McCarthy Admits Scotland Exit Error
Tuesday, 19th Mar 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy has admitted he may have made a mistake in letting former striker Jason Scotland move on in January. The Blues settled the remaining months of the 34-year-old’s contract with the Trinidadian subsequently joining Barnsley for whom he has scored five goals in two starts and nine substitute appearances.

Asked whether he regretted letting Scotland leave, McCarthy admitted he rues allowing him to join one of the other clubs in the relegation battle: “I regret letting him go to Barnsley.”

Joking, he added: “I just thought I’d let him go to my hometown team and score some goals and see if we can get them out of the bottom three and we’d both stay up!”

He says Scotland’s form since he moved to Oakwell does suggest he made an error: “It looks like a mistake, doesn’t it? Because he’s scored five goals.

“Did he look like he was going to do it here? I don’t know. You move, you get a new lease of life. Good luck to him, good luck to them.

“It wasn’t evident to me or anyone else here, but fair play to him. There was no animosity when he went, none whatsoever.

“He goes and scores and it looks like a mistake, it looks like a daft move, but I can’t do anything about it, it’s happened. I’m not going to beat myself up over it. Good luck to him.”

Scotland’s short-term Tykes contract is up in the summer and his form is already attracting other clubs. We understand Doncaster Rovers could renew their interest in the close season, while Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are both monitoring his situation.

“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.”
John C. Maxwell

Don't think Mick should be too hard on himself. The team is not really set up to score many goals so losing Scotland is not a major issue. It could have been managed better however because the replacements,( who have potential) are not exactly pulling up trees.

MM made a note in his diary on the way to the Press Room. Simply says: "Bugger."

If that's the only mistake then who cares. In Mick we trust.

MM has done a decent job but like Keane and PJ he ships out a load of average players and replaces them with average players maybe slightly younger.
Scotland is as good as what we've got but none of them really trouble defenders like DJ Campbell

I think we have to give Mick a bit of lee way on this ONE "mistake" sine he's been here dont we! Plus Scotland is hardly one for the future ....

I am sure ITFC supporters will let him off if we stay up. BUT IF WE GO DOWN - no doubt there will be endless ranting about his mistakes:

Letting DJ Go
Signing Mclean and letting Scotland go
Persisting with Drury
Not playing JET
Not signing a permanent keeper

Etc etc etc

Just a shame we seem to be more noisy on the message boards when it is going wrong, rather than creating some noise supporting the team at Portman Road, which is like a library at the moment.

Lets get real. We were 6 points adrift before MM joined. It seems some on here aren't happy that he's gonna save us from relegation but want us to do it playing like Barcelona with a squad he's largely inherited. The man is a pragmatist. He sees thE main goal rather than the incidentals. Get behind him and look forward to better things next season.

NSL - Letting DJ go? It wasn't Mick's decision it was the damn Accountants! If you are going to have a go at Mick at least get your facts straight!

It is hilarious how people keep harping on about Rhodes, Scotland etc. As I have said time and time again it dont matter if have Messi, Ronaldo or Pele up front they wouldnt score for us because there is no supply to them. I feel sorry for any striker in our side as is a thankless task. The reason McGoldrick comes off early is that he has neck ache from looking up in sky for the ball. And trust me he is a good player is McGoldrick

Like the honesty MM has shown in this.
At 34, Scotland wan't one for the future.
He's a good striker, but has (maybe) one season left in him.
If we survive, people won't care about this.
Would be great to see Blackburn go down......

Should have let chopra go Scotland scores goals really nice guy and is far less bother than chopra past his sell by date still MM thinks he's a good player ????????

Hindsights a great thing, especially in football.

If we had kept Scotland would we be safe? I'm not so sure.

I liked him, he always looked like he had a goal in him especially when he came off the bench. However sometimes a move can transform a striker, like I think it has for Scotland. On the other hand a move can turn a striker into someone who looks like their playing on one leg aka Torres.

Theres nothing MM or us can do about it now, in my opinion MM has done a magnificent job and he gives me immense confidence we will stay up, and we will guys, will be tight, but we'll be ok.

Couldn't agree more warktheline, will Scotland keep it up? Not so sure especially as wrong side of 30.

..... very much a MM person - but still cannot see any remote logic / benefit to ITFC in letting Scotland go to a relegation rival like Barnsley.

Probably was 'a little bit of helping an old Club out' in this - just hope it doesn't backfire BIG TIME - otherwise a huge 'shot in the foot' for MM.

5 Goals already from Scotland, and all in opposition, and very much against us in terms of points gained by them.
This is the point that some people appear blind, or totally oblivious too - let's hope we can still be as smug and dismissive at the END OF THE SEASON !!!.

Much still to be done - MAKE NO MISTAKE.

Talking about DJ he has hardly set Blackburn alight in his time there ?????
So what happens now Appleton has gone ????

..... Scotland ? - short term / rest of this season - a far greater potential asset to the Club than can be said of McLean.

I think Town fans have the right to 'harp on' about Rhodes until the end of time, such was the obvious nature of the stupidity of the move.
.
Scotland was rather tubby and failing, it was still a mistake to let him go but its hardly in Rhodes league.

The only reason Jason Scotland is scoring goals at Barnsley is he is getting the service that he wasn't getting here when he played. Also he has a contract to win. We just do not play the game that suits his style, always thought he gave us more options when coming on as a sub, I have said it before any of our stikers will score goals if they get the right service. There are not enough crosses coming in to danger areas, not enough balls to feet, but mostly our inability to move and create space and put pressure on to defenders. Throw in's are a classic example, lack of movement off the ball causes problems for ourselves, however that's work in progress, when we get injured players back hopefully it will improve. The defence now looks like it's got it's house in order and we can build from there.
I was much impressed with Jay Tabb on Saturday, not the biggest of players, but he fought for the ball and produced some good balls into the box to the far post, once he is fit will do a good job.
How the club addresses the problems with our two players appearing in court and what punishment is metered out to them will make interesting reading!
Not seeming to be missing Martin too much up to now.
Great result on Saturday against an inform Bolton team. A clean sheet and we shut them down. Hope we can carry that on against Leeds.

MM is not saying he made a mistake. He just says you could look at it that way with the benefit of hindsight but for him it was the right thing to do at that time and I don 't think he would make a different decision given the same circumstances again.

smitherenes123 did i read correctly that you suggest chopra is past his sell by date.
He is of an age where he should be in his prime and has largely done well when fit and playing.
He is a serious goal threat and the key is to get him a run of games and he will score his share for sure.If he went could you really see him going to a team below us.
He would be signied by a team above us and end up scoring at hatfull.
Keep him here mick will get the best out of and already has improved under mick.
He is better to have than scotland altough i wish Jason well and hope he gets a deal with barnsley

DJ is so good why have Blackburn sent him back after no goals in 9 appearances.

He did well for us and thank you as I feel we would have been in trouble now without his goals.

Looking at what has passed I just wonder if he would still score goals at that rate once he had got the deal he wanted, he soon jumped ship from Hull

Sounds like MM is taking the hit for either SC or MM decisions based on short term finance objectives

I think whoever we'd sent to Barnsley would have scored goals, they play a more attacking game than us.
