Young Blues Win at Chippenham
Saturday, 13th Jul 2013 16:02

A young Town XI grabbed a last-minute 1-0 win at Southern League Premier Division side Chippenham Town on Saturday afternoon, Joe Ward (pictured), a trialist from Chelmsford City, netting the game’s only goal from a Cory Galvin cross.

The home side came close to breaking the deadlock after 11 minutes when Greg Tindle's towering header was cleared off the line by Kyle Hammond.

Alan Griffin forced Town keeper Michael Crowe into a good save down low shortly after, prior to Griffin heading over when he should have hit the target.

The big centre forward came close again after getting the better of Omar Sowunmi, but his lobbed effort landed on the roof of the net.

After the break, Crowe made another good save to keep the scores level, before Jon Leddy hit a 25-yard effort that Chippenham keeper Ben John did well to gather.

The second period saw numerous substitutions from both sides as the players struggled to cope with the heat.

As the final whistle approached, Aaron Ledgister's freekick deflected off the Town wall and wrong-footed sub keeper Jacob Marsden, who was relieved to see the ball rebound off the crossbar before being cleared.

With a minute to go Town grabbed the winner. Irish U17 international Galvin crossed from the left and trialist Ward, who broke into Blue Square Bet South side Chelmsford’s first team last season and has also spent time at West Ham this summer, swept the ball home from 12 yards.

Chippenham will feel they ought to have taken one of their many chances, but overall Town defended well and took their chance when it came. Matt Clarke had another good game at centre-half while Jack Marriott worked hard up front.

The game was organised as part of the deal which saw Tyrone Mings join the Blues in December but the 20-year-old was withdrawn due to injury this morning.

After the game, various Town players commented on the extreme heat on Twitter, amongst them first-year scholar Clarke: “Hottest weather I've ever played in, good win though!”

Town XI: Crowe (Marsden 62), Hammond (Emmanuel 28), October (Willbye 28), Leddy, Sowunmi (Fowler 36), Clarke (Thompson 46), Winter (Galvin 46), Ward (Fagbohan 46), Marriott (Ramadan 62), Lawrence (Bishop 46), Timlin (Ward 66). Att: 415.

Despite all the moaning about a young team, it was great to see town playing down in the SW. Hard match for a small Ipswich Town XI against a strong a willing Chippenham team. Ward took his goal well and looked a decent player in the last 20 mins.

Crowe needs to get some kicking practice, not up to scratch and most amusing !

Good to hear we're looking at another trialist. Another win, they all count. Hope Chippenham fans don't feel hard done by, with Mings not being able to play.

Agreed corshamblue, Chippenham proved to be worthy opposition and it was great to see the Town youngsters pushed. Regardless of what was made of this game beforehand, credit must be given to the Bluebirds - they played well and made the game entertaining.

Car in the shade bubbled up to a nice 33.5! Not sure what temp it was on the pitch. Something close to bloody hot. Good to see two drinks breaks in each half and a good use of subs, Town team in 2nd half much better at moving the ball on the ground. Hard yellowing pitch with a few undulations didn't help. Chippenham put up a good fight and played some good football, didn't deserve to lose TBH.

I wouldn't be too upset to take a look at their No7 either. Good touch, quick, liked running at the left back, Hammond and October glad to take a break! Created a number of chances which their CFs squandered with aplomb!

Bluetone - someone said that was better than their usual attendance. Decent numbers of Town fans there.

@Bluetone

Why should he feel ashamed? Would you rather we injure our first 11 for the sake of them getting another 200 people through the door? They wanted a friendly with an Ipswich Town team. it's then up to Mick to decide what team we take. Even with our young kids we still beat them so what would be the point in taking the first team anyway?

@ Michael11 Did I ever suggest sending our first 11? it would not hurt us to include one or two fringe players. This was part of the Tyrone Mings transfer agreement. Our actions might be OK for other clubs but there was a time when we were better than that and honoured our obligations.
Apparently those days are in the past. Yes indeed TWTD

Enjoyed the game, I spoke to a few Chippenham fans and they understood why we played the side we did - more disappointed that Tyrone was injured.

I have to say HarryfromBath got it spot on and agree with corshamblue, their number 7 'Super' Joe McClennan looked very good in the first half.

Corsham Blue, I had forgotten about Crowe's kicking until you mentioned it (ahem!). It was a terrific day out, and we were made to feel very welcome by a friendly and well run club.

They were physically more dominant, and we definitely rode our luck in the first half, as indeed we did with their free kick which smashed against the crossbar just before our winner.

We really should keep an eye on their right midfielder/winger Joe McLennan. He was sharper than many of our players and had a really decent touch on him. If James Guthrie (who plays a similar role on their left side) wasn't injured, we really could have been in trouble.

I understood the frustration of supporters on Friday, and it would have been wonderful for everyone to say hello to Mick, but on balance I think that he was right to save our first team. It was a roasting hot day and a bumpy pitch, and he would have learned little from our first XI winning 4-0. The two teams were well matched, and it added to the entertainment on what was an highly enjoyable day.

Harry had it right, it was a good day out. Just feel a little ripped off as did the Chippenham fans. It did say they would be playing Ipswich Town. But, for me, its nothing new. The club has never gone out of its way to consider the fans other than their pockets.

Judging by the “kicking” I have received it is obvious that fair play has given way to a win at any costs mentality.
Honesty in our dealings a thing of the past.
Ethics a concept no longer considered to be important.

And all supported by today's immoral supporters.

Ipswich a club with a proud and honest past renowned for fair play and honest dealing.
Now my once proud club is sinking, a victim of the win at all costs culture that infects modern day support.

RIP Those were the Days.

Bluetone - what a fool. These sort of matches - an XI from a bigger club - take place all over the place and by all professional clubs. I am sure Chippenham never expected anything like a team from Ipswich with any of our main players. The team put out represented Ipswich Town and the club met it's obligation.

Fifeblue - what an idiot the infant can't yet read. I have never suggested we should have sent a full first team only that we should have included one or two fringe players thus meeting the spirit of the obligation not just the least we could get away with. Come back when you've grown up.

Bluetone - I ALSO never suggested we should have sent a full first team. The team sent along was perfectly adequate.

Fifeblue it is difficult for me to explain principles and ethics to someone who has no concept of them. A couple of fringe players to whet the appetite and swell their attendance would have been the right and honourable thing to do. Not that I expect you to understand.

Bluetone, as far as I know, you are the only one talking about principles and ethics in relation to this match and the team that Ipswich put out. How do YOU know what the Chippenham club feel about it? Has there been any comment criticising Ipswich?

And how do YOU that I have no concept of principles and ethics ? You are a pompus ass.

You say that "couple of fringe players to whet the appetite and swell their attendance would have been the right and honourable thing to do." - Yes, I do understand the concept. But do you really imagine that the followers of Chippenham Town would have known ANY of our fringe players, let alone many of our first team, had they been there.

Chippenham Town were playing Ipswich Town, not Manchester United. Perhaps if we had a match against a similar club to us in the Championship, say Nottingham Forest, then you would know the difference between their fringe players and a young representative side? I doubt many of us would without doing some research first.

I really think you are making far too big an issue of this.
