Stearman Happy to Play Anywhere for Town
Friday, 1st Feb 2013 06:00

Utility defender Richard Stearman is willing to play wherever he is required at Ipswich during his loan stay from Wolves.

He said: “With Bradley [Orr] going it opens up a spot at right-back so probably I’ll be predominantly there, although you’ll have to ask the manager about that.

“I don’t mind playing in either position. Centre-back is probably my first position but I’ve played a lot during my career out on the right-hand side. It’s nothing alien to me and I’ll just get on with the job.”

The former Leicester and England U21 player spoke with Mick McCarthy when he returned to former club Wolves in December for the first time since being sacked in February and guided Ipswich to a much-needed victory.

Stearman added: “Yes, I managed to have a brief chat with him, just to say hello, that day. I worked with him for a good many years, the same with Terry [Connor], and it was good to see a few familiar faces.

“We just had a general chat. He brought in a lot of the Wolves players and created his own team, bringing in lads at a young age and letting them progress together.

“He was a father-figure type and it was obviously a sad day when he did leave the club. I think if you asked most of the players he brought in they would say the same.

“Terry spent a good many years at Wolves and helped me to become the player I am. He’s certainly very influential in the training and coaching side of things, so it’s also good to be linking up with him again.”

Stearman has no idea what the future holds beyond the end of the season, adding: “I’ve still got another season on my contract at Wolves so first and foremost I’m here for the three months to get a bit of game time under my belt. We’ll see how it goes from there and see what happens in the summer.”
