McCarthy Has Planned for McGoldrick's Absence
Tuesday, 9th Apr 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says he has planned for striker David McGoldrick’s absence from the final five games of the season. The on-loan Nottingham Forest man’s 93-day loan was up after Saturday’s win at Derby but, under the terms of the agreement made between the clubs in January, will remain training with the Blues, who will continue to pay his wages for the rest of the season.

McCarthy said: “I knew, it’s no surprise, it might be to you and everybody else, but it wasn’t to me so I planned for it.”

Aside from McGoldrick, the Town manager has Michael Chopra, Frank Nouble, Daryl Murphy, Aaron Mclean and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas amongst his attacking options.

The Blues boss says that given the restrictions put on McGoldrick's loan - 93 days was the longest he could sign for after his window to window spell with Coventry earlier in the season - he weighed up whether the 25-year-old should be unavailable now or earlier in his time with Town.

He says the situation didn't affect his decision on whether he ought to make the signing: “I thought we might as well take him because you know what happens if you don’t take him, someone else comes in and takes him.

“It was either missing five games at the start of the loan or five at the end and I thought that that’s bonkers, we might as well take him, because if we don’t take him somebody else will come in and take him.

“We’ve an agreement to keep him. Forest didn’t want him, they were releasing him at the end of his contract and we’ve got an agreement to keep him, he loves it here and I fully expect him to stay.”

McCarthy was evidently happy to have kept the details of the deal from the media, presumably to ward off other interested parties: “It’s not always wise to tell you guys everything.

"I know you want to know everything and generally you find out most things. Wasn’t it lovely that nobody found out?

“It’s like telling you the team. I’m not going to tell the team ever, unless I decide one day we’ve played the same team three or four games and that that’s it, so come and beat us. I’m just not going to do it. You find out 99% of the stuff, I reckon.”

McCarthy reiterated that McGoldrick is set to sign a two-year deal on July 1st — unless Town are relegated — when his contract at Forest is up: “That’s the plan.”

Looks like Chopra and Murphy then, with Nouble and McLean as the fresh legs. Not bad at all. Or Nouble on his own with Martin just behind.

Ok, so the club didn't lie when they signed him. They said he was going to stay to May, and he is!

All the team need to do is stay up, to ensure his future at ITFC.

So let me get this right, we've got a player who is not ours, he can't play for us, he will be free to go to anyone who he wants to & WE are paying he wages. This is football gone mad!!!

McGoldrick is most likely going to be ours come 13/14 if we survive so I don't think there is too much to be worried about in the way I him staying with us this season

"Wasn't it lovely that nobody found out?"

I don't think it was the greatest PR from the club to give fans the impression we had been lied to though. It's not just the media, the official ITFC annoucements gave the impression he was here on loan until the end of the season, implying he could play. In future we'll have to get a solicitor look over the wording of their press releases! :-)

I'm not sure whether I'm happy we kept it secret so we have less chance of others coming in and poaching, or I'm annoyed the club lied to it's fans. At least we have an explanation now. I guess if he signs it may have been a good move, if not it will be embarrassing that we're paying his wages with him not allowed to play.

@Sir Bob: That seems to be the long & short of it alright, however, seeing how good McGoldrick has been for us & assuming the very likely prospect of him signing (which he has already said he would publically) will come to pass, it seems a very shrewd piece of business by Mick McCarthy. His goalscoring for Coventry had certaintly gotten him noticed, so 'apparently' signing him on loan until the end of his Forest contract, with the new deal agreed, would have caused potential rival suitors to look elsewhere.
Now all we have to do is stay up & we will start next season (99%) with a very good all round striker at a very good age. The only change I'd like to see is the contract on offer being extented to a 3 year one.

Murphy is the worst we have got, he's awful

Thank goodness you are not our manager Jack.

I think some of you are missing the point regarding McGoldrick. Mick McCarthy has done some good transfer business by keeping everything quiet - something you criticised previous regimes for not doing and so missing potential purchases - so I have no problem with it being told about the 93 days. He is happy to be here although unable to play so that can only be good news

Nouble gets the nod for me but who to partner him with ? Perhaps use the last few games to get a better look at McLean before deciding on whether to sign him ? or showcase Chopra for the remainder of the season and see if a relegation survivor might be tempted in to taking him off our hands ?

Nice to now have an explanation of what was actually going on! Was wondering if there'd been a real cock-up somewhere along the line.

As to paying McGoldrick's wages without the use of the player or a concrete certainty that he will sign, think of it as an investment and probably cheaper than paying a transfer fee.

How dare people say Murphy is a poor striker! Has anyone seen Nouble or McLean? They can't hit a barn door between them! Clueless fans.

Like I've said previously, last year I slated Murphy quite a lot but this year I think it's unfair to criticise him as he's been very much a target man and make shift winger rather than a goal scorer.

From what I've seen, Nouble looks like he's settling in nicely now and bound to get goals eventually. I'd like to see Chopra leave in the summer as he's no where near as prolific as people make out and his wages would be better spent elsewhere.

would have seen this as a problem had we not got the 3 points at derby, albeit we still need another win and some draws, at least it will give the boss the opportunity to see how the fringe strikers play in full matches rather than 20 minute camio's.

Its times like this when I realise that we need a new striker. Strabasnokovski is a great young Polish talent reckon we should try to get him over the summer. He's only 20, but he is quick and has a great shot on him, really do think Mick should look at him!!!

Oh, and there is Paul Taylor - he cant still be injured - maybe his blotted his copy book and wont play again until he's sorted himself out - just because Saturday afternoon's alright for playing doesnt mean that 'Saturday night's alright for fighting'

Ippy4awindup.... I thought you were outed from the closet yesterday? This Polish kid was only 16 the last time you posted his name. Today he is 20? Is his name an innuendo? Or perhaps something subliminal that you can chuckle at when somebody questions your post?
Must have annoyed you when no one bit back at your Martin O'Neil suggestion as a summer replacement for Mick. Was he not once a Norwich City manager? Just own up and show your true colours.

Brilliant coup on the part of McCarthy and co. Smoke and mirrors are an essential part of any campaign. We won the war on misinformation - without it we wouldn't have managed the Normandy landings and now we'd be speaking German.

At the end of the day, we are only fans, not Government ministers, and cannot expect to be informed about everything, though with social media it's harder and harder to keep things up the jumper these days. Careless talk costs lives - or points at least.

Hi BigAlwasmyhero, If you look back at my last comment, then you will see that they are, in fact two different players! I did believe that we could get a 16 year old but now feel that we need someone that can mature more quickly. I did four years of scouting work in Poland and this player was 18 when I left, he has gone from strength to strength and I feel that he genuinely could be a great player for Ipswich. I will own up and confess that I am and always have been an Ipswich fan!
