McCarthy Delighted to Have a Bit of Good Fortune
Saturday, 30th Mar 2013 18:30

Manager Mick McCarthy was delighted with his side’s 3-0 home victory over Leeds but admitted that the visitors were the better side until Tom Lees’s red card just after the half hour.

McCarthy said: “I’m pleased because it’s the first time I can remember that we’ve actually got away with an ordinary performance because it was by us. Certainly for 30 minutes Leeds were better than us.

“But I remember going to Leeds and playing well and coming away having been beaten. And I remember going to Bristol City and playing really well and being beaten, and I remember going to Nottingham Forest and having two sent off and we should have had something.

“It’s our turn today, we had a bit of good fortune. The red card changed the game, I don’t think there can be any argument about the red card, it was a sending off in my view. It changed the game and we were the beneficiaries of a decision.”

The Blues boss was pleased with his side’s workrate: “When you’re under the cosh, and we were, I guess there would have been a time, even since I’ve been here, when we would have capitulated, we did it a couple of times.

“But it doesn’t happen now. We stuck at it, made saves, made blocks. All right, they may have been misses by them, but nevertheless we stuck at it and kept a clean sheet until we got the opportunity to score.”

Leeds boss Neil Warnock felt his team should have won comfortably but had no complaints about the sending off: “It’s difficult doing a press conference when you think you should have won 4-0 or 5-0 and you’ve been beaten by three. It’s a strange situation you find yourself in.

“But what can you say? We’ve got one lad who has let everybody down, let me down, the team, all the travelling we’ve had, all the fans that have come down. One stupid moment.

“I don’t know what else you can say really, it was just ridiculous. We were dominating the game, I’ve never been to Ipswich and dominated a game as much in my life.

“Even with 10 men we’ve never had so many chances down here. We had 15 clear chances. Two of the best ones cleared off the line by Michael Brown and Luke Varney. If I was Mick I’d fill in a lottery ticket tonight.”

Warnock yes you had been better but seriously you were not THAT good! Good result and for once we scored our chances and the opposition didn't, the winning team scores most goals, simples!

Good assessment as always from MM. Was worried until the sending off as in all fairness they were the better team. BUT that's football. We have played better and lost and had bad decisions go against us. On this occasion the red was deserved and we took advantage. You can't ask for anymore. I still don't think half of these players will be with us next season ... but MM has brought an excellent work ethic and everyone gives 110%. Well done to all concerned. Shame other results went against us!

BTW - was MM in a hurry tonight? No interview with BBC Radio Suffolk - and for him, only a few words after the game to the written press?

Today was a bit of a let off really. They had a few cleared off the line, a fabulous block from Morison's shot by Varney, plus a few decent saves by Loach. Leeds controlled the game until the red card, and pressured us for periods after it. However, if you don't score then you can't win, and we punished them. It's still probably our worst performance in a while though, and we need to be better against Millwall, which will be another hard game.

A couple of points though. One is Luke Hyam, my man of the match: a terrific display going forwards, but for once he got rather overrun defensively, which was in part due to Leed's tactics, and was probably one of the reasons we looked shaky. He desperately needed Drury to help him out, which he didn't really. Combined with Drury's lack of ability (if not ambition) going forward, and I think I saw enough to say that he doesn't warrant a new contract.

2nd point: Scott Loach. Made the saves he needed to, but often he parried when he could have caught, and was guilty of pushing the ball back into dangerous areas. He also didn't command his area, preferring to stay back on his line, whereas Henderson would have come and caught. More generally, the defence looked a little less organised. Again, this contributed to Leed's spells of pressure. Loach needs to improve on today's display, though it's early days, and Henderson looked equally nervy when he first came into the side. Time will tell.

Still, the 3 points are the most important thing. Onward to the New Den. COYB.

