Town Linked With Move for Broadfoot
Friday, 24th May 2013 17:30

Town are reported to have offered a deal to out-of-contract Blackpool defender Kirk Broadfoot. The 28-year-old, who is one of a number of players said to be on their way out of Bloomfield Road, was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues in March, when Blackburn, Leeds and Nottingham Forest were also linked with the Scottish international, and last summer before he joined the Seasiders from Rangers.

Broadfoot, who is 6ft 3in tall, was a youth player at Hibernian but started his senior career with St Mirren where he made more than 150 appearances in five years before moving on to Rangers on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2007.

Capped four times at full level by Scotland, scoring once, in addition to appearances at U21 and B levels, Irvine-born Broadfoot made 106 starts and 12 sub appearances for Rangers, scoring once during his five years with the Glasgow club before his move to the Tangerines last summer.

Broadfoot, who won three Scottish titles and a League Cup while at Ibrox, began his Seasiders career playing at right-back but more latterly was utilised at centre-half. He made 34 Blackpool starts during 2012/13, scoring two goals.

Blackpool have offered the Scot a contract, however, better terms are reportedly on offer at Town.

A right-back who can also double up as a centre-half is very much on Mick McCarthy's summer wish-list with Richard Stearman having returned to Wolves at the end of the season.

Stearman impressed during his spell at Town but the fee Wolves would want for the 25-year-old is likely to see the Blues' boss look elsewhere.

My best mate is a Rangers fan and he says he's probably one of the worst defenders he's ever seen in his life! Presumably he'll be a back up player if his information is anything to go by.

Be a good signing, lots of experience and at a good age too.....if Blackpool have offered a new deal and Blackburn and other Clubs were interested not so long ago then he can't be that bad, great squad player as can cover right back and CB.

God no!! His nickname in Scotland is Clubfoot. He's hard working but lacking in ability.

Joe Broadfoot had two spells with us in the 60's. Tremendous pace and shot and exciting to watch.

As for Kirk, he's a good height and Blackpool have offered terms so they apparently consider him to be worth keeping.

A right back who doubles up for a centre half...not sure he's going to fit into Mr Stearman's shoes. Sounds like nobody knows that much about him and being Scottish doesn't fill me with confidence.

Any chance we could have a Blue Peter inspired totaliser on the TWTD homepage to count the number of players linked to a move to Town?

We could all then have a guess at how many the totaliser will reach prior to the start of next season and the nearest guess wins a Blue Peter, sorry TWTD badge!

To all you rumour gloomers cheer up, this is what pre-season is all about!

blue moon09, apologies for saying this, but I am not sure that Phil cannot win by your thinking. This story has also cropped up on several Blackpool forums, and many Seasiders are expecting him to come here.

I have had a rummage through the Blackpool forums to gather their thoughts on Broadfoot, summarised in the link below. They are sorry to lose him, wherever he ends up.

I've lived in Scotland for the last 13 years & my Son is a Rangers fan. I wouldn't play him my team but I guess he'd be ok as a squad player. Told my lad that he could be joining the Town & he reckons it would be a bad move, would rather have Stearman but like the article reads his price tag is too much!!

Looks like MM will be targeting free signings this summer!? This player does have some Premier quality although would he gate-crash the Smith-Chambers partnership? Could want a meaty wage as well, haven't seen enough of him to be convinced but I think he would be a good signing for the squad.
