McCarthy: Everything in Place at Portman Road
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 13:01

New manager Mick McCarthy says everything is in place at Town, it’s just that things haven’t gone right on the pitch. McCarthy’s appointment as Blues boss was confirmed this morning.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Ipswich Player, McCarthy said: “This is a good football club first and foremost, and it’s sad to see it languishing where it is.

“I feel for Paul and Hutch and I have spoken to them both. I know how disappointed they are that it didn’t work out for them. When you look around the place, everything is here. It’s just not happened on the pitch.”

He says he will speak to the staff and the squad about why the team has ended up bottom of the Championship: “I’ll take opinions from the coaching staff and the players. Everyone has to analyse their own performance of why the club is where it is.

“I want success here and I’ve got a good feeling about the place, that’s why I’m here. I want to get Ipswich Town going in the right direction, but make no mistake, at the moment the club is in a relegation battle and we’ve got to fight and scrap to get out of it.”

McCarthy says his assistant Terry Connor has a big role to play at Portman Road: “Terry is a fantastic coach.

“He has a good football knowledge and has worked his way up from a community coach at Bristol Rovers to working at the top level.

“He prepares well for games, is good with the players and around the dressing room and he demands high standards. He will be good for Ipswich Town.”

Regarding the number of loan players currently at the club — eight plus short-term signing Nigel Reo-Coker - he admits it’s “not ideal” but understands from talking with the staff that they have “enhanced the team” since they have been here.

Overall, he feels he is inheriting a decent set of players as he begins the task of pushing the Blues up the table and out of danger: “I look at the squad and there’s quality here.”

McCarthy and chief executive Simon Clegg will be holding a press conference at 5pm, which BBC Radio Suffolk is broadcasting live online.

When PJ was appointed (and this is not just from benefit of hindsight) I really didn't understand the optimism. Sure we'd got got rid of Keane and brought in a more likeable guy, but it just felt like the most mediocre choice out there.

I've never really liked McCarthy, but I really do have a good feeling about this. I simply can't see us going down with him and in a couple of years time I can really see us being quite hard to beat. Whether we like his football or not, he'll turn us into a side which will annoy the hell out of our opponents.

Welcome and Good luck. I really believe that Mick and Terry can turn our fortunes around. I also believe that offering them a long contract is a good move - as it sends out a message to the players that the manager will be with the club throughout the length of most players contracts. Just hope that ALL the players start showing some respect for the club and the fans, and play to the best of their abilities.

I will be happy just to stay in this division this season. Mick can build for next season and get players doing what they are supposed to do giving 100% every week.

I give him full credit for speaking to PJ, all the early signs are positive. How many clubs could be sitting bottom of the league with the fans feeling as optimistic as we do ? All bodes well.

At last we have a decent manager along with his assistant terry conner this is the best since the magilton era.
Roy keane sold most of magiltons team for peanuts and brought in rubbish and jewell signed loads of loan players and got no where.
Mick will jiggle around with the team we have and bring in a few youth players to we get to january and then sign his own players.
The people on this site knocking him already should be ashamed of thier selfs he has hardly set foot in place yet.
Go show them Mick what a good manager you are.
One was saying he got the sack from his last job so what so did bobby robson and look at the team he built at ipswich
I REST MY CASE.
