Jewell Delighted for McCarthy
Sunday, 9th Dec 2012 19:35

Former Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s delighted that his successor Mick McCarthy has got Town moving in the right direction. The Liverpudlian, who left Portman Road by mutual consent in late October, was sounded out about his potential replacements by owner Marcus Evans.

Speaking to Sky Sports Jewell said: “I’m delighted Mick’s got them going. I had a bit of a hand in getting Mick the job. Marcus was asking me my opinions of certain managers.

“I think Mick is the right man for the job. I’ve really got a great feeling for the club, lovely people work that there, great supporters, great facilities, they just need a good run now.”

Jewell, who says he has no immediate plans to look for another management job, met with Evans last week to look back at why his 21 months in charge didn’t go to plan: “I had dinner with the owner Marcus Evans last week in London and we tried to go back and look at where we think we got things wrong.

“I think possibly in the summer we should have strengthened. We tried to strengthen, but we couldn’t strengthen for different reasons, hence we had so many loan players.

“But I felt [moving on] was the right thing to do for the club,” he added. “It’s a brilliant club.”

Meanwhile, a Town U17 side lost 2-1 at Spurs on Saturday morning in a friendly. Scottish first-year scholar Taylor Hendry netted for the Blues.

Whatever some felt about PJ it is obvious he really did want what was best for us. And in not being able to do it himself, at least he was professional enough to be involved with not only the new appointment. To also meet with ME recently shows ME wants to learn. I am quite proud of the way both ME and PJ have gone about this.

Good Luck Paul...I'm sure you will rise again.

I was really pleased when he was appointed, but sadly for various reasons it just didn't happen for him. Seems a really nice genuine guy....whatever you do next Paul good luck mate from all us Town supporters!!

I agree with you Bluelad7...and let's face it PJ brought in or inherited all of the players who are now doing the business except for Orr. MM and TC have got them organised including playing them in their proper positions. It looks like there has been improvement in the coaching, strategy and tactics too. So well done PJ for nor burning bridges and for continuing to support us. I wish you well.

Agreed with Algarve, top bloke. He wanted to play football the right way, he certainly gets teams moving the ball dynamically. He needs someone on his staff who deals with defence, it's clearly not his nor Hutchings strong point.

PJ got the Keane poisoned chalice. Always felt sorry for him. I think MM is doing a great job but he's inherited a much better situation from PJ than the shambles RK left behind

Yes we always thought you were a good guy PJ and there will always be a place in my heart for you. I just hope you get great success in your next venture. Many things I did not understand but always believed that you cared. COYB

PJ seems like a great bloke and I wish him well for the future. Just didn't click for him when he was here, we saw flashes of hope with him though, the run at the start of last season springs to mind

I think the above shows the measure of the man , and one who I desperately wanted to do well, as I think a lot of fans did, because we had so much time for him.

Unfortunately it just never happened and honestly beleive it was mutual as think he'd had enough.

Time to look to the future though and our turnaround is a credit to the players and MM however no way are we out of the woods yet and we just have to keep doing what MM instills in his team, that by working hard for each other and grinding out results, the performances will come.

Wish pj all the very best in the future though, one of footballs good guys.

Total respect, PJ - hope that you and your family have a peaceful and relaxing Christmas. Speaking as one who has left several jobs under a cloud of bad feelings, you've got it right, my friend. And you'll always be welcome at Portman Road - I'd even buy you a beer!

Paul Jewell - thankyou - you have shown by your honesty and integrity your true soul, a great Guy whom we all really liked but it just didn't work out at ITFC. All Town fans wish you the best of luck and hope to see you back in football very very soon. All the best.

maybe a nice bloke but a shocking Manager the worst in Town history in the 40 years I have watched them

footyblue you preferred Keane!? At least we played some good stuff going forwards at times under Jewell, our football under Keane was the most negative turgid rubbish I have ever seen.

Jewell paid the price for some poor decision making in the transfer market. I think the blame is as much Evans' as it is his, although he wasn't much of a matchday manager either. And there was very little evidence of effective coaching. And he was a soft touch. So yeah, other than all those things, he was, er, "good".

Thanks PJ, and once again thanks for all your hard work. If you had a hand in McCarthy getting the job then standing down and making recommendations that MM should be the new manager then you have perhaps done the best thing that could happen for Town for years, I believe MM is the man to take us forward.
It's a shame that it didn't work out for PJ, I liked him and wish him luck for the future.

I think most managers trying to recruit from outside the area find it difficult to attract new people. Certainly it's true in teaching. Once they are here, they love it, and I think the same is likely for Ipswich Football Club managers trying to recruit talent to the club. How do you solve this problem? Accept that this is a problem and offer them more money.
Good luck to Paul Jewell. Hope he has more luck in the future.

Stop it! He had no idea! He replicated his awful record at Derby with our club. Irrespective of how nice he was he was leading us into oblivion. It's took MM less than a month to Suss what we all knew and what PJ couldn't grasp. Edwards wasn't a full back Hyam was needed in midfield and Murphy is a striker and not a wide player. He also won't tolerate the apathy that was endemic during jewels reign, I wish him well but what is he doing on Sky sports after his last 2 efforts in management?

As others have said, his attitude is worthy of respect- can't see many other managers helping to pick a successor. Also ME showing humility in wanting to learn from mistakes- an attitude which brings credit (and hopefully success!) to the club.

@footyblue - Harsh! I guess you must have been in a coma for John Lyalls reign then as statistically he was a worse manager. Forsyth and millburn in the 60's had shocking win ratios around the 20-30% mark. We'll ignore Goddards and Mogga's short tenures with even worse ratio's. At 34% win ratio for Jewell its hardly the best but Sir Bob was only 10% more and Sir Alf at 47%.

Looks like I have blundered onto a hijacking of TWTD by the PJ Appreciation society. I for one wish he had gone a lot sooner, he couldn't pick a team, couldn't play his players in the right position, couldn't target the right players in the transfer market, couldn't motivate the players he had........the list goes on. Yeah he may be a nice bloke but he was a rubbish manager.

I can't believe I'm reading some of the stuff on here. True, Jewell inherited a difficult situation but that's what we appointed him for. It was hardly as if we'd kept Keane's tenure secret. I think Jewell failed in several areas and, ultimately, left the club in no better shape than when he came. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes when Jewell was here but can you not just sense that there is a whole new atmosphere at Portman Road now? Nice man? I expect he is. But as a manager he was spectacularly ineffective.

MVBlue added 00:03 - Dec 10
At the meal between Evans and Jewell, you'd expect Jewell to point out that player negotiaitions and Cleggs involvement hampered player signings. Jewell clearly has not kept up with modern developments in football since 2007 when he left Wigan either that or was unable to work with lower transfer funds. He's got a lot of friends in the football world/sky sports so he'll be fine.
