Cobbold Lower Tier Fans Face Move
Thursday, 17th Jan 2013 18:56

Town are moving supporters in the lower tier of the Cobbold Stand to the upper tier for Saturday’s home game against Barnsley. With heavy snow forecast on Friday and Saturday morning, the club plan to use the lower tier for any which has to be moved from the pitch, which will be under its cover until shortly before kick-off.

Chief executive Simon Clegg told the club site: “We don’t know how much snow we are dealing with but we may have to shift a lot off the pitch and the easiest way to do that is via the Cobbold Stand.

“We need to free up access to stack up the snow in the lower tier of the stand, so all supporters in that area will be issued tickets for the upper tier when they come through the turnstiles on Saturday.

“Our groundstaff are confident the pitch will be fine but the snow — and the quantity of it — is the problem. We have plans in place and will be doing everything possible to get the game on.”

Meanwhile, Saturday’s U18s game away at Bristol City has been postponed due to the weather.

why bother putting the cover on the pitch? Roy Keanes team managed to destroy Leicester 3-1; PJ's team managed to descimate Barnsley... with those two facts added together; imagine what MM's team could do to Barnsley on a snowy pitch!

Given the weather forecasts and thinking of the travelling fans, isn't it better to just postpone the match and rearrange it for another date?

Many supporters have not forgotten the failure of the club to give refunds for the abandoned Middlesbrough match last season, so may be reluctant to buy tickets for Saturday (especially at Band B prices - for Barnsley!!).

Unless the forecast changes dramatically I really cannot see the game going ahead!

@wkj It was actually 3-0, not 3-1!

I desperately hope it does go ahead. Town are in good form and with the new strikers in place this will be their first chance to shine at home.

I seem to recall a similar 'confidence' about the Middlesbrough match. Then the cover was taken off and the frost set in immediately.

For those saying call it off now, what if we get none or hardly any snow. We'd look a bit stupid then wouldn't we. I remember in 92/93 season the club postponed league cup quarter final tie against Sheff Wed 24 or 48 hours in advance due to snow which had all melted by the time the game should have been. Wednesday were in poor form at the time but by the time the rescheduled game took place their form had improved and they beat us and when all the way to Wembley.

Not all season ticket holders live i ipswich.
I travelled from matlock to ipswich for the middlesborough game for what?
£60 worth of fuel wasted
any doubt call it off and save many loyal fans money time hassle and help keep every one safe

I am in the same boat as you Tufty, I travel from Sleaford for each match - £50 of fuel. What I don't want is a 11.30 pitch inspection like we had for the Boro game. I will need to leave before then, especially if the weather is bad. Don't want to be getting to Cambridge on A14 just as the pitch fails an inspection. Both Tufty, myself and the Barnsley fans need a decision by 09.00 am to stop us making a wasted journey.

Too right PSGblue let's get back to a caring club putting fans first

I was considering going to this match but decided against it. The shambolic handling of the Middlesbrough game last February and the failure of the club to look after fans that had paid for tickets will not be forgotten by me any time soon.

It's not as though we are in both cups and facing fixture congestion, it would be easy enough to reschedule the match. The club should take a sensible view based on the weather forecast, which is snow all day tomorrow and much of Saturday with temperatures not rising above freezing.

I could ask the opposite question, what if the game gets called off late when people have travelled, or abandoned during play? There is also the safety of travelling fans to consider.

If the ambient temperature is at zero or below when the covers come off there is no way the match will finish even if it starts. It's about 15 deg under the tent and as soon as the moisture in the grass is exposed to the outside air it will freeze in minutes. Can't see it will be playable myself

It better go ahead as l work abroad and this will
be my sixth game of the season. Expensive season ticket?

Perhaps it's not that easy to simply get a game called off? Perhaps there are sanctions if you as a club postpone rather than on safety advice from police or ref decision on the day? I genuinely don't know, can understand people rather the game didn't go ahead if it happens as the forecast suggests though.

I'm glad the team have improved to the extent that the 'whingers' on here are now complaining about the weather........Love it!

I suspect hollywoodginge has a good and valid point too, whatever happens it will be Cleggys fault lol

Embarrassing that we don't have under-soil heating.

I doubt the game will be cancelled as the ground temperature isn't supposed to dip too low; the ground is still reasonably soft underfoot here i live; I could be wrong but the conditions won't be near as bad as the Home game vs at The Foxes a couple of seasons ago; although we won that (thank god at the time)- that game should never have been played
