Drury's Future Undecided
Friday, 29th Mar 2013 06:03

Town midfielder Andy Drury believes he has established himself as a Championship footballer but still isn’t sure where he will be spending the next phase of his career.

Like several of his Ipswich colleagues, the former Luton player will be out of contract in the summer and has yet to enter discussions about a new deal at Portman Road.

But Drury, 29, is quite happy to let his football do the talking for the time being and resolve his immediate future once the current campaign has ended.

He said: “At the moment I don’t have a clue what is happening. I think it’s just a matter of waiting to see when we’re safe.

“I haven’t spoken to other clubs and I’m not aware of my agent speaking to anyone either. I just think it’s a case of getting these games out of the way, making sure we’re safe for next season and finishing in mid-table. It can be sorted out then.”

Drury has clocked up 62 games, scoring twice, since former manager Paul Jewell paid the non-league Hatters £150,000 for Drury in January 2011.

The player added: “I’ve been used to signing one-year contracts so it doesn’t really bother me. I just get on with it and all I want to do is play football.

“I’m not very happy when I’m not in the team. When I wasn’t in last year I preferred to go out on loan. As long as I’m match fit I think I’m a good Championship player.

“I have plenty of confidence in my ability to play at this level for a few years. I don’t want to drop down any more than the next player. I’ll see what happens in the summer, whether I’m still here or somewhere else.”

Drury agrees that there is room for improvement regarding his contribution in terms of goals, having failed to find the net this season in 28 outings — 19 starts and a further nine as a substitute.

Coincidentally, one of his two goals for Town was against tomorrow’s opponents Leeds in a 3-1 defeat at Elland Road in January last year.

He admitted: “I need to score more goals and hopefully it’s something I will do between now and the end of the season, as long as I’m in the team obviously.”

Seems to run around a lot but rarely gets a goal. One of the only creative players we have right now.
Needs to start banging in a few thunderbolts before the end of the season to stay with us....

drury is a few things but creative is not one of them! and running around is one thing but when was the last time you remember him cutting out a ball or making a last ditch tackle... hes never in the right place. i would be hugely surprised if he got another contract

Hope we keep Duke box he's an established player and useful squad player as back up. Play him as number 7 and he would be happier. That's his lucky number when he played for Lewes near Brighton .

I like Drury - good attitude, tries his best, looks for the pass. There have been many inferior players in his position this season and last (Reo Coker!) and I have felt for him at times as whereas so many of our players seem to have had a poor attitude this lad has not.

However, what we need is a better version of him with the same attitude but more pace and guile if we are to push on next season. Good squad player but if I were him I'd be looking for a top half 1st division team (which may of course be us!).

Drury has been a good servant to the club and although has been questioned often I believe he's made a great start to life in the upper leagues... is there more to Drury or is he at his peak? Hopefully he will be a blue next season so we can find out

He'd be more suited to a team like MK Dons, good side playing in the right level for him.

I like Drury. The only midfielder we have that actually tries to go forward and when he is in the team he is usually the driving force these days.

He's not the best player, we know that. He's quite slow and makes mistakes, but for me makes up for it with effort and his, admittedly inconsistent, quality on the ball.

We need better if we really want to go anywhere next season, but I'd like to see him given another year. Useful player.

£150k well spent in my book.

I do think he could enjoy his football a lot more however, like the above comment says, playing in league one with a team like MK. He could really make that league his own, unfortunately he won't do that in the Championship.

Give him another contract, he's done well under Mick - even as a backup to Hyam and N'Daw.

re the mk dons comments i really dont think there is much differance in quality between the top half of L1 and the bottom half of the championship in terms of quality.
Drury is good enough as is our squad what we need is to make minimal changes over the next few years and let players develop better relationships get used to playing together and it will come good.if we sign stearman and mcgoldrick i would be content with that as well as giving drury andmartin new contracts.what we dont need is loads of new signings in the summer

If Town are gonna go from being a bottom six side to a top six side then we will need better players than Drury TBH, but with FFP rules coming in we may not be able to afford much better than him!

He used to be good, now he struggles with the lack of talent we have out wide and upfront.

Drury is just a decent squad player who gives his all but in my opinion is not quite good enough. I believe there is a big difference between the bottom half of the championship and the top half of Div One so on that basis Drury will be comfortable on that stage. I myself don't think he will be here next season but if he is then fair play as MM knows what he is doing.

Agree with theobald1985 - we need to forge an effective and tightly-knit squad, rather than constantly trying (and failing) to pick up individual "star players". The whole being greater than the sum of its parts. That will be far better for our long-term future, especially in the coming days of FFP.

I think it would be silly to let him go. He's no Lionel Messi but he's a very useful squad player with a good attitude and i think you need a few players like that to do the nitty gritty jobs.

i think for 150k done very well when asked to play. last game bolton wasnt overly impressed seemed to go sideways n backward. creativity was missing but i got the impession he wasnt overly happy i think he was asked not to venture to far hold like ndaw and thats not durys game.i hope he gets another chance tomorrow or at least bench not thrown out of the 18 but i reckon mac will go for wordswoth on the bench at least

He deserve another contract, just look at our record when he starts, play off form

Yet another player who gives 110%, but who, sadly lacks any real quality. For me, there are better options and I'd let him go in the Summer.

A lot of the comments regards his ability are true but as Earl60 says we often seem to do better with him in the team then without him.

Agree with Earl60 we seem to do better with the Drury/ Hyam combination but be interested to see the stats. Hope he can prove it in the next few games and win a new contract.

6 months ago, this thread could easily have been about Jason Scotland.

I like the guy. I'm glad he has the self-confidence to believe he is a good championship player. Although I would hardly expect him to turn around and say "Actually I'm not good enough for this team". Which sadly, like we've been saying, is the truth.

I'd class him as a solid League One player. He works hard and gives 100%, but does lack quality. To make a (rather poor) comparison, he's like your first car. You like it a lot and it does a solid job, but you know that someday you're going to need something better. But you still hope for a good home for your old one. Which is why I would let Drury go in the summer, but really hope he can find a team that he will be a star for after us.

I also like Drury. He gives 100% every game and is a good squad player. Came at a knock down price and brings more to the team than the expensive Martin.

Good player,i like him, regards the people who say he has no ability prehaps they should go to a game once in a while.i agree with earlier post i feel he is told to stay back and not get caught upfield which is not really his game he is a good all rounder c/m not a d/m like luke hyam.also if we had bought him for 2mill people would probaby think he was ok but because we got him from non league people think he lacks ability .my opinion is he pisses all over leadbitter and for the people who have never seen him play ,listen to the radio commentry after all mick mills rates him too.anyone agree?
