Cresswell: Smith or Chambers Player of the Year
Saturday, 20th Apr 2013 06:00

Defensive colleagues Tommy Smith or Luke Chambers would earn Aaron Cresswell’s vote in the annual Town supporters’ poll to decide who succeeds him as Player of the Year.

But, with the fans due to cast their votes next week, the left-back is refusing to be any more specific than that and will not reveal which of his team-mates he favours for the coveted award.

Cresswell, who scooped the accolade at the end of his first season at Portman Road, said: “There are a few candidates. I’d say Tommy Smith, Luke Chambers and a few others. Personally, I’d go for Tommy or Luke.”

Given Town’s impressive record of goals conceded — just six in the last 14 games, including 10 clean sheets — it would be a major surprise if a defender did not emerge as top dog.

Cresswell added: “The gaffer and TC are always doing defensive work, set pieces and stuff like that. What we do on the training ground is what we try to take into games.

“Scott Loach has been great too. He had a bit of a setback when Hendo came back on loan from West Ham but since he got back into the side five games ago he’s kept four clean sheets.

“He literally won us the recent game at Derby with his penalty save in the first half so hopefully he can stay in the team and help to keep us up.”

Smith, but Chambers has been hugely influential in his improvement & consistency. It's a wonderful thing to have a centre half partnership that compliments each other so well & gives confidence to the rest of the team. Given their ages, they could be the heart of our team for many years to come, if we can keep them.
Holding on to Cresswell & Hyam aswell, and signing Stearman permanently, would provide us with a defensive unit good enough to challange for automatic promotion under the coaching of MM & TC.

Smith, Largely dfo to how well he has juggled international and domestic football, putting in workman like performances, and most of all he started to improve earlier in the season than Chambers. I think Chamber's reward should be the captain's arm band next year, as I think Edwards is most likely going to announce retirement next season- He's been great this year, but every passing game you can see Edward's is getting a little tiny bit more empty in his tank.

Smith just edges it for me, although Chambers is a very close second. Both have been magnificent since Mick has come in, wouldn't surprise me if we have interest in the summer for both of them.

Chambers for me as he has been in the team all season while Smith was in and out of the team at the start of the season.

I'm really torn on this one. It is definitely going to be one of the two. I have seen Tommy score two in a game and in the same match Luke do some quality defending. I'll keep thinking for a week or if I've still not decided it'll come down to the flip of a coin !!!
