Ex-Loanee Campbell Weighing Up Options
Wednesday, 29th May 2013 11:50

Former Blues loanee DJ Campbell says he could move on from now-Championship QPR this summer with his contract at Loftus Road up this summer. Campbell, 31, was with the Blues between October and January and ended the season as Town’s top scorer with 10 goals from 17 games.

With Blues manager Mick McCarthy having expressed his interest in keeping the striker, Campbell subsequently joined Blackburn on loan, a deadline day permanent switch having failed to go through in time.

However, his season was curtailed in early March by a foot injury after only five starts, two sub appearances and no goals for the Lancastrians.

Campbell says he’s currently weighing up his options: "I'm still under contract but this is my last year so we're speaking to a few people at the minute, as well as QPR.

"It's the club that I support so we will look at it and we will see what happens and hopefully we can sort something out soon.

"It's my team but every manager is different and they have different plans so it's just football, I'm experienced now and 31 so I know how it works.

"Within the next month or two we should know something but at the minute I am just trying to get fit again and that is the main thing."

Whether McCarthy will renew his interest in Campbell remains to be seen, however, an approach seems unlikely until Michael Chopra, who along with Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been made available for transfer, has found a new club.

Meanwhile, we understand former Town keeper Brian Murphy is set to sign a new contract at QPR with his current terms up this summer.

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Owen Garvan has signed a new two-year deal at Crystal Palace, who won promotion to the Premier League at Wembley on Monday.

The Irishman was one of three ex-Town players to feature for the Eagles during Monday’s play-off final in which they beat Watford 1-0, with Damien Delaney starting and former academy schoolboy Stuart O’Keefe coming off the bench. Ex-Blues keeper Lewis Price was an unused sub.

Today is the 13th anniversary of Town's 4-2 play-off final victory over Barnsley.

I don't want him back I think he would not be anywhere near as good, waste of money, remember bringing jmmy bullard back

Personally I wouldn't go for Campbell again. He scored goals for us and helped to keep us up last season but he might prove to be another Jimmy Bullard, in that his performance drop considerably after signing him permanently.
I don't think we could afford his wages and I can't see him scoring the same amount of goals again. We should look at younger, hungrier strikers if we want to improve upfront.
Although I would like us to sign Murphy on a permanent deal as he can be a useful centre forward to hassle defenders and bring others into play. Plus, who else do we have that can win headers upfront?

He has gone and it should be left that way.

We didn't get him because of his demands and seeing as he has 1 year left at QPR, I can't see that changing.

TBH, he had something to prove when he came to us, now that has changed.

Signing him would be a big mistake.

He should have stayed with us, was in fine scoring form, can't understand why he wouldn't have wanted to keep that going, went to Blackburn and his season fizzled out. Cheers for your help though DJ.

Wonder if he regrets not staying in Hull instead of dashing across to Blackburn.

We'll always be thankful for the goals, but we need to look elsewhere (and with McGoldrick, Nouble we may already have done)

not a chance, he wouldn't play for £5k a week

we should move on, got faith in mcgoldrick and nouble bagging us plenty of goals next year providing we add some creativity and pace behind them.

Always was a fan of Owen Garvan, never quite understood how he fell out of favour at Town, good to see him play in the Prem next year.

With respect to DJ, if we can get him on a decent wage for a couple of years he could be alright. Still would rather go down the building a team with more of a long term future though, ie a Dwight Gayle kind of younger prospect

Not for me,not now..very grateful for what he did for us but he misled us by saying he didn't want another loan move, then went on loan to Blackburn!

Nouble & McGoldrick are the way forward with maybe Murphy,Marriott +1 as back up.

Agree with the general consensus...DJ is a player I have a lot of affection for given his goals, and commitment, helped us out at a very difficult time. But he moved on, and so have we. With 2 quality strikers now on board in McGoldrick and Nouble, we need to use our resources well and prioritise more needy areas such as a pacey wide man and technically gifted playmaker - youngsters whose transfer values can increase in the future

Totally agree about Garvan ..Shefkuqi32 .... we have been crying out for Garvans passing ability and set pieces since he left . No surprise Palaces fortunes turned around again when he returned from injury into the side .
Oh what the team could have been with Mac,Garvan,Walters,Trotter,Norris, Rhodes,Wickham ?
As for DJ ,I cannot see why any Town fan would not want him back if a deal could be done ,he has constantly scored goals in this division and was a major factor in our season turning around when MM first came in and us avoiding relegation

Whenever a young player comes up through the ranks or someone comes in and does well on loan, there should be an ITFC manual handed them. History has told us two things:

1 - If you're young, you've come up through the academy, you're a regular and you're doing well...do not leave for any money otherwise your career will go to rubbish and you will not hit the dizzying heights expected of you. Stay and learn the game more before moving on.

2 - If you come in and do well on loan and are offered a deal, take it because if you move on you'll lose momentum, not do as well and coming back to Town won't be favourable with the fans you turned your back on.

I can't think of too many youth academy players or good loan signings these two rules don't apply to!!!

Seeing that potential team makes me still so angry at Roy Keane for being responsible for letting the likes of Garvan, Trotter and Rhodes leave. I hate his face and curse him every time hes on ITV football.

Not getting too worked up about close season rumours;but would have liked Judge though. Will just have to leave it to Mick and Marcus, although I still think will get most player deals tied up a bit earlier this year.
Surprised that so many on here wouldn't be keen on DJ's return.
Hopefully Mr Evans will allow our manager to spend a bit of money in transfer market despite FFP,as Mr McCarthy has so far only spent about £125000,thats about what Sir Bobby paid for the first David Johnson 40 years ago!

He done great for us when he was here, but now we have Nouble & Mcgoldrick, maybe Murphy will sign & also Taylor could be our missing link. Hopefully chopra will leave then hopefully bring in a replacement for him. Can't see it being Dj, it could well be Ebanks Blake - I HOPE!!

Hmm not sure. Only if his wage demands are reasonable and a 1 or 2 year contract at most. He was excellent for us on loan and i'll always be grateful for basically keeping us up. However, you have to remember the majority of his goals were actually penalties.

I thought his contract was up this season? In any event, a backwards step and frankly, as he reportedly rejected a £24K per WEEK deal with Hull - he's completely out of our price range. Can't see him moving on for less than he's on.
