McCarthy: Standards Important Friday, 19th Apr 2013 06:00 Manager Mick McCarthy says he demands high standards from his players both on the field of play and on the training ground. The Blues boss was spotted telling one of his players to tuck his shirt in during an U21 game last week and says he sees an importance in details such as that: “They’re just standards aren’t they really? If you’re getting beat and you’re doing it, it doesn’t matter, does it? “You don’t wait until you’re getting beaten to start telling people to tuck their shirts in, pull their socks up, take your earrings out, take your cap off, take your earphones off, look me in the eye when I’m speaking to you, don’t look at the ground. “It’s just manners, I think. It’s just presentation of yourself, your public persona and we should be an example to people. And you can only be a good example if you’re a good example to yourself. “I hate it if they all go out with their shirt out. Start looking like a player, tuck it in. When you’ve notched three, I might let you take it out then.” He says he makes sure the squad tidy up after training, something which surprises players when they’re first asked: “I think we have a responsibility. We make sure the pitch is tidy, whether it’s getting the bottles of water off or moving the nets or getting all the kit in. “I don’t just walk in and leave it, I’ve never done it. And let me tell you, players see that. The first time you turn up and say ‘Hold on a minute, where are you going? Help the staff in with the kit before you go, we’re going to take it off’. “It’s a little bit of a surprise, but why wouldn’t they? We don’t get waited on hand and foot everywhere. It’s just me. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s just the way I am.” Regarding players’ behaviour away from the club, McCarthy says that while checks can be made into their backgrounds when they’re signed, you can’t foresee every eventuality: “Things can happen, you can go out in your car and have a terrible accident and cause carnage and not be a bad person, and you get vilified for it. “Sometimes things happen and it’s not in their character, that’s not the way it is, but it happens, so you have to deal with it. “We all like nice people, good people, but I like nice footballers, good footballers, and no matter what you do to check up on that, something could happen at any stage that could upset the apple cart with that one, and then you have to deal with it. “But the place is great,” he added. “The place is full of really good people. It’s fantastic.”
