Points Haul Highlight of McCarthy's First Month
Thursday, 29th Nov 2012 16:32

Manager Mick McCarthy says picking up 10 points in six games has been the highlight of his first month in charge at Portman Road. The 53-year-old took over at the beginning of November and since then has achieved a record of won three, drawn one and lost two.

Asked what the highlight of his first month at the club had been, McCarthy was in no doubt: “Ten points. If we’d played well and only got three points, it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference, so it’s the results that please me.

“And on the back of that there are other things that have pleased me, but the 10 points in six games is the most pleasing thing.”

He added: “When you come in you hope you win all the games, but it’s unlikely. What did I expect? I don’t know.

“If you'd looked at the games, did I expect to beat Birmingham away? I don’t know. Did I expect to draw with Peterborough? I would like to have won that, but overall 10 points from the games is a good return, there's no doubting that’s a good return from the games.”

Let's hope we continue getting 10 points each 6 games we play, that will keep us up! Good old Mick.

Well said Mick, performances go out the window unless they result in 3 points! Feeling a lot happier about our situation than this time a month ago that's for sure!

We are in safe hands with Mick in charge. I feel so much reassured now that we have a proper manager who knows what they are doing and demands the best out of this group of players. Just one month on and the feeling around the club and supporters has been steadily transformed. Happy faces when leaving the stadium on Tuesday night for a change! Lots of hard work ahead but I am a very happy Townie and I haven't been able to say that for a long while!

I agree that results have shown a very welcome improvement. However, let us not forget that the two defeats were thrashings and the defence remains a work in progress. The greatest disappointment for me was the draw against Peterborough at home. We remain in trouble and if we are going to avoid a disastrous relegation then we need to beat the teams around us, especially when we are playing them at home.

I hope that this doesn't sound too negative; it isn't supposed to. I really want us to survive this season, but we face a long hard winter and further improvement is needed.

7 pts from 13 games (PJ) = relegation any day or night
10 pts from 6 games (MM) = play off form at least

Yes it is good if we beat the teams around us and i can understand the disapointment after the draw against Peterborough but we then beat a high flying Forest team! Would you have rather beaten Posh and drawn against Forest? So long as we keep picking up the points it surely doesn't matter who they are against.

It's been said but 10 points every 6 games from the start of the season is play off form.

Keep it going Mick!

But we have got to carry that on to get anywhere near mid table.

He's sorting out the players, the football, and he doesn't talk a load of guff.

I haven't felt this positive for years. I like him.

Now lets get rid of the light blue shell suits.

I am most impressed with our new manager, went to the game the other night and I didnt see him sit down once, shouting out orders through the whole game and the players responded, TC was up there too, a good choice this time, onwards and upwards, Ive got a good feeling they'll keep us up :)

Certainly more points than collated than if we had kept Paul Jewell in charge - no doubt!
The start MM is has made has been quite good and I never expected as soon as he took over it would be win after win but a 50% win rate from his first 6 is pretty good and I can't see why we can't continue in this vein especially as he might get some faces in that he wants in the January transfer window and some out.
It's all about 'Baby steps' - let's first try and pull away from the relegation zone in the coming month or so and then take stock, but so far Mick has done what needs to be done and that is winning on a fairly regular basis.

Wise words from a manager that has impressed me immensely in the 3 weeks he's been here.

I love his passion on the sidelines and was impressed with him going mental at the boys to push up after we went 1 - 0 up Tuesday, as it drives me mad how deep we drop when we have gone 1 - 0 up this season.

What I like about him is he has kept it real. Football isn't a complicated game despite all the flaff on sky and talksport. Its basically team spirit, a very hard work ethic and a modicum of talent.

If he keeps the points tally per game ratio going till January, I think he will make a few changes (not massive I think) and bring a few of his players in to take us forwards.

But as the big man would say, lets get out of trouble first.

I thought Paul jewell honestly tried, but MM has proved that not all the issues were with the squad as the same squad has achieved 10 in 6

10 points from 6 games would give you 76.6 points pro rata for a full season or 1.665 points per game. given that there are 27 games left that would be an additional 44.96 points to the current total of 17 gives a final haul of 62 points (rounded up of course). I'll take that any day of the week and twice on a Sunday. Play offs next season, cheers!

I think the Forest game is the biggest confidence booster. Beating a side far higher than us and pushing for the playoffs. Ok it wasn't pretty but as others have said who cares how we play results are all that matter right now.

The defeats against Palace and Leicester were just indicative of the players attitudes, feelings towards each other and levels of personal and team confidence. That appears to be changing. That may involve shipping out the bad eggs come January but if it means staying up and rebuilding the club thats what needs to be done.

In Mick I trust and COYB.

Never a doubt in my mind.... well there were those two horrendous result's but I consider them a blip that MM needed to see us at our worst... hopefully they are behind us. The future is bright under Big Mick COYB!!
