Colchester Midfielder Set to Sign
Saturday, 12th Jan 2013 23:33

TWTD understands that Town are set to sign Colchester United midfielder Anthony Wordsworth in a £200,000 deal. In November, we reported that Blues boss Mick McCarthy and assistant Terry Connor had watched the 24-year-old in action for the U’s.

Camden-born Wordsworth came through the Colchester youth system and made his senior debut in August 2007.

Since then the central midfielder or wideman has made 155 starts and 44 substitute appearances, scoring 35 goals.

Last season he scored 13 times but this campaign, as the U’s have struggled near the foot of League One, the set-piece expert has managed only three.

Wordsworth, who has also been linked with Charlton, Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Peterborough recently, is out of contract at the end of the season.

A more creative central midfielder presenting a greater goal threat seemed likely to be on manager Mick McCarthy’s January wish-list even before Nigel Reo-Coker left the club at the end of his short-term contract.

Meanwhile Watford boss Gianfranco Zola has revealed that the Hornets have received interest in winger Mark Yeates with Bristol City and Town believed to be the clubs involved.

The Blues were recently linked with Yeates's Watford team-mate Jonathan Hogg, however, a local source suggested to TWTD that the former Colchester man was instead the subject of Town interest.

Dubliner Yeates, 28, has also played for Tottenham, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Brighton (loan), Swindon (loan), Hull (loan) and Leicester (loan).

I wonder if this impending deal is why NRC leaving seems to have been abit easy for MM he new that a much better prospect was on the near horizon?

Nice showreel, Sindre - some real crackers in there. The boy has a rare left foot and good composure in front of goal. Would be happy about this if it comes off and seems completely in line with MM's recent 'young & hungry' comments. It's nice to be excited about the transfer window for the first time in a few years!

I woke up this morning thinking we needed to do something about our 'goal difference' because, now we are becoming hard to beat, and as we score goals and begin to make an impression on the 'goal difference' column we let it go again (e.g. Brighton) and that, at least, makes us one point worse off. I then thought about what we needed to do and wished we could get in a creative midfielder, somebody like Johnny Wark, who not only created goals but broke into the box and scored them and then I switched on and saw this item! The reel that Sindre has given us looks just the sort of thing I had in mind, so great. I was one of those people who didn't get over excited about MM being appointed although I have always liked and respected him and, ever since the Kean affair when he was the Manager of Ireland, I have always kept an eye on how he was doing but now, saying for the second time in twenty four hours, 'well done MM & TC' - perhaps this is it! When you analize how MM goes about his business its obvious that everything is about the future. Yes, he uses some sticking plasters to patch up but theres no long term contracts to tie the club down and the squad is taking shape for next season. With Taylor to come back we should (for the first time in years) be a force from next August.

Fantastic!
This is the 'transfer rumour' that excited me the most.

Quality player...and there aren't many left-sided central midfielders (who can play the flank) around in football.

So impressed with McCarthy...this isn't the summer transfer window, it's the difficult winter one, when it's damn hard to get the right players in.

This the kind of signing we used to make, and the type which used to pay off big time. Fingers crossed!

Will probably signal the end of Murphy, JET and with the strikers now at the club and Taylor to come back Mr Chopra. Wonder if Drury will be offered a new deal as well.

The future is bright under MM and TC. Maybe a new keeper although Loach is not doing himself any harm but not sure that MM fancies him

If we don't get into the playoffs this season we will definitely go up next. Mick McCarthy is the best thing that could possibly have happened for us and is the best manager in the division. As long as Ireland don't nab him off us I can see ITFC being a top ten premier team for years to come.

This chap sounds good as well.

Sorry Sindre, tried to expand your clip and hit the down button by mistake!!

Good to see that we are giving a promising player from div 1 an opportunity. And am sure Mick and tc won't allow him to be lazy!!

The squad is certainly taking shape with a more youthful and powerful look.

i have seen wordworth loads of times as i watch colchester when town away if i can and have seen him develop since breaking into the first team...GREAT player whoever it was who says he is lazy is an idiot without a clue.a danger from free kicks great corners ,good passer and will add height to the team as well. he has been ready to make the step up for a couple of years now and is a snip if the 200,000 price is right.he is quite lanky looking which gives him a certain langruid style which people may mistake for laziness but he is not and his arrival into the box is brilliantly timed.ive seen him play in the middle , on the left of a 442 and as the attacking left player of a 433,he is so adaptable.well done mick great addition COYB

think that's enough of the cringe worthy McCarthy and TC admiration society. Before we have another blip, it's not the done thing surely

Good stuff, McCarthy has has a good chance to view all the squad now and is obviously lining up replacements to get rid of the dead wood, midfield being a very weak area with no goal contribution. It's all about opinions on here, MHI would be get rid of 'No end product' Martin, Edwards, clearly a good servant to the club but now getting past it, he seems lost in Midfield. Drury will prob needs replacing as well, very average at best. I know little about this chap but maybe a next season replacement for Edwards/Martin?.

I've seen Colchester a few times and, though they are a poor team, Tony Wordsworth has shone like a kernel of sweetcorn in a big lump of poo. Ever since he thrilled me with his corners, I've been saying "I hope he comes to us".

Yeates is a better wide man than Martin. Hopefully, it's bye-bye LM fairly soon. Get the squad ticking over like a Lambo ready for next season's big one!!

Don't know much about this guy. But have full faith in mick and the clubs scouts. Right age and sounds like a typical mick signing.

Get in! great young player - I thought last year he would be a great player for us. He's a play maker can play out wide ideal.
Yates would be a great player too, only 28 brilliant free kick taker and can put a super ball into the box. When he plays against us I always think Oh know not him he is the free kick specialist. Well done Mm & Tc!!

We've moved so fast this transfer window that when we are told on here that a player is set to sign, they are usually paraded holding a Town shirt the next day! Wordsworth does sound a good signing, a young League One player who doesn't cost a fortune and who would be grateful of the chance to show what he can do at Championship level. The antithesis of Reo-coker who was only playing in the Championship on a short term deal so that (he thought) he could get another Premier League club.

Half an hour after ITFC secure a massive point at Cardiff.

Radio Suffolks Brenner Woolley to MM: "Any news on any arrivals - has anything developed in the last couple of days?"

MM: "No…..no, I've been travelling yesterday, in in the hotel… ‘n nothing's happenin' at the moment….."

IMWT !!

No I'm an Ipswich Fan living in Colchester. He was great when trying to break into the side 3 or 4 years ago, and steps up his game for big games, but seems to vanish for the dog fights.
