Boss Still Wants More From Emmanuel-Thomas
Monday, 18th Mar 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy was delighted with sub Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’s match-winning piece of magic during Saturday’s 1-0 home victory over Bolton, but still wants to see more from the 22-year-old. The ex-Arsenal man tricked his way past Trotters’ defender Sam Ricketts in the 88th minute before sending in a cross which skipper Carlos Edwards buried at the second attempt.

McCarthy says Emmanuel-Thomas’s quality is not in question: “His ability to beat the full-back, he twisted his blood to get that cross in, was fabulous. We all know he can do that.

“We inherited a team with seven points and rock bottom of the league. It’s all that s----y stuff that they have to do.

“That ultimately would have been a 0-0, and but for Jay and but for Carlos we would have had to have taken the point.

“All the lads who broke their balls all afternoon, all throughout however many games there have been since I’ve been here, is what I’m after. And if he can do that, and produce that little bit, [he’ll play].

“Let me tell you, Ryan Giggs runs about and he’s a magician, Beckham did, Ronaldo does, all the top, top players put the hard yards in and do the s----y jobs and if he does that for me, he plays.

“If he doesn’t, he’ll be a sub that comes on and might do a bit of magic. That’s the way it is, I’m sorry my team is going to be that way.”

The Blues boss says he was pleased with the work ethic shown by the Londoner on Saturday, aside from one momentary lapse: “If you want me to be ultra-picky, he let Chung-Yong Lee, the winger, run once and the vein on my neck was popping out because he’d got too far forward.

“I’m being a bit hard on him because I don’t think it’s lack of effort, I think it’s sometimes just seeing it and reading the game and putting yourself in the position.

“He’s trained really well, loads have tried to get him on loan and I’ve told them all to get lost. I haven’t got that many players and I want him to contribute, and he’s done it today and I’m delighted for him.

“And he contributed the last time I put him on as a sub, he blocked it and got us a point. Great.”

I realise that we're in a relegation scrap and that puts a premium on grafters as mistakes could cost us dear in all senses of that term. However, JET is one of the few "flair" players that we have and one who could unlock some defences. I would like to see him being given a chance through the middle, but that will probably have to wait until next season. That Mr McCarthy has refused to let him go out on loan is evidence that he values JET and wants to keep him.

JET just needs to add a modicum of effort for a full 90 mins, to that "bit of flair" he has and we would have a "world beater, not a panel beater".

The choice of where JET finishes up in this game, is entirely up to one person. JET.

Has he got the intelligence or volition to grasp that opportunity?

Jet makes a difference and brings something extra to our play. That matters and it brought us all alive on Saturday.

Equally it was good to see Hyam and Drury playing together again,I wonder what our win % is when these two play together?

Town tore teams apart when the MF combination consisted of Drury...Hyam...Martin!

villageblue/ what a daft comment. edwards needed 2 attempts to score purely because a defender managed to block his 1st attempt. besides, as others have said, what does it matter how many attempts it took him. fact is. he scored, end of story.theobald. agree with your post other than the fact of talor being back. with his committal case not being till may which will prob mean the crown court case not be until at earliest june/july, presuming he found guilty hes likely to be inside at start of next season. still, lets hope this isnt the case.

MM speaks so much sense IMO.

Right now we need grafters more than flare players. Staying up in this league is our only aim. Glimpses of magic from Jet are welcomed from the subs bench but IMO Jet isn't a player that should be starting in our side when we're in a relegation scrap. As MM says he needs to prove to all of us that he can track back and do the donkey work as well as the exciting stuff when we're in this position in the league!

Don't get me wrong I celebrated that goal and Jet's exciting footwork and trickery with real passion but for me right now I want to see grafters in the team.

MM has stated his football priority here, seeing his teams 'put the yards in' (but we, including ME, knew that when he came), however his Championship sides at Wolves and Sunderland had two other things as well- some skilled players and success. If we end up in Prem eventually MM's team's approach will be different to George B's or Sir Bobby's (or Sir Alf's from what i've read of it) but if it establishes us there I'm sure we'll gladly accept it! In my opinion, better to be more 'Stoke-ish ( I did say 'ish'!) than a better footballing side like Blackpool-look where they are 3 years after going up.

Without his block last week and the assist this week we could be 3 points worse off and in even more in danger. At 22 he could be an important player for Ipswich in the future.
