Southend Defender Linked
Thursday, 4th Jul 2013 10:04

Former Southend right-back Sean Clohessy has been offered a contract by the Blues, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. The 26-year-old, who has also been linked with League One side the MK Dons this summer, turned down new terms at Roots Hall at the end of 2012/13.

Rumours that Clohessy is on Town’s radar were circulating on the TWTD forum yesterday with Town looking for a right-back to compete with Elliott Hewitt during the season ahead, Richard Stearman having returned to his parent club Wolves at the end of the season.

Croydon-born Clohessy started his career with Arsenal’s academy, before moving on to Gillingham in 2005. After four years with the Gills he joined non-league Salisbury City initially on a season-long loan.

In July 2010 the 5ft 10 in tall defender signed for Bath City but prior to the start of the new season joined Southend, where he has spent the last three years, making 166 appearances and scoring five goals.

Last season, he was named Southend’s Player of the Year and in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.

Meanwhile, Blues target Paul Anderson was left out of the Bristol City squad for their opening pre-season friendly, a 1-0 win at Ashton & Backwell, last night due to a "slight niggling injury".

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Massimo Luongo has rejoined Swindon, where he spent time towards the end of 2012/13, on a season-long loan from Spurs.

Did anyone else just feel sick to their stomach reading 'Southend defender linked' and thinking of a time when it was Bilel Mohsni?

I went to the Johnsons paint trophy final Crewe vs Southend and I remember thinking Clohessy was quite skilful quick and loved to create chances

And Mohsni errors lead to both goals

Ryan Cresswell is another strong defender who often shows up on the score sheet he would be my ideal Southend target

Told you so!

Actually I didn't but I thought I'd post it before anyone else. In fact I know virtually nothing about this player other than what's posted here although I could Google a fact and try and sound clever.

Ultimately there need to be at least two players in every position so it's a logical move.

Sam Ricketts is joining Wolves so perhaps that may be a sign Stearman is leaving?

Maybe Hewitt is going to be given a chance further forward? Like the sound of that I.e. some crosses for once!

Sounds like a decent player. I think Stearman will leave Wolves, we just need to be patient.

Told you so.

And I can actually say that because I did tell you so ;)

Good player from what I hear, having done some research last night after I was told we'd offered him a deal.

Must be half decent, be good competition for Hewitt.
Still would like Stearman to be signed!!
We will see I guess!!

I think we're beginning to learn that just because we offer players a deal does not mean they will take it. :)
What will be, will be.
Other platitudes are available in a range of sizes and prices to suit all tastes.

Essential backup for Hewitt - sounds decent enough!

Have watched Southend a fair bit over last couple of seasons - he is a consistent performer likes to get forward and good tackler - whether can make the step up to the Championship is questionable (particularly on pace) but on a free would be a good acquistion (low wages also). On Cresswell - dont see that happening as wants to go back North for family reasons.

I would have taken Sam Ricketts. Reliable and versatile when healthy.

clegg - Ricketts is primarily a left back, Stearman is a right back (or centre back); so don't think it will have any bearing.
This guy Clohessy sounds decent - player of the year & in team of the year. But is it anymore than just a tabloid link?!?

If this is instead of Stearman, I'll be disappointed!

realise Stearman had a good time on loan with us, this does not guarantee form will continue if signed up permanently. if it happens it happens, if not so be it..

If true this means Stearman's not coming!
