Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Town
Saturday, 9th Feb 2013 17:24

Former Blues striker Jordan Rhodes netted just after the hour to see Town to a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in a scrappy affair at Ewood Park. There was little between the teams in a poor game with the only goal somewhat fortunate, Aaron Cresswell clearing off the line from Grant Hanley and Rhodes stabbing it over the line off Blues keeper Stephen Henderson.

Henderson came in for the injured Scott Loach in goal, the ex-Watford man having suffered a sprained thumb in training on Thursday. Other than that Mick McCarthy, back in the dug-out after his absence through flu last week, stuck with the team which beat Middlesbrough 4-0.

Ex-Blues striker Jordan Rhodes and former loan right-back Bradley Orr were included from the start in an unchanged Blackburn side, while DJ Campbell was on the bench.

The game started scruffily with neither team able to create anything or keep the ball particularly well in the opening 10 minutes.

It wasn’t until the 12th minute when there was any significant penalty area action, Tommy Smith flicking a Morten Gamst Pedersen freekick from deep out for a Rovers corner.

On the quarter hour, the Norwegian hit a 25-yard freekick into the Town wall after Cresswell had been harshly adjudged to have fouled Colin Kazim-Richards.

Marcus Olsson headed over and on to the roof of the net from a tight angle on the right in the 18th minute from his brother Martin Olsson’s deep cross from the left.

Town, in last season’s all black away kit, failed to make any impact going forwards until the 20th minute when a neat interchange of passes involving David McGoldrick, Carlos Edwards and Guirane N’Daw ended with the on-loan Forest man mis-hitting his cross into the arms of Rovers keeper Jake Kean when well-placed. Soon after, N’Daw hit a strike from distance but without testing Kean.

Rovers top scorer Rhodes spent several minutes off the field receiving treatment for a nosebleed and the resultant change of kit and the Blues began began to get the upper hand while the home side were down to 10 men. After Rhodes had returned, Aaron Mclean headed Cresswell’s corner from the left across the face of goal and wide.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy shot wide for Blackburn after a corner had been half-cleared on the half hour mark with the game still to really get going.

Daryl Murphy moved up front alongside McGoldrick for the Blues as a dreary half moved into its final 10 minutes, Mclean switching to the Irishman’s left-sided role. On 38 Luke Hyam screwed a strike wide from 20 yards when he might have done better with Town now on top.

Cresswell hit a cross well beyond his strikers on 43 after Murphy, who had made an impression having been moved forward, had played him into a dangerous area on the left.

Few at Ewood Park will remember much about a far from entertaining half, although Town manager Mick McCarthy will have gone in the happier of the two bosses with the Blues in charge in the closing minutes of the period and with the home side having been kept quiet throughout.

Chances had been rare at both ends with Mclean’s flick from Cresswell’s corner perhaps the nearest either side had got to a goal.

Mclean scraped an early shot wide for the Blues with the second period starting in much the same vein as the first had ended.

Former Blues loanee, and still this season’s top scorer, DJ Campbell came on to make his Rovers debut in the 58th minute, replacing Pedersen.

Before the on-loan QPR man could make a contribution, his new side were in front. Danny Murphy’s corner from the right fell to defender Grant Hanley, whose shot was cleared off the line by Cresswell but the ball fell to Rhodes touched it home off Blues keeper Henderson.

Blackburn had hardly deserved the lead on the balance of the game up to then, but the goal gave them a bit more belief. On 73 Rhodes flicked a header wide from Martin Olsson’s cross.

The Blues had made little headway since going behind and it came as little surprise when McCarthy changed things around, Michael Chopra and Anthony Wordsworth taking over from McGoldrick and Mclean.

There was a scare for Town on 78 when Cresswell gave the ball away and Danny Murphy wafted a cross to the far post but Campbell could only head into Henderson’s arms.

After Kazim-Richards had picked up the game’s first booking, Frank Nouble replaced Edwards, who played a full 90 minutes for Trinidad in the Caribbean on Wednesday, for the final 10 minutes with Town having rarely threatened to get back on terms. If anything Blackburn were looking more likely to add to their lead. On 84 Markus Olsson volleyed wide.

As the Blues began to press for an equaliser, Campbell sent Rhodes away behind Smith but Henderson got across to his right to make an impressive save. Rovers took a short corner, which was sent back into the box for Rhodes, who headed wide.

Town came within a whisker of getting back on terms in the final minute of normal time. Wordsworth headed the ball down and N’Daw hit a left-foot strike from the edge of the area just wide of Kean’s right post . Moments later, Rhodes again went close with a header from a cross from the left when he probably ought to have hit the target.

The Blues had a golden chance to claim a point deep into injury time when Orr slipped allowing Daryl Murphy to cross from the left but Richard Stearman’s header back across goal flew well wide of the post.

There was a hold-up late on when Nouble clashed with keeper Kean as they challenged for an aerial ball and soon after referee Kevin Wright blew his whistle to confirm the Blues’ second away league defeat in a row.

In the end, the home side ought to have won more comfortably, Rhodes having missed a number of chances late on, but prior to their goal there had been little in a dull game with the Blues just shading it.

However, Town threatened all too rarely, not managing a shot on target all afternoon, although Mclean in the first half and Stearman late on will both feel they should have done better with their opportunities. N’Daw was unfortunate with his strike towards the end.

The result sees Town drop to 20th with Bolton, Bristol City, Barnsley and Peterborough all winning and are now only one point from the relegation zone.

