Town Closing in on Tenth Signing
Thursday, 25th Jul 2013 15:47

TWTD understands that the Blues are closing in on adding Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe to their squad on loan, taking Mick McCarthy’s total of summer additions to 10.

While the deal is not yet done, we understand Town are very much the frontrunners to land Tunnicliffe and he could be in the squad for the final pre-season friendly at Notts County on Saturday.

Brighton were previously reported to have made a loan approach for the 20-year-old, while other Championship clubs are also believed to be eyeing the England U16 and U17 international, who spent time on loan at Peterborough United during 2011/12 and at Barnsley last season

Heywood-born Tunnicliffe plays in central midfield, an area where the Blues would still appear to require cover. Speaking on Tuesday, Mick McCarthy said he was looking to add only one more player to his squad ahead of the start of the season at Reading a week on Saturday.

Tunnicliffe has made two sub appearances in the Capital One Cup for the Red Devils, in addition to 15 senior starts and 18 games from the bench for his loan sides.

In April, Blues boss Mick McCarthy confirmed that he would utilise the loan market to augment his squad.

Tunnicliffe played in United’s reserves’ 1-0 friendly victory over Club Brugge last week, a game which was watched by the Town manager.

Just wanted to be first on the message board!!

I know nothing about this guy, but if Mick & Tezza rate him. . . that's good enough for me.

So glad we're after these young promising players, unlike the likes of Lee Bowyer's and Ivar Ingimarsson's we were signing under Jewell. SUPER MICK MCCARTHY

There must be some right sneaky little traitor in the Ipswich ranks who keeps leaking all this information to Phil!

I'm sure I read somewhere that he'd been transfer listed at Man Utd, I can't remember where so I don't know if anyone else or Phillip knows about this. If so could it be with a view to a permanent deal?

Another midfield player. Will be interesting what the side for Reading will be.

Tunnicliffe is a very good player. Surely not coming here just to bench warm. Would have probably been able to join another club who could give him regular games.

Trust MM to make the right decisions and it is all adding up to a very very interesting season.

Only concern is if McGoldrick and or Murphy get injured we are a bit lightweight up front

Still roll on August 3

Hmm. Now I wonder whether this is really it for summer signings, or whether Mick was leading us a merry dance with his "one more to go" comments earlier... where running the club is concerned, I trust Mick completely. On this particular matter however, I'm tempted to think he might be fibbing. ;)

I have been watching Ryan Tunnicliffe on you-tube looks a good strong young player he has to be serious competition for Hyam which can only be a good thing

Interesting news. A decent player by all accounts, but presumably as others have said, not here to sit on the bench. Not a fan of loans, but accept we need one or two - most Championship clubs will.

No we need a more attacking player, I think he's a quality player and would love him to come to Town if it was permanent but what if he just comes in boots Hyam out the team and then goes back to Man U and signs for a different club or just stays there then we would be much worse of...

I just hate loan players after last season in MM I trust tho.

He is a proper box to box midfielder (ironically reminds me of Lee Bowyer in his prime) Have seen him play lots of times and think he would do really well here. Now that Chops has gone would still like to see one more striker ideally but this is the best feeling I've had for ages about a town side BRING ON THE PROMOTION PUSH!

Now chopra has gone i think we need 1 more striker. I can see mcgoldrick getting 15 goals or there abouts and he has been in decent form in pre season, as has murphy who should get at least 10 , nouble im still not convinced about and has a big season ahead. Excited to see what taylor can do. Would rather see an attack minded, creative midfielder. Anyway buzzing for start of the season. Got my reading away ticket coyb

Not a fan from what I've seen but very much an MM type of player. Do worry for Like Hyam though and would have preferred a permanent and more attacking player (kenny McLean / Henderson)..

Don't let him drive the team coach.

Makes sense. A young player with a good football up bringing at United so can't be bad. Anyone know if he's more of a defensive midfielder or attacking? Either way, welcome aboard the promotion push Ryan!

Does anyone know if he's a defensive midfielder or attacking?

Those that reckon Hyam will suffer from the competition need to remember how much he upped his game against competition last year. It should do them both good if they take it the right way.

Would rather see a striker instead of countless central midfielders. Nouble doesn't tick all the boxes for me and who knows what Taylor may do. Striker please MM.

"he looks a step above the rest at reserve level."

"he has the determination, passion and capabilities that every great united player had"

"He plays with a hard-working, aggressive style"

Just a few quotes from a few Man Utd forums and blogs. Seems impressive - some were comparing him to Keane (remember how he played, not how he managed us!). There was something about his passing being a bit dodgy at times but hard to find any other complaints.

Michael11 - he's more defensive.

I get it but loan players saved our skins last year. Regarding needing another striker, we're covered. We have better coverage, actual wingers AND considerably better management improving the strikers we already have.
