blast them calling them unwarranted names until the player has no confidence. Then they leave its a new lease of life fans are supporting him.

Do you mean the same way Chambers was at Forest and Loach was at Watford? not just Town fans but footie fans in general then!!

It does make Delaney look a bit like a liar though lol which is why he's probably annoyed. Paul Jewell can argue he let him go for that reason.

The fact is, whether Delaney told Jewell he was going to the U.S in Jan or not, we shouldn't have let him go. We had no cover and it was incredibly unprofessional of Jewell to jeopardise the club like that.
