Town Confirm Barnett Loan
Monday, 19th Nov 2012 15:50

Town have confirmed that Peterborough United striker Tyrone Barnett has joined the Blues on loan until January 19th. The 27-year-old, who will not be eligible to face his parent club at Portman Road on Saturday, had been transfer-listed by Posh after a breach of club discipline.

Barnett, who TWTD revealed was a Blues target when with Crawley last January, was a youth player with West Brom before dropping into non-league with Rushall Olympic, Telford, Willenhall Town and Hednesford. He broke into the Football League with Macclesfield in the summer of 2010.

After 13 goals in 50 starts and one sub appearance in his only season with the Silkmen, the 6ft 3in tall frontman moved on to Crawley for £150,000 the following summer.

Impressive displays for the Red Devils attracted plenty of interest with the likes of Fulham, Wigan and Stoke all reported to be keeping an eye before Christmas. Blackpool agreed a fee approaching £1 million before the deal broke down.

Barnett subsequently joined Posh, initially on loan, for a similar figure in February, signing a deal until 2015. He scored in the Blues' 3-2 victory over Peterborough at Portman Road last season as he netted 19 goals over the campaign, 15 of them for Crawley. This year he has scored just once in nine starts and one substitute appearance.

A week ago, the striker, club captain Gaby Zakuani, Emile Sinclair and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing were all transfer-listed and fined after an incident outside a nightclub in Peterborough city centre in the early hours of last Sunday morning. Zakuani and Sinclair have subsequently been taken off the list and have had their fines quashed.

The move for Barnett is unlikely to be a signal that QPR are planning to recall DJ Campbell with the Loftus Road club unlikely to get permission to draft an additional player into their 25-man Premier League squad despite Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora suffering injuries.

A number of Championship clubs, including Birmingham, Barnsley and Brighton, were also believed to have been interested in signing the frontman.

The signing takes Town's loan total back to eight, six of those - Barnett, Stephen Henderson, Danny Higginbotham, DJ Campbell, Bilel Mohsni and Bradley Orr - domestic loanees with only five permitted in a matchday squad. The other two loans, Daryl Murphy from Celtic and St Etienne's Guirane N'Daw don't count as they are from clubs in 'foreign' associations.

Very funny how fickle fans are. Chops was 'the man' when he signed. How many fans now never liked him? Lots of negative comments about this one on here!

I think the magnitude of problems facing McCarthy is really sinking in with us ALL now - SHOCKING is the only way to describe it.

I have never under estimated the damage that previous incumbents of the post have created and left, as you know, but I am still shocked at how deep rooted it really is.

EVERY SINGLE ONE of us has to be 100% behind McCarthy and the Club now - to stand any chance of stopping the downward spiral, and possible oblivion.

Not an 'over the top statement' at all.

jas. agree with the majority of your post, but no, we dont have plenty of players who break club rules, presuming you talking about our players night out? was clearly stated at the time that NO club rules were broken. yes, chopra has once and was dealt with(along with bullard). no1 else has done so. fatboy. the story clearly stated from the start that he not sligible for sat. but then, should have known that neway. no loan player can play against his parent club, and while he may be on the transfer list, he is still contracted to them.

I really hope he does well but if you were Peterborough chairman, would you loan him to one of your relegation rivals if he is that good? As for Chopra, I believe he is one of the clubs biggest earners, reportedly 15,000 a week, I just think it is time to draw a line under him and see if he could be sacked for his part in the race fixing scandal, he has bought the clubs name in to disrepute, he is earning a massive wage for doing absolutely nothing and this money could be used in January for rebuilding the squad, obviously I would transfer list him and try to sell him, but I just cant see any takers unless we paid the majority of his salary. Chopra sums up the whole Evans era in my opinion, signed on the cheap, due to off field problems, paid huge wages and achieved nothing, the list is endless, Norris,Priskin, Lisbie, Bullard, Leadbetter, O'Dea, Sumuloski, Delaney, Martin to name but a few

Welcome Tyrone, a striker who Has height, power, pace and can score a few goals. We have been after this type of striker since Bent & Kuqi left. Hope we can sign him permanently as I could see him as the perfect foil for Chopra once DJ's loan has ended.
Not a fan of loans per se but i'm pleased with this and hope Henderson is the 1 to lose out of a place in the 18 as he is no better than Loach, clearly doesn't want to be here and fans have not taken to him.

Ahhh here we go a pittance to spend on salary, in comparison to grossing for a three year contract. I know we can't sign but brace yourselves JC couldn't get us out of this crisis in Januarys transfer opportunities.
Div1 and build from Mr Klugg efforts MM bless him will be gone by May.

Playing Chopra with a big striker would be a revelation i believe. He is a class act at this level and will punish defences without question if hes not spending his time as a one ,having to do all his work outside the box. We lack pace and power ,lets hope this new lad settles quickly and bags a few vital goals

Yep welcome aboard prepare for a short choppy ride. Don't think he'll be able to play against Posh on Saturday but would like to see Moshni given a full run out with Hyam and Smith brought back in. Interesting to note as other posters have mentioned how Mick has hardly looked at Chopra at all and he could be on the move in January, like to see Scotland remain here till the end of the season, he always gives it his best.

Why does everyone harp on about how many goals someone scored, what their goals per game is? It don't matter! Wake up don't matter if have Messi and Ronaldo up front they wouldn't score many because of tripe behind them. When do we ever get wide, beat a man and whip in a decent cross? When do we ever thread decent balls into the box. Good luck to the man he going need it

Why didn't we go after Conor Wickham who would play for the shirt and the fans even as a loanee!

I find it odd weve signed two players in a week who are not dwarfs. At the very least this guy is a foil for the nippy DJ or Chopra. Murphy is a statue who fails to move off the ball. This guy will fight ,bite, barge, barrack, andbollock squeeze his opponants. Just what we need.

Let's see if he comes with the right attitude, first & foremost. At 27 & having only scored 5 goals at Championship level he has lots to prove & by the sounds of it needs to save his career. Ferguson was right to transfer list him. ITFC should have done the same to a few of theirs but didn't have the balls.

Burnham boy, FYI, Norris scored 11 from midfield for us & never stopping running box to box. I would take that now. Would anyone else? Shame he left IMO. Intact for all the critiscm people aimed at Magilton, he signed a few good players & generally did a decent job. Anyone remember the home form? Ok away we weren't great but never got tanked like we do now. MM has a huge task.
