Carson at Bristol City
Monday, 29th Jul 2013 16:31

Midfielder Josh Carson is on trial with League One Bristol City, TWTD understands. On Saturday, manager Mick McCarthy revealed that the 20-year-old Northern Irish international would be spending time at another club this week but kept their identity under wraps.

Carson, who has a year left on his Town contract, could play for the Robins' U21s in a pre-season friendly at Weston-Super-Mare this evening in which ex-Blues loanee Marlon Harewood is also set to take part.

The academy product failed to make an appearance for the Blues after McCarthy took over as boss last November and spent time on loan at York City before suffering a foot injury towards the end of the season.

Coincidentally, Carson scored probably his best goal for Town against Bristol City at Ashton Gate in April 2011 as a 10-man Blues side ran out 1-0 winners.

This summer has seen a number of players move between Town and the Robins. Cole Skuse and Dean Gerken have joined the Blues on Bosman free transfers, while Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Paul Anderson were involved in a swap deal.

Meanwhile, Town have announced that new loan signing Ryan Tunnicliffe will wear the number 16 shirt.

Another promising youngster who didn't work out at ITFC, which is a shame as there was a time Carson was in same the team as Wickham and outshone the striker. I then read he returned the following season looking rather unfit and after that he was poor.

Best of luck to him.

Is it just me or has the club been building up a bit of a link with Bristol City this summer? First Cole Skuse comes in, then the JET-Anderson swap deal, and now this.

Still remember that goal Carson scored at Bristol City, nice strike it was too. Wasn't that a couple of weeks after he'd notched a brace against Palace, if I remember rightly?

His best game was definitely the Crystal Palace home game, scored 2 goals including a brace to give us the 2-1 victory.

Good point, TractorCam - had a feeling there was another one I'd forgotten about!

Could be a sensible move for Carson. He still has time to develop his potential but, with our recent signings, he was unlikely to see any/much senior action this season. Good luck to him if the deal goes through. Rather like JET really - there is probably something more to come; but Portman Road under Mick McCarthy is not the place for players to jog along whilst they wait for something to happen. I have not looked forward to a season with such anticipation for years and years.

Good luck to him, but secretly I want Bristol to reject him. Would rather he went out on loan to get some playing time, but remained an ITFC player

It certainly feels like the Clifton Suspension bridge links Bristol and Ipswich directly at the moment doesnt it?!

I always liked Carson but as Mark says above something certainly changed over one summer and he never really returned to those heights. Never really seemed to believe in himself enough to get a good enough end product for me. He often made it somewhere and then lacked the conviction to put in that one great cross that would win us a game.

Good luck to him though, if he does move on. Maybe a year or two in a starting XI could give him some belief and hopefully allow him to reach that next level.

Good Luck Josh.

Hope they take him on loan or buy him for a fee that could be re-invested in another winger :)

A move will be good for young Josh - his career has dipped and therefore a change may do him good.

I'm glad he's going just so I don't have to see the flash idiot in those dreadful suits every night in town

Whilst I sincerely doubt it, I really wish this was a season-long loan with him having a contract extension here. He is still so young and I really believe he can still carve a career out here. A year in League One will do him the world of good.

i'd loan josh out to a team where he is going to get selected to play. he was doing ok and progressed well in his little run in our first team.i think we should at least give this guy a chance to prove his worth, though it's clear he would'nt get the chance the way our squad is shaping up,we've taken enough players on loan on the preface that they would play, why cant we demand the same for josh.dont forget he has won international call up's. i say lets see if he can produce in say league one then make a decision.

Good going forward on occasions but lacked an all round game. Players have to be ball winners as well as giving 110% to play in
MM's team

He can find himself quite lucky to be given this opportunity if you ask me. He has done little if nothing the past two years and to be given a shot at quite a big club who have the potential to go up is something he should be grateful for. Some of our other lads haven't been given this shot and now find themselves in the lower leagues. Knuckle down and fulfil the potential you had for heavans sake.

Never could understand the fuss this bloke attracted by alot on here. League 1 is his level at best. look at our other youngsters who have been released and where they are playing. He is very lucky to be playing at what should be a promotion challenging y team in league 1

Cheers guys again. Impressed with JET, might have a gem on our hands for league one. Seen some good deals between our two clubs, I like the Suspension bridge ideal, lol, Can we be your feeder club?
Ahh It wont be for long, hopefully SOD and JET and maybe this guy Carson too can take us up. We are a nice club, good staff and facilitys for youngsters to progress. Our best product of the academy is your very own Colay Skusay! He is a great guy, unbelievably professional, really nice, has a great engine, hardworking with very good pace for a central midfielder, I always though of him as our very Own Patrick Vieira =) and can sit and protect the defence well.
Gerkin on his day is unstoppable, he saved us from relly once, but James stepped in and he was shut out, great keeper you have I think.
Never saw much of Anderson, but City fans were not happy to see him go, he would have destroyed league 1 apparently and is more than capable at Champ level.

I wish all of the X City ladds well, expecially Cole who was a fans favorite, watch out for the occasional piledriver from 35 yrds, when i say occasional i mean every 4 years, don't expect many goals from him, but he will give the guys infront of him protection and will keep the ball moving, he will harras and tackle and move.

I will miss Cole *crys* take care of him

Good luck in your season, MM will have you guys up there pushing, I will be keeping an eye on you guys.

Cheers, fellow recipient of farmer joke on away days.

Never really done it 4 me unfortunately...Bristol city is a very good club for Carson to get a shot at playing for. I don't think he's cut out to be a championship player..(yet)...still alot of learning to do...I wish him all the best if he gets this shot...

I was at the Palace game and it was pretty much all that I saw of Carson apart from a ROI v NI game. His performance and his brace led me to believe he was a gem of a player but it seems not unfortunately. Hope he does well at Bristol but no TOO well!

@ciderbcfc - Hope our clubs meet up again soon, Bristol was the closest game for several of us exiles in the West Country. Very nice pint of No. 7 in the Tobacco Factory, too. Best wishes for the coming season.

5th in the pecking order behind a 34 year old, a left sided player, a right back and an 18 year old!!
If that doesn't burst your bubble nothing will!!

On another note, I NEED A TICKET FOR READING!!
Anyone know anyone who's selling one? Anyone know if Reading are going to bump up our allocation!?

carsey added 18:48 - Jul 29
ciderbcfc thanks for the good wishes hopefully you too will have a great season. Have to say I for one won't miss JET as he never really showed the desire when we were up against it. Josh Carson shows great effort but never seemed to nail down a place with any of the managers we have had in recent years. If Cole Skuse is half as good as you suggest I will be pleased.
All the best.

Think this will send a good message out to the rest of the younger players - keep up the hard work, try to improve or you'll be out of the door

@Keaneish. No more Reading Tickets will become available unfortunately...we sold our first allocation of 1500, then they gave us 500 more which fills there away end. You might get in the Home end haha but don't cheer too loud when we go 3-0 up...u might get lynched!! Haha ;-) positive thinking...
