McCarthy: Evans is a Really Good Guy
Thursday, 1st Nov 2012 23:34

New boss Mick McCarthy says he wouldn’t have joined the Blues if he hadn’t hit it off with Town owner Marcus Evans. The 53-year-old was installed as the new manager at Portman Road earlier today.

“I’ve met him and he’s a really good guy,” he said. “An honest, straightforward guy, which I liked. If I hadn’t have done I wouldn’t have taken the job, actually.

“The last thing you need when you’re bottom of the league, with a malaise around the place and everybody struggling is to go and meet the owner and not like him.”

He says it doesn’t bother him that Dublin-based Evans isn’t always around the club: “He’s not a coach. He doesn’t do any massage! I want his support when it’s necessary, and I’ll have that.

“That doesn’t worry me at all. He’s a busy fella, but I think he supports his managers in the right way, by giving them the tools to do the job.”

McCarthy says he’ll assess the current squad before asking for cash for additions to the squad: “I’ve just walked in the door today, it would be wrong of me to start judging people after one training session.

“I’m hoping that I can turn it around with the players I’ve got and get a good feel about the place, get a result from somewhere that will give a bit of confidence back to everybody.

“I think with Marcus it’ll be a moveable feast - if it’s the right thing to do, I think he’ll back me on it, no question.”

Ultimately Evans, who has now owned Town for five years, wants to see the club in the Premier League, but McCarthy says there’s a considerable amount of work to be done before that becomes a reality: “Premier League? I’m talking about staying in the Championship for now.

"I think that the first job is to get them out of the bottom three and stay up, that’s going to be a task in itself.

“We’re a million miles away from [the Premier League] at this moment in time. That’s the ambition but I think we’ve got to get going forward first.

“We’re nowhere near that. That’s utopia for everyone that, the Barclays Premier League. It’s a long, long way away. Let’s deal with the job in hand.

“I want to manage there and I’m sure all the players want to play there, but there’s no chance at the moment, not unless we start pulling our fingers out.”

Yup, I think he probably is a decent guy. We should remind ourselves Marcus isn't doing this for attention, he's one of the few chairmen who show a bit of class in this respect.

He just happened to have taken over during a difficult period in our histroy. A period when about one-third of the Championship has the luxury of parachute payments, and the rest ALSO got rich backers.
It's not hard to do the maths. Well for some it is.

He's fired managers at the right time, never too late, never too early. These decisons have to be measured, and can't be done at the first sign of negative people building themselves into a frenzy.

And he's always backed the manager it seems, who in turn have said good things about him, including the ones who left.

I have no problem with him being in charge at all. He's done nothing wrong.
In fact he's given us our happiest moment in the last few years - ie when he took over - but we need more of those moments ACTUALLY on the pitch though!

We are a club that is very well set for a proper Premier League stay. Not yo-yoing as before. It's just the football team needs to get on a roll. Let's hope Mick will deliver what he can.
I've forgotten what a win feels like.

Mick sounds like a guy who hasn't lost his ideas.
One note on Marcus Evan's, Dublin based? Babrbados based?
Living in Australia i've learnt one or two things about tax write-offs..

Good strong sensible, no nonsense stuff from McCarthy. He has the backing of most of the fans, far more than either of the previous 2 managers had upon appointment. I have a good positive feeling about this one. I'm not expecting miracles straight off, away at Birmingham, but I think Mick will fire some rockets up the backsides of some of our apathetic pampered players (I mean methaphorically like).

Liked what I heard from him yesterday tea time. Speaks a lot of sense and with regards to the owner he is spot on. How many clubs do you hear where the owner is 'interfering with the team selection etc'

Now to see the rockets disappearing up a few of the so called 'stars' in the squad - both young and experienced.

Would like to see Taylor back sooner rather than later though. Would be happy with a point on Saturday. He will certainly get them fired up and hopefully get a response

Cannot wait for the team selection!

Realistically if he gets 5 points from next 5 games he will be successful.

It would be even worse if Evans was a ken bates type interfering individual. Marcus Evans is perfect for Ipswich , lets hope we have a manager who is also. All that matters is results.

I personally feel that it is time that we all started to support our club properly and comprehensively, that means the whole show, Mr Evans, Mr Clegg, Mick and every player at the club (who is prepared to give 100% commitment) those supporters who take comfort in posting insulting comments about the owner and Chief Executive should think twice before doing so, yes they probably have made errors of judgement in the past, I believe however that there was always good intention as regards to the Football Club's success, Mick will be good for Ipswich Town and we should remember who appointed him and who will I'm sure, support him with finances as and when required.

I was about to post EXACTLY the same thing. Spot on. Perhaps Evans thought it would be a simple case of throwing money at our situation back in 2007/08 and we would go up. Many fans thought that when he arrived. But I have always believed the malaise started after the 2005 play off loss. Royle had been performing miracles against the tide of administration, but the loss of players (Bent, Kuqi, Miller, Davis) was too much and the club slumped into depression. This has never been truly lifted, although Magilton came close for a while. But Evans has stuck by us despite his/Clegg's mistakes and we should remember that.

Bit of a contrast with Roy "Premiership in two seasons" Keane.

Re ME and SC, they've done a good job of convincing MM to come (in that he didn't apply so initally wasn't interested). Obviously we don't know how the process went, in other words how much SC was involved but maybe his negotiating skils aren't that bad after all!

Looks like MM will be able to work with ME directly and keep CEO role to the minimum which can only be a good thing.
