McCarthy: One More to Go
Thursday, 25th Jul 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s only one player away from having assembled the squad he wants for the start of the season at Reading a week on Saturday. The Town manager has made nine additions so far in what’s been a productive first summer at Portman Road.

Speaking after the game at Colchester on Tuesday, McCarthy said: “That’s just about us except for one more, I think.”

Asked whether that player was a midfielder, the Blues boss wouldn’t be drawn: “I can’t tell you that!”

Another central midfielder would appear to be the area McCarthy is likely to be looking to strengthen — Manchester United youngster Ryan Tunnicliffe linked yesterday — with former loanee Guirane N’Daw having left the club at the end of last season.

Last Month, McCarthy revealed that he had talked to the Senegalese international’s representatives earlier in the summer, but there have been no further developments on that front.

“No, I spoke to his agent when he left and we’ve spoken to him since,” he said. “But there’s nothing further to report. Hopefully, when I get the one I want it’ll be done and you’ll find out.”

I really want to see more game time for Jack Marriot this season; a little disappointed he hasn't featured very much in pre season; I think RM would be a key signing this season and my ideal signing would be young talented Ryan Colclough from Crewe Alex. Otherwise this has been an amazing pre season for itfc (minus the ticket office issues) Get in Mick N Tez!

Must be a goal scorer as we look buggered if mcgoldrick gets injured.

I agree Bossman it seems funny that last season we were light all over the pitch except for up front and now there is competition for places except at centre forward.

I have all the trust in the world for Mick and Terry but if I'm honest I think we need two more players: a out and out goal scorer and an attacking midfielder. But other than them we have a squad built for promotion!

This has been an almost perfect pre-season and with martin, JET, and Chops all shown the door Mick continues to show what a class act he is. I hope Loach proves me wrong and continues this season as he ended last and I hope mcgoldrick takes his pre-season form and shows he can be that prolific goal scorer we are all hoped Chopra would be. If that final signing is another exciting goal scorer then I think we'll be set. Judging by the fact that there will be 2000 of us at Reading I would love to see the ckub do a ticket offer for the first game at Portman Road and see us pass the 25,000 mark for the first time in a while

Probably classic misdirection from McCarthy. Feel certain that he still has a couple of tricks up his sleeve.

Its got to be Billy Sharp. That would certainly be the final part in the puzzle. You can take a bit of a gamble with most positions. . . but goal scorers are a bit special.

I think if Chopra leaves, that may well open ME's wallet. One last big splash and then premier league here we come!!

I hope its Sam Baldock! He is still quite young and still knows where the goal is!

MM tends to be a bit cryptic. We need an attacking midfielder, that's obvious. Also if we sell someone, perhaps Chopra, we'll need a replacement.

I tell you what I like the most about this - considering how transfer windows under previous managers have either felt like making the best of a bad situation or a last minute panic when we realise our squad isn't good enough, this summer has felt totally different. When you listen to Mick, it sounds like he has everything under control. The squad is almost ready with over a week left before kickoff, the pre-season campaign has gone as well as we could have hoped, and everything just seems to be falling into place nicely.

Would be nice to have a talented but grounded striker like Billy, instead of my Ego is more importasnt than your club, Chopra.

Mcgoldrick and sharp up front and Taylor sitting just behind them ? I think that would cause a lot of problems for defenders

I personally would really like us to sign a centre mid, someone forward thinking .Also if possible I would try bring stearman in once the season has started aswell.

We look a a strong Blue machine now. I think priorities should be:

1. creative centre mid / quality playmaker to add another dimension and release our potential.

2. another striker

this would make us rather complete for the campaign.