Yeah we got a bit lucky today but we've had the certain games go against us namely the Forest game, sounds a bit strange how they dominated us so much up to the sending off but occasionally this happens if they play in a different formation which our midfielders can't cope with.
Seen a Palace, Leicester and Hull this weekend and none of them look that good, maybe Hull the best purely as they seem the most organised and play as mentioned on the break away from home. Hypothetically if we made it in to the play-offs you wouldn't fear any of those as we are a good defensive unit but our problem would come through not being creative enough to win against them so in that respect I like what Mick is doing at present and that's getting us organised defensively and making us hard to beat so a chink of light for next season perhaps.

The ginger linesman was so poor today, he clearly doesn't know the rules. We had a couple of clear onside runs and he flags. But I agree with most, if it wasn't for the red card I don't think the scoreline would be as it is now. In order to win games Warnock, you do need to score so having 20 odd shots at goal and scoring none is your own problem. We took ours, and JET has been looking great when he's came on. Happy with the win, and also the budgies losing.

A lot of positives today. I thought the lads really dug in and showed good spirit against a very physical Leeds.
Warnock was fair with his comments. Not sure why he is likely to leave at the end of the season though, along with our Mick he is one of the best managers in the Championship.
Difficult to choose man of match as they all played a part in a very satisfying win.

Was really worried before today and up until the sending off I was justified in my concerns as Leeds were well in control but we rode our luck and have gained three more precious points. Think Warnock is a bit over the top with his comments and the 5-0 scoreline and didn't mention the terrible spoiling tactics he employs. Browns' behaviour in the box was despicable but as usual the Referee who I thought was out of his depth bottled it. Thankfully he got the sending off right and so did we after that. Yes we did get the breaks today but it is not always easy to beat 10 men as Forest will testify and we did the job well. Love the team spirit as shown when we score and McGoldrick looks a class act just hope that deal is really done as do not want to lose him. Disappointed with the other results in this incredible division and it now looks as though we will need 5 more points. Hoping for at least one at Millwall which will not be easy.

I see "DIRTY LEEDS," tag still applies to them then.

I sometimes wonder why they dont just sign up to the local rugby league the number of "elbows" and body checks they pulled out there today.

3-0 "lucky win"? ..... Could give a flying $%^&.

Its 3pts to the Tractor Boys. COYB's

Were you at the game? Not sure how Loach can do better ended with a clean sheet and cleared 3 off the line in the second half alone!!! Some people always want to moan.

...I understand your view and it is churlish to criticise him on the back of those saves today. But I think some Town fans ( me included ) see his inability to claim crosses and CATCH the ball instead of continually punching it ( therefore keeping pressure on the back four), is a major weakness in his game. If he could only sort that out he'd be a hell of a GK and would probably prevent MM from looking in the summer for another GK

The most telling comment in Mick's remarks is “When you're under the cosh, and we were, I guess there would have been a time, even since I've been here, when we would have capitulated, we did it a couple of times.

“But it doesn't happen now...."

Up until the sending off, I wondered whether we would could gut it out and nick a goal on the break, "We're certainly capable of it" I thought to myself which I could never have said about the team a year or so ago. In the event Lees's moment of madness gave us our chance and it was great to see us take it so clinically.

Agree with the comments on Loach today. Some excellent saves but why parry when you can catch. The defence also looked a little shaky at times and I think, in part it's because of loach. He's still quite young for a keeper but he's got to start commanding that area, being a personality and a presence. He did alright but lots of room for improvement.

On another note, i can't remember the last time I heard a manager vilify a player like that! Warnock must be seething!!

Can't believe everyone else below us won again!!

We say everyone else won, Bristol City lost yesterday, Barnsley and Huddersfield today. With Bkackburn and Blackpool drawing yesterday thats 2 points those two lost. would take two draws at Millwall & Derby. COYB from a nervous Ipswich Stokie

..yes you are right...."Bristol City lost yesterday, Barnsley and Huddersfield today. With Blackburn and Blackpool drawing yesterday that's 2 points those two lost.

..So why the hell are we still only 4pts off relegation?? Im struggling to see why we havent put more of a gap between us and the bottom three. Very frustrating tbh
