Hutchings: Jewell Still Town Boss
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012 23:08

Paul Jewell remains manager of Ipswich Town tonight, despite this evening’s 2-1 defeat to Derby County at Portman Road. Assistant Chris Hutchings took the post-match press conference, held almost an hour after the final whistle.

Hutchings confirmed that Jewell is still the Town boss: “He’s manager of this football club right at this moment. That’s how it is.”

Asked whether that situation might change before Saturday, the Blues assistant added: “You need to ask Marcus that question.

“We’re bottom of the league, Peterborough won tonight. We’re going about our jobs unless we’re told otherwise, it’s as simple as that.”

He says Jewell was yet to speak to Evans, who wasn’t at tonight’s match: “I don’t think he has at this moment in time. I think the owner is in Barbados.”

Hutchings says Jewell in his office reviewing the match: “Right at this minute he’s watching a DVD because he’s right bleeped off that we’ve conceded again in the 90th minute, which is very disappointing.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve. You saw on Saturday he was very disappointed and we’re disappointed again tonight.

"He says it as it is and we’ve got to come out fighting again. We’ve got a game to prepare for on Saturday and that’s what we’ll be doing.”

Asked why Jewell wasn’t taking the press conference, for the first time after a game since he came to the club, Hutchings admitted that he had been asked to speak by the club press office and added: “He’s not here because he’s in the office now, watching the DVD and going through trying to put things right because that’s what we need to do.

"I’ve done it before," he continued. "Maybe not before here but at other clubs I have.”

As for the match itself, Hutchings was disappointed that it was the same increasingly familiar story: “I thought we played quite well in the first half and scored a good goal. It’s good that DJ has scored his second goal. Was it an OG or did he sneak it? He’ll claim it.

“Then we let them get in the game for about 10 minutes. They kept possession a little bit better, then Danny Higginbotham made a mistake with a rash clearance and then the keeper spilled it and they popped it in the net.

“From going in 1-0 at half-time and I felt quite comfortable, you go in 1-1 and a little bit disappointed. And to concede late on again is very, very disappointing, although we could have played better in the second half.”

Derby boss Nigel Clough felt his side’s performance warranted the three points: “I think we deserved it on the balance of play. I think once we got the first 20 or 25 minutes out of the way and changed it back to a 4-4-2, some of the stuff we played in the second half was exceptional.

“You’re a little bit worried when you’ve had so much of the game in the second half at 1-1 and it just takes one mistake, one set play and we end up losing 2-1 as we have done in previous seasons here, but I think we deserved it and I’m delighted that Nathan got the winner.”

Time to go Jewell. You said you want what's best for Ipswich. Leave now while a replacement still has a chance to dig us out of this mess we're in. Thanks for trying but it's just not working is it?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's like a circus. I wish the club could be honest with us just once.

Went to the game tonight. All I can say is we are in deep trouble. Apart from first 20ish mins we were dire. No ideas, no direction, and the subs....well they worked a treat as usual didn't they. Can't say I noticed any difference at all!

I hope Hutchings is telling porkies, as PJ has to leave immediately. Please just go man!

Evening Star reported on the website that he had gone, then they took the story down!
Anyway, would be surprised if he is still here come Sunday or Monday, although that should be that now, but then stranger things have happened!

If Jewell has an ounce of self-respect he will resign tomorrow morning.

Ae were once again abject in the second half, Jewell has to go tomorrow as it will be poisonous on Saturday if we lose again.

Speechless. Rubbish second half with most probably a rubbish team talk. I'm not being funny but Derby wasn't even great?! Get in the car on the way home and it looked increasingly likely that finally Jewell would be gone. Yet again I've been let down. Why should the press ask Marcus? He's faceless and is currently in Barbados doing what knows. Bringing DJ off was another silly decision. We sit bottom and yet Clegg and Marcus still think 'JEWELL IS THE MAN TO TURN THINGS AROUND'. Oh and Boyd scores from the halfway line, a player that we could of get if it wasn't for Clegg.

The best thing about tonight was that I actually got the score right and the goal scorer right on the prediction.

Absolutely pathetic! Even if we win on Saturday he needs to go! Wtf is wrong with this club?? I am so f***ing pissed off with everything at the club, Clegg and Jewell need to go now. Not next week, or next month, now! More banners and protests on Saturday. Might as well start preparing for League 1 at this rate. Never been this low about Ipswich in all my years as a supporter. Jewell is a disgrace and needs to leave now, does anyone really think he can turn this around? He is surely just delaying the inevitable.

JEWELL OUT NOW!!!!

He didn't get out of the dugout once tonight, he's a broken man! Just leave now and give us a chance. Anyone who is still backing him is completely deluded! It will only get worse if he stays any longer. Thank you for your effort but please leave in the morning.

Football has got to get back to the heart of the running of the club. It's a rum owd do and I'm punched, Marcus. Doesn't matter to me how the pack is reshuffled, a more hands on manager, a director of football, a CEO with a football background, new coach, all of those. Just do it. Now.

I just dont know what to say, its like helplessly watching an injured animal knowing it should be put out of it's misery while the people who can help it are making there minds up what to do.Please some one do the right thing because we the fans cant.

Burnley have saved Jewell's job tonight, if they would have lost it would of been seven points between us and 21st, Jewell can cling on to Saturday now because if Bristol City lose and we somehow manage a win we could be level on points.

The only people in the whole world that want Jewell to stay are Marcus evans and budgies.... joke

Another thing. I can't believe Evans is in Barbados at a time like this! How can he run the club if he's not in touch with the fanbase?! Disgraceful.

Just got back from the game, its late as I live just south of Peterborough. What a joke our beloved club is becoming, a faceless chairman whom I understand is on holiday! - ITFC is a business whom is struggling for petes sake; a CEO whom is so out of touch of the footballing aspect it is unbelievable and a manager whom is suppose to wear his heart on his sleeve? If that's so why do you insist on remaining seated during the whole game and you sub our man of the match. Come Saturday I'll be making the same journey down the A14 to support Ipswich, I just hope that joke of a manager has the sense to walk before Saturday. As the crowd so rightly put it at full time tonight, we want our Ipswich back.

The fact is whether Evans is in barbados or not, Jewell should walk out of respect for the fans and the club as a whole. I dont want to see anyone sacked, but the matter of the fact is he hasnt jelled with the club or the dressing room and has to be realistic that whether hes trying his best that hes had to many chances as it is and now the club is in a position where it needs leadership and belief that he and his backroom staff can no longer seem to provide. He needs to flee the sinking ship and all we can do is hope that a minor miracle turns up at the door to turn this club we love around!!

No way he's watching a DVD of anything. It's a free day tomorrow, no training, no press, no anything. He'd watch it then. Who knows what he's actually doing. Crying into a pillow, perhaps?
