Martin: I Shouldn't Have Reacted
Wednesday, 6th Mar 2013 13:45

Winger Lee Martin apologised to the rest of the Town squad after being sent off during last night’s 1-0 defeat to his former loan club Nottingham Forest last night. The 26-year-old was one of two Blues players to see red with defender Richard Stearman later dismissed for a second bookable offence having fouled Andy Reid.

Martin was issued his marching orders for a clash with Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury after the former Arsenal man had fouled him and told the club site: “I have to take full responsibility for the way I reacted. It shouldn’t have happened.

“The lad has come in on me and stamped on me while I’m on the floor. I pushed my arm out against him. It wasn’t malicious; it was ‘get off me’, that sort of thing. It was heat of the moment stuff.

“He made the most of it, which is disappointing, but like I said, I shouldn’t have reacted like I did.

“I’m gutted about it and apologised to the lads in the dressing room. I’ve got to sit out three games now when every game is crucial and that’s obviously a sickener.”

Martin felt he should have been awarded a spotkick earlier on in the half: “The first contact was outside but then the play carried on and they brought me down inside the box. It was a penalty.”

The midfielder will miss three games as a consequence of his third Blues red card - Fabian Wilnis, who was sent off four times with Town, is the only other Blues player to have picked up more, while Pablo Couñago, Sito and Alex Bruce have also go three - while Stearman will be banned for one game.

Hopefully, that's his fate sealed.

Why so much hate on Lee?
He gives everything and you still want more...
He's not a natural finisher, but he can pass it around and he covers the whole pitch when we need it.
C'mon guys, lay off the guy. You're clearly no help at lifting team morale...

No hate from me, just frustration. I think Lee Martin brings a lot to the team, but if he can't play because of suspension then what's the point? He should never really be sent off in the position he plays, and yet it happens time and again. When Rooney stupidly gets booked or sent off, you take that aggression because he's a world-class player. Lee Martin is not that. He has got to sort out his discipline. Nobody can argue that he shouldn't have reacted, and that with 11 men on the pitch it would have been a different game. Those points may be crucial by the end of the season, and I think it's fair for Town fans to be frustrated with Lee.

Lee hasn't done anything wrong in my eyes considering this club. He puts in twice the effort in comparison to the other 10 men out there. The last bit of flair the club has. Years of poor signings have put us in this state.

But saying that.. this relegation battle is more entertaining than ANOTHER mid table finish. Peterborough is going to be a big one.

Its all very well to criticise him from the comfort of your armchairs but he was stamped on and in the heat of the moment he lashed out. Who wouldn't have done the same thing in the heat of the moment? Afterall he suffers from the same human frailties as the rest of us and reacted to provocation. The way Lansbury over-egged it was a disgrace but lets not all jump on the anti Lee Martin bandwagon! We should all be pulling together.

Lee Martin is a very average championship player and hopfully we will have 2/3 new signings for wide midfield roles next season. However, he is the best we have at the moment so rather than scapegoat him we need to support him when he comes back into the team

No-one can accuse you of jumping on the anti Lee Martin bandwagon.

You're right we all need to be pulling together but when a player (supposedly a professional) seems not to understand this concept and let's himself, the rest of the team, and all the supporters down, what hope is there?

There is no room for petulance and ill discipline in the modern professional game and while the case you make in Lee's defence may be valid in the street there is no excuse for such behaviour on the football field particularly given our current position.

I didn't see the incident, so i cannot speak with 100% authority, but I'm far more frustrated with the two w******s who, according to reports, rolled around on the floor. This was contrasted on the radio commentary with Hyam's reaction to an incident: he apparently just got up and got on with the job. Good on you lad! You'll win a lot more respect that way in the long run. The result, while important, isn't absolutely everything. If only some of these footballers could see how pathetic their actions appear to the public, especially when caught on TV, some of them at least might be persuaded to reform. I'll back any manager who bans diving and play-acting at ITFC, even at the expense of results.

Does the same treatment apply to Stearman as well then? I notice that no one has criticised him for getting sent off through his act of petulance! His sending off you can argue cost us the game and yet he seems to have been forgotten amongst all this hysteria over what Martin did.

You're absolutely right. In some respects Stearman's actions are arguably more stupid given that we were already down to 10. I for one do not condone or forgive him. It is conceivable that we could have got something out of the game if he had not got himself sent off.

However, whatever the provocation Lee Martin should know by now that you have to bite your lip and walk away from trouble. It's not as if this is the first time something like this has happened to him.

The truth is that Lansbury should have been sent off for stamping on Lee - but he gets off with just a yellow?

Lee was, as he says, simply trying to push him off - wouldn't any of us do the same if we were stamped on in any situation?

Referee totally out of his depth in this game - pandered to the home support time and again. Very disappointed in MM not supporting Lee this time. Hope Lansbury is looking forward to his Oscar ceremony..

I can understand the frustration with Martin. Patience with him is understandably thin given it's not the first time he's been sent off (3rd?) and has had discipline issues since joining the club.

He's also a player we look to (rightly or wrongly) for attacking flair and creativity, which hasn't been delivered.

All of the above, on top of a large transfer fee, and surely decent wages - not a good combination to get the fans on your side. Loathed as I am to see another large fee written off, I wouldn't care if he disappeared from the side for good now, and drifted off to League 1 in the summer on a free.

I was there and Lee 100% deserved to see red; however- so did Lansbury- to be fair if I was in let's possition when I play sports- I'd probably have reacted in the same way- being stamped on hurts! and professional or not- when a human feels pain they defend themselves. I'm not Martin's biggest fan; but to me this is a bad reason to hate him and very hard not to react

Whether you like Martin or not is irrelevant. This is the third time he has been sent off for us and he never seems to learn. Heavily provoked perhaps, but his reaction was unacceptable and he has let the team down.

Now that Grant Leadbitter has taken his undoubted ability elsewhere the moaners had to find another target and that appears to be Lee Martin. He always gives 100% and it is a pity his commitment sometimes boils over. If only JET would show the same 100% effort.

menacinho added 18:19 - Mar 6
jas0999 is spot on. He has got himself suspended just when we are coming to a crucial time. TBH we may not miss him much as there is no end product at the moment, but it's one less option MM has and we are hardly blessed with attacking midfielders at present!

I would give 100% effort if I was playing for Ipswich, it should be a given for a professional footballer as far as I am concerned. Martin has to improve his crossing and shooting; effort is not enough.

why not appeal against martins sending off
then he will be out for 4 weeks not 3 result

LankHenners added 18:34 - Mar 6
M4rkyboy1 - my feelings exactly. Lee is without a doubt a real confidence player and he could really do without supposed "fans" having a go at him all the time. To all those moaners - a true supporter should do what the very name suggests: support! If you feel Lee is playing poorly then don't make his play worse by constantly knocking him. Encouragement is the best cure for a player like Lee Martin.

Perhaps in the summer if Mick signs a classy winger with pace and a decent final ball/finish, then maybe Lee could move into a more central attacking role where I reckon he plays better.

@Cheshire Blue

Shouldn't "Giving 100%" by definition include discipline? Martin got sent off through childish petulance, nothing more. IMO he should work harder at controlling himself.
