Jewell Admits Relegation Form Very Worrying
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side’s “relegation form” is “very worrying” with the season now around a quarter of the way through. Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hull saw the Blues remain in 23rd place in the Championship.

Jewell, who considered his position in the wake of the weekend loss but is set to continue as manager, conceded that Town’s position is increasingly concerning: “It’s very worrying. That’s 11 games gone, nearly a quarter of the season, and we’ve got seven points. That’s relegation form, isn’t it?

“You can build it up whichever way you want, but that’s the way it is. We didn’t come to Hull and play them off the park and have been done late on, we’ve come here and we’ve been second best all afternoon.”

Despite Tigers’ sub Nick Proschwitz netting the second of his two goals in the final minute, Jewell felt his team, which had gone ahead through Jay Emmanuel-Thomas in the first half, deserved little from the match: “In the first half I thought we were very, very average.

"We scored a really good goal and then in the second half I thought we improved a bit.

“When it was 1-0, we had a couple of opportunities to maybe get a second. But once they equalised, you could see their momentum kicking on and us taking a backwards step. That’s a confidence issue.”

He says regaining that self-belief is no simple thing: “Confidence is a big thing in football and getting it back isn’t going to come easily. No one gives you anything for nothing in this game.

“When it becomes a little bit nitty gritty, a little bit 50-50, we haven’t got enough people who stand up and put their foot in and are strong. We lose lots of little battles which end up becoming big, big ones. That’s why we’re losing games.”

Jewell gave midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and keeper Stephen Henderson their debuts at the KC Stadium but the Blues boss felt it was the team overall which was under par rather than the new players not settling in: “I was disappointed with the way we played, that’s no reflection on the new players, it’s difficult when you come in and I thought the goalkeeper played well.

“Nigel came in and it was a tough game and we’ve got a lot of people who haven’t played a lot of football, but that’s not an excuse. At 1-0 we should have been able to do better than we did.

“The same old things have sneaked in today. We’ve been leading the last four games and we’ve come away with two points.

“I know what it’s like when you’re losing games as a player, you get that fear factor. You’ve got to get rid of that fear factor or you’re going to be in trouble.”

He admits that with Town having gone 10 games without a win a victory in one or both of this week’s home matches against his former clubs Derby and Sheffield Wednesday is absolutely crucial: “The next game’s only 'must win' if it’s the last game of the season and you need to win it, but the next game’s vital for us.”

I am at a loss why your still here paul. The late numerous loans a sure sign of someone saying "what have I done" then doing anything in vain hope will cover the chasm. You should take the mans way out and resign your position before you take whatever spark may be left out of our beloved club.

His tactics have been aweful. Can't blame the players for that. Also it seems as though we lose whenever jewell makes a substitution to gain solidity. Failing dismally.

It's a car crash at the moment. Shocking, but impossible to take your eyes off. Odds are stacked against PJ and you know that things must change or he will be out. It would be snsafional if he could turn it around from here.

Despite the supposed backing of the owner & PJ's apparent night of soul searching, his departure over the coming week has to be imminent. Regardless of the result against Derby his position is untenable. Questioning his own ability publically, while his team are already on the floor confidence-wise following another lifeless defeat, has to have been the final straw for ME. I suspect the wheels are already in motion. If not, God help us all.

Curbs Is too long out of the game, surely? One thing is for sure, I have little faith in the powers that be making the right decision if Jewell does leave..

My job as a Commercial Manager involves a lot of interrogation of statistics and analysis of figures so I had a few minutes spare and knocked up a spreadsheet based on our statistics this seasons matches and the projection is truly bleak.

Currently after 11 games we average the following:

0.4 points at home
0.83 points away

Projected across the remaining games both home and away the figures don't make pleasant reading.
9.2 points at home all season
19 points away all season
Giving a paltry 28.2 points for 46 matches.

If you're looking for some solace in Ipswich scoring goals then it's depressing:
Scored at home 1.0 per game
Scored away 0.67 per game

Projected across the remaining games both home and away the figures are.
Total scored home 23
Total scored away 15

Goals against also makes for very unpleasant reading.
Conceded at home 1.8
Conceded away 2.0
Projected total goals conceded home 41
Projected total goals conceded away 46

Summary for Season 2012/13:
Total Points: 28
Goals For: 38
Goals Against: 87
Goal Difference -49

And PJ is still in charge......WHY??

To have a 2 week international break and come back with such an abject performance tells the story.

Go now.

Please leave now PJ - Do the decent thing - you are way out of your depth.
Your tactics are shocking, substitutions are senseless, your media skills are pathetic and your dealings in the transfer market are an embarrassment.

"We scored a really good goal and then in the second half they scored two. That's 2-1 and you don't get points for 2-1"

A team is built around partnerships. At the moment we don't have effectively partnerships down the flanks–players who work together up front and in defence. The result is we have crosses pouring into our box every match, and it's no wonder the CBs and keeper crack eventually. This kind of thing is sorted out by savvy managers with personnel and formation adjustments.

Hull Game-Most of their attacks down their right, the Egyptian prominent, and as aresult both goals from that side.
Cresswell in penalty area for both goals;leaving 1st Murphy and 2nd JET to be beaten easily by Hull wideman resulting in two goals FROM TALL TARGET MAN.
Does Jewell not arrange to scout the opposition, are the scouts up to it.ARE ANY OF COACHING STAFF UP TO IT(Apart from Klug).I dont think so.

Love the fact he makes excuses then says but thats not an excuse!! Sums up his tenure of late, contradicting himself at will. This is PJ's team and PJ's mess. His position became even more untenable when he said he was considering his future then stayed. No-one will have faith in him. Surely the only reason he's still here is that ME is still sorting out the replacement? If not and ME really does think he's still the right man then we are absolutely stuffed
