Coach McCarthy Amongst Exits as New Boss Brings in Wolves Scouts
Monday, 26th Nov 2012 10:22

Coach Sean McCarthy and scouts David Hamilton and Mark Seagraves have left Portman Road, while manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed the expected appointments of long-time associates Dave Bowman and Ian Evans to his scouting staff.

McCarthy said: “Me and Terry do the coaching, we’ve got a coach too many. Mark Kennedy will continue doing the U21s and I don’t need another first team coach. Dave Bowman will come in and Ian Evans will come in in recruitment.”

The Blues boss had praise for Sean McCarthy, who was brought to the club by former boss Paul Jewell: “Sean was excellent, he was very helpful in our transition, in our coming into the club. He was very professional and to the very end he was a perfect gent.”

Bowman and Evans both left their roles at Wolves shortly after McCarthy’s appointment at Town with the expectation that they would follow him to Portman Road.

Egham-born Evans, known as Taff, was the Wolves European scout having previously been McCarthy’s assistant manager at Molineux, as well as being on his staff at Millwall, Sunderland and with the Republic of Ireland, including during the World Cup in 2002.

The former Wales international played with QPR, Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Exeter and Cambridge United as a defender and was also assistant manager to Steve Coppell at Crystal Palace for five years and boss at Swansea City.

Bowman, who was the chief scout at Wolves, first linked up with McCarthy and Evans at Barnsley and was with them at Millwall, Sunderland and with the Republic of Ireland, where he also worked under Brian Kerr and Steve Staunton.

McCarthy said: “Dave has been a consultant with me for a long time in terms of scouting and Ian will be a scout as well. [He was European scout with Wolves] and he’ll do that for us as well.

“England, Wales and Scotland are in Europe as well, but he will travel abroad and he’s got a good network in France and Belgium certainly, and he did quite a bit in Spain.”

McCarthy, who says that that will be the extent of his backroom changes for now, confirmed that full-time scouts David Hamilton and Mark Seagraves, both appointed by his predecessor, are no longer at the club:
“No, they’re gone.”

Chief scout Steve McCall, a member of Sir Bobby Robson's 1981 UEFA Cup-winning side, remains with the Blues.

Yes, let's hope our new scouts actually manage to turn up a few Dutch, Swedish, or (why not?) African gems. A number of the latter get recruited into Swedish teams via football schools established in their own country in cooperation with the Swedish club. Or do our UK regulations for work permits etc. make this impossible? Anyway, I hope there is a bit of new thinking going on at the club in the recruitment department. Its's not just about aged PL rejects! There's a lot of young talent out there waiting for the chance to fulfil the meaning of life and become a mega-rich Ferrari owner.

Glad to hear this, was wondering if it was going to happen or not. A least the new guys will have some time to view potential permanent signings when the transfer window re-opens in January.

If you read this Mick try Ryan McGowan at Hearts. Currently working in Edinburgh and getting rave reviews, Hearts fans call him stroller cause everything is so easy. 6ft 3inch CD aged 23 and Australian international.

As Hearts are in so much debt we could also pick him up for a £1m or less!

This is pretty usual when a new guy comes in and hope they unearth some gems
Is Klug still around - I presume so - An area we also need to develop more is our Academy players - Hyam is one who has pushed on and I think is the 'real deal' we have afew other talented ones as well so lets hope they can make a claim - just a shame there are so few fixtures for them to shine - Good news

The final piece of the McCarthy jigsaw. Apart from 11 decent footballers.

How is it possible to be an overweight championship first team coach?

You need only look at our starting 11 to see how poor our scouting has been, as most of them are 'big names' rather than unearthed gems from lower leagues of overseas.

Signings from Premier League teams: Henderson, Higgingbotham, Reo-Coker (Bolton relegated), Edwards, Martin, Campbell
Well known Championship players: Orr, N'Daw, Chopra

Smith was homegrown, so that leaves Cresswell as the only player possibly found by a scout in our starting 11!

Walberswick - back to your best I see.
This set up worked very well for Wolves and certainly they unearthed some good young players. Our continental scouting has been terrible in recent years so hopefully some good leads will be followed up.
It also says something about MM in that these guys all follow him. A close knit managerial/coaching team is vital. Looking forward to a mass of "ins and out" in January.

This sounds like the beginnings of a Stalin-esque "Great Purge", although obviously without the massive wanton bloodshed...

This is no surprise and we all knew it was coming. This bodes well for town and with Klug still here, town will have a good future; hopefully by remaining in the championship. Should the worst occur, we will still have what is needed to return to our rightful place as the Pride of East Anglia; assuming we retain McCarthy and his crew stay. My glass is very much half full now, where as when PJ was here it was half empty. LOVE THE BLUES....ALWAYS!!!!!!

Great news. These two have a great reputation and I like the fact MM does the coaching as well. I don't think Roy did - not sure about PJ.

Good, whether our scouts put names forward but they aren't chased or followed up is another matter, but something has to change and quickly.....been saying for years now that we're not recruiting the quality we need to move forward, get these scouts overseas and stop wasting time scouting players who simply aren't good enough in this country, or if they are we simply miss out!

The invisible man gets his advice from the best in the football business, says Clegg. And he has a complex scouting network.

Result: bottom of the league, -25 gd, bunch of hopeless loans and unemployeds, worst set-up in the club's history.

Don't think scouts really matter.

In May 2008, McCarthy was appointed as the new manager of Southern League Division One side Truro City, following the resignation of Dave Leonard.
On 7 December 2009, McCarthy left the club by "mutual consent" following a 7-2 away defeat to Stourbridge.

The re-building begins, and it has to be this way - only time will tell, but given adequate time, we can only go one way - MUST AVOID RELEGATION FIRST THOUGH, in my opinion.

Let's hope we can retrieve some true IPSWICH TOWN PEDIGREE in the not too distant future.
I think we now have the people (with support from above being absolutely ESSENTIAL) - to do just that.

'Happier Days' ahead. !!
