Higginbotham Feels Sorry for Jewell
Monday, 22nd Oct 2012 06:52

Loan defender Danny Higginbotham says he feels sorry for under-fire boss Paul Jewell, who he says was one of the main reasons he came to the club. The 33-year-old’s one-month spell is due to come to an end after Tuesday’s game against his old club Derby but is keen to extend his stay.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Hull, Higginbotham said: “I just feel sorry for the manager because he puts us on the pitch and some of the things that happen, like conceding in the way we have, are disappointing.

“It’s very difficult for him. He’s a very proud man and at this moment in time he’s obviously not enjoying his football.

“If you’re not winning games, you start to question yourself. Everyone in that dressing room is gutted about the situation.

“The manager was one of the main reasons I came here and I’ve got nothing but respect for him. He tries to protect the players as much as possible. Only we can turn it around and I honestly believe we can do that."

Are you trying to drive the players out of the club too now KingChopra? I think you must be a budgie in disguise.

I feel sorry for Jewell too, as I am sure he works hard to do his best and is personally hurting a lot. Management failures at football clubs are quite commonplace (especially here of late!) so Paul should not take it all too personally - it comes with the game. If Jewell leaves soon, as I expect he will, I wish him all the best for the future and thank him for trying.

It's rare that I want to see a manager sacked, but Jewell has to go. Better hope the new manager is a fan of you, Danny boy!

I feel sorry for him too, because he's simply out of his depth these days. He can't inspire the players to give their all, he can't coach them to better themselves, he can't spot a good long-term buy in the transfer market who wants to come and play for him, he can't make clever substitutions, and with all of this, at the end, he can't win games.

Sad, blunt, but true.

DurhamTownFan - I give you Cresswell, JET, Taylor, Chambers, Hewitt, Loach as long term buys. The rest I can't argue with.

... Says a player wanting to sign on for a last hurrah contract?

I have lost any care for Jewell. He has contradicted himself too often to retain any credibility. The fact the owner apparently backs him is insignificant- he offered the same backing to Keane a week before he was sacked as well.

I fully expect Jewell to go if he loses to, or fails to win at least 1 of, Derby and Sheff Weds- at that point we would realistically be at least 3 wins from safety... being 2 more wins than Jewell has managed all season so far.

He should have gone over the weekend and let Brian Clug take temporary charge of the team until a young and hungry manager can be found. Failing that, how about Mick Mills and Matt Holland - guys who just love the club! They can do no worse!

Another player who hasn't been here 2 seconds talking when he shouldn't!
