McCarthy: Loans More Likely Than Permanent Deals
Thursday, 24th Jan 2013 16:33

Town manager Mick McCarthy says the Blues are more likely to add loan signings to the squad during the remaining week of the transfer window rather than permanent signings.

McCarthy told the club site: “We’d like to get players in before the window closes, permanent ones but we are not having much joy at the moment.

“We’re looking at loans now more than signings and I know I said that I didn’t want to do that but at least if it’s window to window, they stay with us until the end of the season.”

He says clubs usually want to get signings in before they'll let people move on, while free agents aren’t always quite as free as they initially appear: “It’s just frustrating because if you’re signing somebody [the other club] generally wants to make sure they’ve got somebody else.

“It’s always expensive in January to sign them, and then there are players who are ‘free transfers’. They are free transfers, that’s fine, and if you’re taking them on a long deal, a two-and-a-half-year deal, that’s fine.

“But if you want to take them until the end of the season, that sounds like a good deal until you realise that our season finishes on May 4th and we pay them to July 30th.

“So, they get May, June and July wages for being sat on the beach somewhere, which doesn’t really add up.

“It’s never as easy as ‘I’d like to sign him and he’s going to come’ and everything’s great. It’s not that easy.”

Meanwhile, Coventry manager Mark Robins is reported to have said he doesn't want to sign former Blues striker Jason Scotland, but confirmed that discussions had taken place with the 33-year-old, whose Blues contract was settled at the weekend.

I believe there will be a new and strong team made by MICK on coming summer.

More loan signings has got the thumbprint of Clegg all over it - better not to add to the squad than to get in some more half-hearted wasters.

Not a bad thing - loans turning into a permanent deal lined up for the summer is a good way to go.

Not a problem at all with this way of working for MM

So Mings and Nouble, for what £100K, are likely to be the only permanent signings in McCarthy's first six months at the club? I hope Mick gets the proper support of the owner, otherwise he might struggle like Paul Jewell did with such limited budgets in the summer.

It does not matter whose in charge mm pj etc the club have no money so it will always be a loan deal even in the summer it will be loan or free deals it's the only way we will ever add to the squad because we dont have enough people coming thru the turnstiles simple as that good luck mm in finding the quality we so need and desire!

When Phil broke the news on that Sunday morning that Wordsworth was close to signing I got really excited, I just knew it was right. The next day the news of Camp being here was great too and things seemed to be coming together. Now, with this news, I am reminded of what I said when PJ left which was that I thought our problems ran much deeper than needing a new Manager. I am beginning to feel depressed again. This is not the way it should be going.

I like that he has told us what's actually happening at the club at this time , so we ain't guessing what's happening

We've just freed up Scotland's wages which i imagine weren't peanuts so that's probably the wages for a loan signing. I don't think we should be too worried about McCarthy targeting loan players for now, it seems like it's just a case of getting to the summer in this league then re-building properly with permanent signings at the end of the season.

Totally agree Yorksblue, the likes of Jet and Chopra are bringing nothing to the table so we might as well get rid of them if its not too late already

I wish folk would stop moaning! Give the man a chance.

I suppose this makes sense, but i hope Mick is going to get better support from the money man that PJ did in the last summer. I feel he just dithered doing neither backing or sacking PJ. Mr Jewel was poor but this season was given little or no chance of success untill he was a dead man walking.

Loans are the way forward in this window. We aren't going up and we aren't going down so let's sit tight (unless a steal comes up).

Lots of frees available in the summer and this is the right time to spend some money. I am happy with loans now, rather than panic buys. It is all about next season!

In Mick we trust

I think Jet and Chopra bring a lot more to the table than Edwards,Martin,Mcgoldrick,McClean or Nouble try playing them .
Different manager same story wont invest or Campbell would be back here already ,proven striker who could take us forward ,we have not looked a threat since he left

season is over. but it is hard to attract permanent signings when there is a possibility of league one football in all honesty. Looking forward to summer

do half you people not listen, Mick has made it pretty clear as to why we may have to resort back to loans. I am fairly sure that are club can get a strong squad built in summer but these things take time.

........ could be yet another interesting close season come May - Will Mick run with his £million ? , or push on with the re building of the Club i.e securing a few more permanent signings.
Until this happens no one can say anything is at all stabilised, or forging ahead.
Loans / Borrowing long term gets us nothing other than a short term fix.

BillBlue - can certainly, but somewhat reluctantly, see where you are coming from - let's just watch this space for a bit longer !!!!!

I'm glad everybody listened to me about not moaning! Note of caution. We are not safe and we are not clear of relegation. Like most, I think we will be ok but have a look at the fixture list. I think it looks pretty tough and given that this is no bunch of world-beaters, I just hope that everybody gets behind the boys even when things look a bit ropey. I've said it before, MM has done a tremendous job getting this lot clear of the drop zone. Tremendous. We were rubbish. And for the sake of encouraging the players and the management, I really hope all of us don't forget that too quickly. COYB!

bluemay, why dont you read the article properly before commenting. mm clearly stated the reason why we looking at loans rather than signings. that is because its proving difficult due to clubs not being willing to let go of players till they got a replacement. nothing to do with a lack of money. love to know where you get that idea as me has clearly stated that mm will be backed with money to make signings. the majority of those signings were always going to happen in the summer, not now.

It makes sense as people have said before, panic signings in Jan cost way more

"We've just freed up Scotland's wages "

eh ?

We settled his contract ie we pai him up - inless you think he simply tore up his contract and walked away!

Sadlt MM's words support what many will already know. we are still patching up the squad, filling in here and there where the worst holes show. Something I suspect will continue through the summer and the foreseeable future.

Relegated clubs will come down with £16m in parachute money alone, a million more than we have in total - and that's assuming ticket sales increase between now and May and season ticket numbers don't fall anu further. Otherwise it will be an even bigger gap. They will get a further £16m the season after, as will Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves if they don't go up thus season.

And people expect us to challenge when we are, and will be, reliant on cast offs, freebies and loans.

It would be laughable if it were not so tragic
