Wigan Again Linked With Cresswell
Tuesday, 2nd Jul 2013 15:30

Newly-relegated Wigan Athletic are again being linked with a move for Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell. The 23-year-old was claimed to be a Latics target by some of Sunday’s papers and are now said to be ready to firm up their interest.

According to the weekend reports, Cresswell was viewed as a potential replacement for Honduran Maynor Figueroa, who has joined Hull City, however, Wigan have already added another left-back, Blackpool's Stephen Crainey, to their squad.

Cresswell has previously been mentioned in connection with Southampton, Aston Villa, Fulham and Crystal Palace this summer, although long-time admirers Villa have since signed another left-back, Spaniard Antonio Luna.

Interest in Cresswell will come as no surprise to Town manager Mick McCarthy, who said that he was expecting it towards the end of the season. The Blues boss said he views the defender as “a Premier League footballer in the making”.

An offer in excess of £3 million may well be enough to tempt Town to sell, although the Blues may be looking for rather more, with McCarthy subsequently using the cash to strengthen his squad for the season ahead.

The left-back, who is contracted to Town until June 2015, joined the Blues from Tranmere at the end of his terms at Prenton Park in the summer of 2011.

Rovers are entitled to 20% of the profit Town would make on the £420,000 they paid for Cresswell if he is sold. A Football League tribunal set a compensation figure of an initial £240,000 plus milestone clauses with only a £100,000 payment on promotion to the Premier League not triggered.

Elsewhere, Town and Leicester continue to be linked with Wolves midfielder Karl Henry, a player Blues boss McCarthy rates very highly. However, the transfer-listed former skipper at Molineux, who is contracted until 2016, appears to be beyond the Blues’ current budget.

Would be v disappointed to see him leave for another Championship club. If we have any ambitions this season, we shouldn't be strengthening our rivals

I think it's a bit of a side way step for Cresswell and if we're serious about pushing for play offs or promotion this year then strengthening a team in our division doesn't make sense to me. However, If Mick feels that he needs the money to spend on 2 or 3 players to improve us then i'll back him.

I can't wait to see the very positive spin that h32 puts on this!

Wouldnt have a problem with him choosing the prem, but to go to Wigan and Coyle, I doubt it.

JWM - The link is spin, no need to put a 'spin' on it.

Cresswell won't leave unless it's to a Premier League club and the money is right. Wigan have no chance. Sideways step for Aaron. He could do much better than Wigan anyway.

Unfortunately, Wigan have a considerably larger budget than us, and if they're prepared to offer him vastly better terms than we can, plus we get a decent fee, it's a move that will happen.

I'd hate to see him go, but the reality is that we cannot compete financially with the likes of those coming down with parachute payments.

Also worth noting he's a young lad and has to look to earn himself as much money as possible when it's offered. Unless he's convinced Town will get promoted, which is a gamble I wouldn't take.

Seems pointless, no reason to move to a non prem club, unless he's unhappy at town, which I haven't heard he is. Still think villa may swoop, but would be great to keep home and smith. I personally would prefer to keep them both apposed to sign more player. If we keep him it shows mm and me's intent and ambition

JMW - im glad you think this is a joking matter ,its because of you and so many others who believe anything put out by the club and are ready to accept mediocrity that we are in this sad state, and anyone who disagrees obviously doesnt understand anything about football, or the world or in fact anything - FACT !

As he isnt here i thought i would do my impression !! Anygood ?

My concern isn't so much whether we sell him, but more that I have little faith that ME would make the money available for incoming transfers. I realise FFP is in place, but we seem to be on a very strict (and low) budget - there are positives and negatives of this.

Cresswell is a good player, who started last season (under PJ) very poorly (as did most). But he improved significantly upon MM's arrival and ideally I'd like to see him stay - along with Stearman (signed) - so the back 4 remain the same. We conceded little.

I have heard the he could be a bit homesick for the northwest but we should not let him go for less than £4mil and tranmeres 20%. Thi could be a huge blow a potintial doomsday senario is that MM has his hands tied trying to biuld a budget side good enough for the playoffs, we have a poor 1st half of the season and MM calls it a day and we are left up a certain creek without a paddle. Not saying its gonna happen just that it could if we cant spend the money just to keep the quality players we already have.

jas, I understand whre youe coming from with regard th ffp, but any money we receive in transfer fees is exra to what the owner can invest this year. and I think its already been made clear that any money received in transfer fees, will be reinvested into the playing budget. thus, hile it would be disappointing to see him go, I feel it may be a necessary sacrifice the club has to make to sign other player to achieve our goals. a similar situation really to when we sold k. dyer. remember then that most town fans were unhappy about his sale, but it was ultimately selling him that allowed burley to sign the players that got us promoted the next season.

@jas099 - Cresswell did not have a particularly outstanding season in my opinion and if any player was the weak link defensively it was him! but as we know has a good left foot, anything over 3 mill and we should let him go and would be good business certainly if it means we can get Stearman in.

Can see Cresswell going but not to Wigan. The lad must have more ambition than that!

NO! Don't go Cresswell, if you do go, at least join a team in the prem, such as Fulham, Crystal Palace, Southampton or Aston Villa, a team willing to pay more than £3 million! Aim High not same league as us.

sell him then we can afford to pay off chops and jet

The moment we start selling our best players to smaller clubs with similar ambition, we wont go anywhere

He won't go to Wigan, nor do I think the Villa or Southampton links are likely. The one I would be most concerned by would be Everton, when Baines goes to Man Utd. It would make sense in a number of ways & you really couldn't blame the lad at all. Should manage to get a price there though, especially if they get £16m+ for Baines.

It will all come down to money. Say they offered him just £1000 per week more than he earn here, that's and extra £12K a year. He would be stupid not to move.

Might be different if he had to uproot kids from school, etc. but he doesn't have that worry. Add in the fact that he comes from that corner of the Country, what is there to stop him.

He may consider what would be best for his long term career and improving as a footballer, but at the end of the day, money talks!
