McCarthy Impressed By Marriott
Wednesday, 1st May 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s been impressed with Academy Player of the Year Jack Marriott. The 18-year-old has netted 26 goals for the U18s and U21s this season and is one of five second-year scholars to have been rewarded with the offer of a one-year professional contract.

McCarthy said: “He’s doing very well, Jack. He scores his goals, he’s very industrious and I’ve been delighted with him in the U21s. He’s got to keep doing it.”

But he warns that Marriott, who hails from Kettering, faces a battle to get ahead of senior pros such as David McGoldrick, Frank Nouble and Michael Chopra and win a place in the team next season: “It’s far from a level playing field, he’s down at the bottom of a big slope, but it’s only him that can make it level.

“I don’t want them at the top of the slope to make it level for him by playing badly. He’s got to get up and play as well as them and get in the team. That’s the challenge for all of them.”

The Blues boss ruled out including Marriott in his squad for last week’s home game with Birmingham with Town still not mathematically safe, however, it would be little surprise if the youngster was included in the 18 at Burnley on Saturday.

Meanwhile, McCarthy says he’s been pleased with the contribution made by Daryl Murphy, who has been on loan for the season from Celtic: “He’s done well, whoever he’s played with [up front], and he’s played with a number of them.

“He’s played down the left-hand side, that’s not his favoured position, he wants to play up front.

“He’s played on the left at times when I’ve had to change it and he’s done well and he’s nicked his goals. He’s certainly had an impact at the place.”

Now that Town’s Championship status has been confirmed for a 12th successive season, McCarthy plans to speak to the out of contract and loan players in the next few days, although he has previously said he’d be interested in keeping hold of the 30-year-old.

Murphy, who is in his third loan spell at the club, has said he would like to stay at Portman Road on a permanent basis.

I like Murphy, but he doesn't appear to have the experienced old head of a player of his advanced years. He's just kind of functional. Turns up and gets the job done. I would way prefer someone young and pacey on the left. If we are going to keep him he needs to be permanently up top with one of the other lads.

As for Chopra. Maybe he will stop living in the past next season and help us push for playoffs. He is an excellent striker who probably didn't get enough service or pitch time this season.

Good luck Jack on Saturday. I might put a fiver on him getting a hattrick. Should get me around 6 grand I reckon.

I'm a big fan of Murphy, but not on the wing

Would keep Murphs. Gives us options and can get a few goals. Hopefully Marriott can get a taste of first team footie at the weekend.

I hope jack plays against burnley but not 5 minutes at the end like Hewitt got a couple of months ago, him and murphy up front to start.

I've always liked Murphy, he is a very useful forward and can make goals for others as well as getting a few himself, I hope Mick decides to keep him.

Isn't it nice to see our manager recognise we have a talented youth player rather than cash in on him at the first chance! Hopefully Marriott gets a run out at Burnley.

With regards to Murphy, if you asked me last year if i'd want him permanenty i'd laugh in your face but he's done well under McCarthy and if he doesn't want massive wages he'd be a good signing.

I'd like to see more of our young players getting sent out on loan to League 1/2 and really making an impression and improving. If he won't get chances here send him on loan to a lower leage team to bang in some goals and become a better player.

shefkuqi32 agree with loaning youn players ot but we dont want l1 and 2 effectively becoming feeder clubs filled with loanees.
i think it may be time for a rule stating that all clubs must have 2 players n the starting line up who camethrough the clubs academy.
this would be good start as we would need say six in the first team squad to cover this.
the clubs would have to makesure players of sufficent quality come through
