McCarthy Confirms Player Exits
Tuesday, 7th May 2013 17:54

Boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed the exits of midfielders Lee Martin and Andy Drury and keeper Arran Lee-Barrett and that striker Michael Chopra and midfielder Jay Emmanuel-Thomas have been made available for transfer.

McCarthy told the club site: “Lee, Andy and Arran are all out of contract and have been released. I want to look at other options but we wish them every success for the future.

“I have also spoken to Michael Chopra and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and told them that I don’t see them as being part of my plans going forward and they are free to look for another club.”

Town have also confirmed that keeper Jason Brown, who joined on a short-term contract in March, will not be extending his time at Portman Road.

Another aspects to the Lee Martin signing which makes me shudder is the cost to the Club of the player over the four years of his contract.

Estimating a sign on fee of say, £1.5 million and a salary of £13,000 per week, would bring his cost in at around a cool £4.2 million give or take a fiver. That's £1,051,000 per season.

At an average cost of £400, it amounts to over 2,600 season ticket holders cash down u bend, each and every one of the past four seasons!!!!!!!

I know my sums are only estimates, but if they are anywhere near the truth, it is staggering how much we have all paid with so little quality or goalscoring output in return. He has appeared to put the effort in, particularly since RK's dismissal, so I don't hold that against him

Goodbye Lee Martin. I for one are not sorry to see you depart, but I do wish you the best in the future, wherever that may be.

I am deeply concerned as to how that money grabbing so called striker, namely Michael Chopra; will be dealt with. I'm sure MM will know what to do but we need this A*sehole off the books. Every time he draws money out of his account he is laughing at all us Town fans that pay hard earned cash to see the blues. It's both insulting and immoral. Every time his name is mentioned my face turns BLUE, I suppose thats one good use he has. COYB

Sorry, but personally I have never rated drury. Just my opinion though. Odd this football, and opinions, as I seem to be in the minority! However, can't fault the effort of any of he released players and I want to wish them all well in their future careers. Reality is several will have to leave if Mick is able to build his own squad. I have every faith in mick and his team.

Re the goalkeeping situation, Wayne Hennesy or Craig Gordon will be here by pre-season, just a hunch, maybe even Henderson if West Ham sign another keeper, as they tried to do in the last transfer window. I still suspect MM does not see Scott Loach as his number one.

Cresswell scored more goals than any of Drury, JET or Martin in the league this season and only 1 less than Chopra. He also had as many assists as Martin and more than Drury, JET and Chopra. Mick has been pragmatic and hopefully the new blood he brings in will create and score more than our left back !!

Sorry it didn't work out for these players, I dont think any of them, apart from Chopra, didnt give 100% for the club, it just hasn't worked out but thats football.

I genuinely wish them all the best but, JET aside, I can't see any of them proving MM wrong, JET may even fall into the etha unless he realises his potential.

I've heard Wolves fans pathetically blaming MM and TC all day for their demise, they have got what they deserved and most of them dont seem to realise that they started going downhill the day MM was sacked!

That's it isn't it? That's all the contentious, fractious, dividing opinion players gone or on tgeir way out to my mind! No-one on massive wages that we know of either! Things really are looking up!

Hopefully we'll get early offers for both JET and chops! If we dont and they are here next season, it would be nice if They both got their heads straight (ala Hyam) and knuckled down to win another contract...but that'll sadly never happen!!

Hope you're right in that rumour IrishTim! Would love to see him here.

Agree with Mick on all of these decisions from a footballing viewpoint. Some I'll miss as good pros; some I won't very much.

Always worrying when decent squad players are released prior to others being signed. I thing we've done this before, found no one wants to come, and then its back to loans.

ALB - decent squad player, and now there is no back up to SL

Drury - works his backside off when asked. Maybe not top quality, but a good servant to the club.

JET - who knows - sometimes theres that magic sparkle, but its all too intermittent. Not sure he should have been let go that easily.

Chopra - bit of a liability and failed to deliver on promises.

Martin - worked hard (sometimes very hard). Simply too expensive for what he brings.

Roll on August....

Can't understand idiots who claim it is a shame these players are going. We need to root out the players who have put us in this position the last two seasons. I hoper N'daw and Murphy go as well, we need two class midfield players to provide guile and not constantly kick the ball up in the air. Football played on the ground by players who wont run through a brick wall but have the brains to look for the door.

