Clegg: Tipping Point Was Reached
Wednesday, 24th Oct 2012 16:19

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says the tipping point which ended Paul Jewell’s management of the Blues was finally reached after last night’s 2-1 home defeat to Derby County. Jewell, whose time as Rams boss was coincidentally ended after a 1-0 defeat to the Blues in 2008, left the club by mutual consent this morning.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Clegg said: “We’re very disappointed that we have parted company with Paul but we’re in a very results-driven business, a very public results-driven business, and the results speak for themselves.

“The table makes it very clear that the performance of the team over this season hasn’t been what we would have aspired and hoped it would be.

“Regrettably the manager needs to take a lot of the responsibility for that and Paul and ourselves have separated today.

“Some fans may wonder why [the decision hadn’t been made before], but at the end of the day the decision has to be made by the owner and myself. We reached a tipping point. We had conversations with Paul and that culminated in his departure today.”

Clegg says last night’s last-minute loss coming so soon after such a similar defeat at Hull City marked the end of the road: “That was a very important tipping point.

“We thought that after the defeat at Hull at the weekend - which was a bitter pill for us all to swallow, particularly in terms of the way we came away with nothing having been 1-0 up - that we should give Paul two home games as a final attempt to turn things around.

“Obviously, to lose in the way that we did last night in a similar fashion having been 1-0 up again, was bitterly disappointing.”

Asked why he feels the last two managers haven’t worked out, Clegg said: “It’s difficult to put your finger on it.

“We’ve appointed two successive managers who had a good pedigree and background in terms of being experienced team managers who have both been responsible for taking clubs from the Championship into the Premier League. But it’s just not worked here.

“Ultimately you get to a point where you reach a tipping point and you decide it’s in the interest of both parties to part ways, and that’s where we are today.

“I do accept that the owner and I are the only two people at this football club who don’t make the appointment with the benefit of hindsight and we have to shoulder that responsibility, and that’s what we do.”

Tipping point makes it seem as if we weren't already plummeting, which happen weeks (maybe months ago).

If Clegg has pointed that the manager is sacked for the teams results doesnt that make him responsible for the managers results? Therefore he is at a 0% success record with Keane and Jewell and therefore should go!

Any chance we can get someone who knows what tipping point is? For most fans its been a while back.

I feel embarrassed and ashamed and let down. From the fans, not just the club.

Yes we now sit bottom off this league, but in all my years as an avid itfc supporter I've always considered Ipswich Town a friendly family club. No longer do I perceive these views.

The club its changing from the inside out; we no longer play the 'Ipswich brand of football', we no longer promote and encourage our youth players and it seems like the club has alienated itself from the supporters, something Mr Sheepshanks would never of allowed to happen.

But hearing fans chant for man to be sacked and other obscenities worries me greatly; that is not an Ipswich thing to do.. we don't do that, we're different to other clubs, we should be, we no longer are.

And to the bunch of fickle idiots who sat not far behind me in the Sir Bobby.. Why scream and shout ridiculous things at Stephen Henderson!? yes he messed up for the first goal but really!? some of the things said made me shudders, I wouldn't even accept it being shouted at an opposition player let alone a player with the town crest of his jersey.

Ipswich Town Football Club, and Ipswich Town Supporters.. Last night you took away the magic of football.

Very noticeable Clagg accepting absolutely no blame, quite how this is can be the case is beyond me. The malaise started when Jim Magilton was unceremoniously booted for not being a big enough name, the appointments of Keane and then Jewell were made by Clegg et al, the failure to connect with the fans rests with Clegg. The inability to act decisively when we were it was obvious that we were failing on the pitch.

Well said Mr Evans. Move to the South Stand upper. Its deadly quiet up there and no swearing.

We are where we are for numerous reasons. Many of those reasons count for nothing if results on the pitch are there. So let us look forward with hope for happier times , positive results and a re-ignited passion for our club

Oh my God, just how arrogant and obnoxious in this man??!! Read this comment again....

“I do accept that the owner and I are the only two people at this football club who don't make the appointment with the benefit of hindsight and we have to shoulder that responsibility, and that's what we do.”

So, not " Marcus and i accept that we have got it totally wrong TWICE now with the result that this club is now lower than it has been for 50 years plus and we take full accountability for our own incompetence and we ask everyone associated with the club to accept our personal apology for that" Oh no. instead we get " You ignorant plebs who can only criticise after the event, you have no idea do you. But despite your ignorance we will nobly carry on and shoulder the burden of responsibility that is ours alone"

This man has absolutely no idea how pompous, arrogant and distasteful that makes him sound or the the extent to which he continues to insult the only people in all this that actually care about anything.

We will go nowhere until such a stain is removed from the Boardroom. I ask you, what a p***k.

WashbrookBlue;

Exactly, I remember in the 90's I was in the Churchmans queuing up for a pre-match drink with my dad and saw Sheepshanks walking past.

" Hey David, more catering staff needed mate!"

My old man said, David Sheepshanks stop, turned around and walked straight over and questioned my father on his opinions of the food and drink, prices and how long he normally queues. He then shook our hands and said "I value all supporters opinions, good and bad. After all I'm a die hard blue myself! Enjoy the game."

Will ITFC ever be like that again? I'm afraid not.

Wtf?

I got 'thumbed down' for suggesting that we hardly need to be told the 'Tipping Point' had been reached?

How dumb are some on here?

Clegg is the Chief Exec.

The buck stops at the top in any business.

The owner is exempt.

Clegg is responsible.

As angry as I was last night, I didn't start chanting Jewell to be sacked. I'm all fine with banners and that but the chanting was very disrespectful. But it was the right decision to sack him, but really should of been ages ago.

Now for a manager to appoint who hasn't JUST been sacked by any club i.e Mick & Owen.