Blackburn: Kean, Orr, Dann, Hanley, Martin Olsson, Pedersen (Campbell 58), Lowe, Murphy, Markus Olsson, Kazim-Richards, Rhodes. Subs: Usai, Givet, Fabio Nunes, Nuno Gomes, Morris, Goodwillie.

Town: Henderson, Stearman, Chambers, Smith, Cresswell, Edwards (Nouble 80), N'Daw, Hyam, Murphy, Mclean (Wordsworth 73), McGoldrick (Chopra 73). Subs: Lee-Barrett, Hewitt, Kisnorbo, Drury. Referee: Kevin Wright (Cambridgeshire). Att: 14,342.

Note Jason Scotland , never given a chance under MM. Whats the difference between Aron Mclean and Jason Scotland. Apart from one can score goals and the other cannot. As an aside our inabilty to create chances is our downfall.

hhmmm..disappointing not to get anything from the game, feel like we're struggling to score goals away at the moment.
On another note Peterboro, Bristol City and Barnsley ALL won (not becoming that surprising now) and the bottom is becoming really tight, perm any club from 9 now to get relegated.

Only one point off the drop zone again it would be easy to press the panic button. Lets not forget where we were when Mick Mac and TC took over. If we continue to play with the level of commitment we've shown of late we will be absolutely fine. 3 points vs Bpool next week!!

We will be relegated ,we create less , score less than the other sides fighting for survival. Aron Mclean is our new disaster after ellington. Terrible. Look at the form this year. We have one win.

Our 3 new strikers 2 goals between them , Jason Scotland has scored the winner 3 games on the trot for Barnsley. Hate Saturday nights after a loss

We are back in serious trouble. Agree with other comments about McLean. I don't think he will score enough goals for us. That said neither will murphy. Worrying times ahead thanks to this very poor result.

Think we have a long road ahead of us, at one point barnsley, birmingham, wolves and peterborough were all losing and we looked ok now we're back in a dog fight. Not only agony to see it when Rhodes popped up as the scorer but then Jason Scotland drags up back in the mire for the 3rd week in a row!!

Please can people stop moaning! Every time we fail to win you lot will find something to moan about, just calm down! Blackburn have premier league quality and we came close to taking something. I've got full confidence that Mick & Terry will keep us up! COYB!

I agree that without MM we would be bottom and miles off any chance of survival. But we seriously lack creativity and we desperately need two wingers for the creative edge as Hyam and N'Daw will not change a game with moments of genius.

Wordsworth seems like a different type of midfield player and so if he is given 90 mins the strikers might well be able to feed off his vision.

JDTRACTOR96 , Your wrong , Blackburn are pants with a hopeless manager. We have spent fortunes putting together rubbish, we create nothing have 3 new strikers who cannot score as its all to rare they get chances created. Our midfield does not score either ,people go on about Hyam ,but he is a ball winner not a ball payer ,Ndaw is the same ,so we can have a look at what we have got and what we have signes and azssk the question, do we have a chance of relegation ,answer yes we do..

Just on way back from Blackburn. For those who did not see it, please believe me when I say we were terrible. Complete contrast to last week. No consistency whatsoever. Agree about no creativity. Hopefully Wordsworth will get a start next week. Rovers were poor today as well, as was the Ref but even so we got what we deserved........Nothing!

To stay in the league we need to go with experience was the message in January. Is that he same experience that is benefiting Barnsley.... Yes Great Business in the window! Still let's hope?

The worst 30 games of a season i can remember. Mclean dropped next week. Keep the defence and make changes in all other areas ..

BLUEFEAST, you're the one who is wrong. The Olsson brothers, Pederson, Rhodes & Kazim-Richards are all regulars for their country! And I have no idea how you can say Michael Appleton is a hopeless manager. You need to give Mick & Terry the BOD. Look where we were when they took charge!! Hate the moaning from some of you

Oh dear ! Back in the danger zone again. We now have two MUST WIN home games . Couldn't believe the result from The Riverside today and who scored the winner ?

I said at the time that it beggars belief we should pay up Jason Scotland and let him go....and to a relegation rival at that!!!
Three games, three goals and six additional points. What price he saves Barnsley and sends us down???
At the very least we should have held him until the summer. Always insisted he was the best finisher at the club. Chopper/Murphy/McLean/Taylor....you can keep the lot of them.

Bluefeast - are you alright mate? Stronger anti-depressants maybe?
Didn't see all these dry rants about creativity and striking options when we won 4-nil last week.

Blackpool and Watford create chances so we'll lose. Most stupid statement of the day!

If Nathan Ellington signs for Crewe and scores a few will we all bemoan his transfer!?
Scotland was off loaded as he's not the right age range we want to take the club forward which every Town fan has been whining about season after season so we get younger talent in who scores a goal last week and now that's not good enough!!

Get a grip!

I fancy a 7 point return from the next 3 games...

I salute anyone of our fans who made the journey because the game sounded rotten from what I was hearing, but in a way I wasn't expecting any different, considering Blackburn have been more solid lately and we would look to the front players early. What I would say though is you can always see things on the flip side, the league is unpredictable which means if we can get results in our next 2 home games, things could turn for us and maybe the bottom teams may suffer. I remember commenting that it was the right thing to let Scotland go as it would benefit the player and I thought that was important. I hold my hands up, I was wrong and it's proving a disaster. As a side note, was it impossible to get Connor Wickham on loan? I think I heard Mick say how lucky we were to get £8-£12m for him so perhaps he doesn't rate him, but christ could he be handy right now.