Yes JET may have picked out a "few" good passes in his time here at town, but let's be perfectly honest he's lazy as plank of wood. Glad to see the back of him.

Glad Martin has gone hopefully Judge can come in. Drury was unlucky not to get more game time, now would like to see a McGuegan type player from forest who can create goals & score too.
The Doyle rumor would be good if it's true, he can take chopra's place if anyone wants him.
De'viers if Spelt right would be good competition for Loach in goal. Mick McCarthy signed him when he was at wolves. Hopefully stearman will be signed!! Mcgoldrick signed & hopefully from loans murphy, Tabb and maybe Kisnorbo as back up will be here too. This would be 8 great players to sign in my opinion for next season!!!!! Oh yeah & Skuse 9 players!!!

Have to say I'm pleased to see the back of Martin. Chopra can bugger off, but would like JET to stay and show how big a talent he is. ALB - can't help thinking what a mistake Jewell made dropping Fulop just before the 1-5 nightmare v Nodge in 2011. ALB never recovered from that horror show. Drury, good pro, but not Championship standard. The no 1 priority for me is getting Stearman in. Our back four looked solid from the moment he came to us. Hope we get Judge - I live in Nottingham and he's very highly rated in these parts.

Well done Mick, we don't need players here for 'decent cover', we need the whole squad staking their claim for the first team and have real competition for places. ALB and Drury were never up to it lets be honest. We cannot afford to have people here just to make up the numbers. COYB

I do think that Lee Martin was unfortunate to be played out wide most of the time. When he played down the middle he was very effective,I was surprised that MM didn't work this out, after all we lack tenacity and creativity in the middle of the park

I also think Drury is a loss. The reason we survived last year was the partnership of him and Hyam in the middle. They also got good results playing together earlier this season. Confident he will find a good club and hopefully do well.

Chopra JET Martin - you can see what Mick is doing. They are the standout "personalities" in the squad, the rest of the team are more straightforward and disciplined. He is making room for his own team, gives me hope.

all players that have worn our shirt deserve to move with respect.. I'm sure at least one will return to haunt us.. that's the way the cookie crumbles.. Not sure if Thomas and Chopra have done enough to be signed up for someone else.. Hope for their sakes they find the hunger for the game.. If they stay, may not be a negative...

All the best to all of them, sorry but it has'nt worked out/you don't fit in with MM's plans so lets not waste space slating them or pinning for them lets just see who we get but my money is on Judge to replace martin/JET and just to put it out there how about D.J Campbell up front the release of these players will have freed up alot of wages and we know he can score plus last I heard he was only on loan at blackburn but not playing sounless I've missed something (very possible) I think there could be a good chance of this. The keeper situation is one I would not like to try and guess about.

Lee Martin, energy but no brain, Chopra former goalscorer (for other clubs) no brain, JET exciting but lacks the team ethic, all three should have done far more for our Club. Drury and ALB have never let us down but would struggle to get a team place if we are to push for top 6 next year.

tractorfromonga what on earth are you on? Do you honestly think MM doesn't have plans in mind? He cannot sign anyone at this precise moment, so your comments are ridiculous.

As for the departures, ITFC has underachieved for too long, there is no longer room for sentiment, ALB was disastrous at times, I still remember the days of him getting sent off for handling about 10 yards out of his own box.

Martin, everyone knew he was going, failed to deliver in 4 years here.

Drury, I struggle to see how any of you can rate him, he bought nothing to the table, and as for you claiming him to be a good squad player, why on earth would town want to keep hold of those, better off bringing someone from the youth ranks in as cover or a "squad player" than using a guy bought from Luton that will do well to find himself a club in League 1

Chopra, aside from being blocked from his twitter for asking why on earth he thought it was acceptable to change his display picture to him donning an NUFC shirt, with town bottom of the league, another striker in a long line that hasn't cut it, this guy was supposed to guarantee 20+ a season, as stated above me, clearly pound notes mean an awful lot to Chopra, and his comments this season surrounding certain issues have been an absolute joke, maybe his comments over his transfer listing hint that he's no longer so confident finding clubs that will put up with his crap, just because he has previous history of being able to tear up this league.

And as for JET, MM and TC have had long enough with him to assess and obviously they conclude he just hasnt got the determination to strive at this profession, though I will miss drinking Jagerbombs with him in Sin.

Craig Gordon certainly won't be here as keeper as he has all but retired from the game due to injury and is undertaking his coaching badges and helping out at Dumbarton - I think - or somewhere similar.
