Town Amongst Clubs Linked With Spurr
Tuesday, 28th May 2013 22:10

Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs reported to be interested in out-of-contract Doncaster Rovers left-back Tommy Spurr. Reading, Blackburn, Derby and Birmingham are also said to be eyeing the 25-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday defender.

Leeds-born Spurr started his career with the Owls where he made 205 starts and six substitute appearances, scoring seven times, before moving to Doncaster for a fee reported to be £200,000 in June 2011.

The 6ft 1in tall defender was a regular in the Rovers side which won promotion from League One back to the Championship during 2012/13 and new terms are expected to be on offer at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Spurr was previously mentioned in connection with the Blues in March 2008 when then-boss Jim Magilton dismissed the link.

Town are unlikely to be in the market for a left-back unless current first-choice Aaron Cresswell moves on during the close season.

Aston Villa, whose scouts were regularly at Portman Road in the second half of 2012/13, are understood to be considering whether to revive last summer’s interest in the former Tranmere man with the 23-year-old on manager Paul Lambert’s list of potential summer targets.

Depends on the money for cresswell, if we can get £3.5m+ which 100% reinvested then he is an ideal replacement + extra signings to give us a real chance

I'm spurred on by the thought of it.

"Reported to be interested"

Unless Cresswell is sold it will not happen and better terms will be on offer at some of the other clubs mentioned anyway!

To be honest from people i've spoken to Tyrone Mings played well when given a chance at Burnley so i'm sure he's more than good enough back up.

I wonder what the ratio is for rumours to actual signings? There are so many names thrown around during the football closed 'silly' season. Haven't really learnt anything from this story apart from finding out that bluemikey100 considers him to be 'hot'.

We have mings I don't know if this is a real target or not, we need midfielders rather than defenders!

I agree with Michael11. I was really impressed with Tyrone Mings at the Burnley match. Just one game I know, but we haven't got the parachute money that so many Championship Clubs have and we need to invest in and believe in the younger players. Look what happened with Tommy Smith once someone with a decent football brain - MM - got behind him.

Shopping list as follows:- Goalkeepr X 1, attacking midfielders X 2, strikers x 1, Right back X 1 (As back up for Hewitt). With respect to this story, I sincerely hope Cressey stays. Lambert can bugger off.

We have five defenders. Unless im being silly here I think one or two more wouldn't go a miss. Are you eyeing up Tyrone Mings as the sole back up in every defensive position? Who knows he may have Cresswell lined up for left mid too???

Can someone tell me what our two new scouts are doing? .all we seem to be linked with are ex wolves or players that we were linked with in the past under JM.RK.& PJ .Thought there might have been a few new names

We won't see any transfer activity until middle of June when players have come back of holidays. Also remember premier league clubs don't name there squads until middle of august I think so you'll most probably see a couple of loans come in then. As dissboyitfc said MM transfers just happen so be patient its still only may !!

Always enjoy the endless links over the Summer! Am also pleased we are being linked to some good honest players, who are not necessarily well know. Hopefully we will build a good squad - with a mixture of youth and experience and not rely on too many loans (although one or two are I suspect inevitable for any Championship Club).

Our defenders should be left alone, we've really improved at the back and it would be a shame to ruin it! Yes get maybe one of two more defenders so we have back up but we should really be looking at strikers and attacking midfielders who score goals, we need to be getting up the table! If Cressy leaves it wouldn't surprise me but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't on the other hand if he does then this is Ipswich all over getting rid of the best players and getting no where.

I do agree with RobPlayer above but keep Cressy, PLEASE!!!! If he has to go, make sure its a good deal (£4 million +) with a reasonable sell on clause.
