Town Interview Shearer
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 19:28

TWTD understands that former England skipper Alan Shearer has been interviewed for the position of Town manager. The ex-striker’s only previous managerial experience was eight games as boss at Newcastle United at the end of the 2008/09 season.

The Magpies legend, who like Town owner Marcus Evans has been in Barbados this week, couldn’t prevent his already-relegation-haunted club from dropping into the Championship, managing only one win and two draws during his time in charge. He left that summer and was replaced by Chris Hughton.

Since that spell Shearer, 42, has been linked with various jobs, including the currently vacant position at Blackburn Rovers, while working as a pundit on Match of the Day

Capped 63 times by England, scoring 30 goals, Shearer was reported to have been a potential Town target when Roy Keane left the club 21 months ago.

Earlier today, Blues striker Michael Chopra, a one-time team-mate of Shearer’s at Newcastle, said he’d very much like to see him at Portman Road: “I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager. Such a good person and worked and played under some great managers, including Sir Bobby Robson.”

However, despite Shearer's undoubted profile and experience of playing the game at the highest level, comments made by chief executive Simon Clegg at last night’s Supporters Club AGM hinted that a man more experienced in management would be the club’s preferred choice: “This is not going to be a high-risk appointment.

“We need to have someone that we’ve got confidence in, who has got the necessary experience and skill-base to get us out of this current hole and get us to where we want to go in the long run.”

The Blues are likely to interview a significant number of candidates with Simon Clegg having indicated a great deal of interest in the job vacated by Paul Jewell on Wednesday.

with the right people around him we could do alot worse.... understands the game, and would get the respect of the younger players as well as the older ones......

Clegg and Evans need to be sensible, we dont need a high profile pundit who has achieved nothing in management...COYB

Maybe he was being interviewed as a striker; on loan from the BBC for a month?!

Surely Not?

Paul Jewell has a better CV than Alan.

I'm... not so sure about this, but.. well, there's so many names in the hat there's bound not be someone who we all totally see as our first choice. Will get behind him like we all should if he's the next manager though!

One thing in Shearer's favour - the last time we appointed a young Geordie manager who struggled at his previous club, he didn't do too bad a job...

I will never forget Shearers comments when we lost 9.0 to Man U and Shearer was a Blackburn player. His words were there are no easy games in the Premiership apart from Ipswich. So Egg head Shearer, there are no bad manager potentials for Ipswich apart from Alan Shearer.
Oh and Megson to but only because hes a ginger.

I think we should avoid such a 'big name' appointment. Shearer's short spell in management ended in failure as he couldn't keep Newcastle up, so what really are his credentials for the Ipswich job? We can't afford to get this wrong!

I don't comment often on here, but this Shirley is a wind-up!?

I'd take Smegson with gritted teeth over Shearer.

Not in our current position... need some experience to get us off the bottom... maybe as a Number 2 to a more experienced manager, like Harry !

Could do a lot worse than Shearer, i think he'll be a top manager in time. That said, he's a complete novice, and I think we need someone with experience. I would prefer us to get in a Harry Redknapp (unrealistic I know) or Mick Mccarthy type (Joe Royle even) until the end of the season on a short term deal to get us out of this mess, then look for a bright young manager in May. The thought of Burley coming back interests me too. They say never go back but I think Burley is a good manager, encourages a good brand of football and clearly loves and fits the club. He's also better on a limited budget which he might have to be. Maybe he could unearth us a few dutch gems like last time a la Wilnis and Reuser.

no thanks , we need a manager , not a pundit . if evans is looking for this sort of person it's for high profile reasons for his company , not for footballing reasons for ITFC

Objectively speaking, this stinks of an Evans publicity stunt more so than the Keane appointment. The guy has no managerial credentials.

On the other hand, we'll be on Sky Sport News a lot more...again...

This would show that Evans is more concerned with profile than talent...

Wouldn't be surprised that Harry Redknapp was trying to get jobs for his MoTD mates by advising Evans that this would be a good move.

We need to be careful that we're not just going down the high profile route again, he may have good knowledge of the game but he's unproven. Very risky route to explore.

not my first choice. we all knew that P.J. had to go but, in all honesty, can we trust Evans and Clegg to appoint the right man?? there were quite clearly problems signing players, due to the finances at the club, this won't change! i'm so sorry to feel negative when we should be looking forward to a new era but, i feel the real problems at Town are still very much with us. i live in hope! COYB!!!
