Berkane Keen to Play for Algeria
Friday, 26th Jul 2013 17:13

Academy second-year scholar Amir Berkane says he’d love to play international football for Algeria.

The midfielder was born in Colchester and brought up in Kelvedon but his family hail from Tipaza in the North African country.

Speaking in an interview with DZFoot, he says he’s not yet been contacted by the Algerian Football Federation about playing for them at any level, but would certainly be interested in representing them: “Yes, definitely.”

The 17-year-old says he has followed the fortunes of Algeria at recent tournaments: “I watched them play at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Berkane has featured for the Blues first team regularly throughout pre-season and has been handed squad number 33 for the campaign ahead. Town have never had a player capped at any level by Algeria.

Here's a quiz question. If he plays for Algeria, would that be just the third African country a current Town player has represented at any one time? I can think of Finidi George of Nigeria and possibly Drissa Diallo of Mauritania?

N'Daw and Sonko represented Senegal, just to think of another two off the top of my head.

Cheers, you're right re Kelvedon, I remember someone telling me that when he joined the academy. Was going by what he said in the piece. Amended.
