McCarthy Expecting Cresswell Interest
Thursday, 18th Apr 2013 16:23

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’ll be surprised if there isn’t interest in ever-present left-back Aaron Cresswell over the summer. The 23-year-old, who has played every minute of the Blues’ season so far, lashed home Town’s goal of the season during Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Portman Road.

McCarthy says he saw something new in the former Tranmere defender during that game: “I learnt he can do that as well, he’s had enough attempts! The lads have been teasing him, saying it was a crossfield pass or a cross.

“He’s been excellent, he’s a really talented full-back. I believe there was interest in him last year and I’m not trying to sell my players, but I’ll be surprised if there isn’t interest in him this year because, since November, and I can only judge him on that, he’s been excellent. Outstanding."

Last summer Aston Villa made an enquiry regarding Cresswell's availability but didn't take their interest any further.

McCarthy says he expects him to play in the top flight at some point in the future: “He’s a Premier League footballer in the making, Cressy.

"He’s got good pace, he’s got a good left foot, he’s proven he can defend, he can head it, he’s not the biggest but he’s a good competitor.”

McCarthy says he was watching Cresswell, who cost the Blues a tribunal set £240,000 rising to £520,000 in the summer of 2011, when he was at his previous club: “We looked at him with Wolves, our scouting system had looked. He’s been everything I would have hoped for and he’ll be attracting attention because he’s a good player.”

The Blues boss says it will be quite an accomplishment if the Liverpudlian, who is contracted to Town until 2015, does play every minute of the entire season: “It would be quite an achievement, I didn’t realise that. It would be fabulous for him.”

I'd be surprised if Tommy isn't head hunted either- fair play to them; they've worked hard this year

This is something I've feared for a couple of months, namely Premiership clubs looking at Cresswell and Smith. The improvement in our defence will have been noted and it could be hard to keep them if big offers come in.

Though he had many faults such as poor motivation in the dressing room and on the pitch, Paul Jewell certainly knew how find a good player. Cresswell was an absolute steal, and an example of a few good players found by PJ.

We don't want to sell but if we get no choice then £10m for the two is a starting point!

If I was playing Football manager I would value Cresswell at £6m and smith at £7m - I think Cresswell is marginally a better player however; Smith is a captain in the making who can anchor a team down and that's a massive quality in the defence. Mind you; with FFP coming in; who knows what people will be willing to pay.

I spent a large part of the season thinking Cresswell was over-rated, but he has been part of the excellent defence recently and it was a cracking goal midweek. While there is room for improvement in his game, I am very glad to have him at the club.

As for a player's worth, if a Premier League team or recently relegated team want him he could easily be worth multi-millions due to the crazy money up there. £50M parachute money from next season. Madness.

Completely agree. Until MM arrived at the club, I thought Cresswell had under achieved - and was in fact poor. Then again, so was everyone under Jewell's management. MM has worked well with him and the entire back 5. Think it's essential we sign Stearman and keep the current defenders playing together. 9 clean sheets in 12. Brilliant.

He will get interest and I am sure his midweek Hammer will only increase interest in him.

Best Town player be gutted to lose him

Shows how good he really is. Lets hope they don't want to snatch Tommy either

A talented player who has been relatively consistent despite his youngish age and the fact each of his partners in defence, for a time, changed game on game.

I just don't buy the idea made earlier that Jewell could 'spot a player' though. He truly couldn't (Bullard, Bowyer, Chopra, Ellington, Ingimarrsson, Stevenson, Sonko, Korouma, Reo-Coker...) and that is without attempting to catalogue some of his poor loanees. Jewell's good signings were few and far between, rather than normal.

I am keen that we don't forget just how appalling Jewell was, so that we can appreciate the amazing turnaround MM and TC have engineered.

I really hope we hang on to our young players, and add to them with a Magiltonesque CM, 2x wide pacey midfielders and 1 more striker.

Next season looks bright. We haven't been playing as well as we might, and still getting results... imagine what MM might do when he has HIS squad in there?

I don't think you can give PJ any credit for his signing for us.

PJ signed so much dross the simple laws of probability state that at some point he would have signed a good player.

Problem is the dozens of crap players that followed him into the club.

Am loving the thought of MM getting his Yorkshire broom out.....

Has he really played every minute of this season? If he can get to the end of the season that would be truly remarkable. How many players have done that before?

Sorry but although Smith has had a very good season he is not a premiership defender and Cresswell blows hot and cold and is another who would struggle in the top flight

At this moment in time there is not one member of the squad who would hack it in the top league

Fantastic goal but not the best defensively although i accept he is still young and learning his trade. Every player has a price and I would much rather get Stearman . Defence is now looking sound and Cresswell has done well for little outlay which is a huge plus.

I think the boy would do well in the premier league, and lets hope when he does, he's still wearing a blue shirt.

I thought all the villa speculation got to him as he was poor at the start of the season (although who wasnt!). Definately got better as the season's gone on.

If he goes we have to make sure we get top dollar as he's one of our prize assets, a good age and on quite a long contract.

PJ as a manager for Ipswich was woeful,to say the least. He was paid to manage and failed.Six more games at the helm, with Jewel, would of sent us sliding into Div 1.Derby fans will confirm PJ's poor managerial skills.MM and TC are the men who deserve full credit for our upturn,no one else.

Perhaps Mick should wave his knickers around Cressy's head a bit. That should put them off.

I think we should not make Tommy Smith player of the season, it will only highlight the players Premiership clubs will be looking at - Lee Martin gets my vote.

Regards to Cresswell, personally feel he's had an 'average' season and certainly took him time to get over last summers possible interest from Villa - but that goal will raise a few eyebrows with some scouts.

Sounds to me that he's drumming up business maybe he will be sold and mings is being lined up to replace him at left back. Just a thought

This means we are heading the right way! Earlier no one wanted to buy our players. Now we can finally get some transfer money in!

Town will go nowhere fast if we cant hang onto our young talent. I know people will says "thats football, except it ". But time and again we Town fans see other Clubs say "NO" to speculative offers for their better players. Its about time WE did !

I'd like to think that players will want to stay and play for McCarthy. If it were Jewell or Keane I'd could see players wanting to get away at the first opportunity

On another point, Paul Taylor will be like a great new signing next season, keep forgetting we have him!

IAmSpartacus - Bullard was the main reason we didn't go down in 2011, Chopra scored 14 goals last season -our highest scorer since Lee, and Bowyer didn't hit the heights we thought he would, but what he did do went unappreciated.

Emmanuel-Thomas? Loach? Hewitt? Chambers? Taylor? Drury? All pretty good value. Views please. Cresswell we've established.
