Left-back Aaron Cresswell and midfielders Luke Hyam and Anthony Wordsworth are doubts ahead of Saturday’s season opener at Reading. Cresswell’s probable deputy Tyrone Mings is also not 100 per cent as the Blues prepare for the trip to the Madejski Stadium.

Cresswell has been suffering with a thigh problem throughout pre-season and was forced off early in last week’s 3-3 draw at Notts County.

Manager Mick McCarthy says the former Tranmere man will be assessed on Friday: “He is a concern, he’s a doubt.

“We’ll have a look tomorrow, but he is doubtful, there is no question about that because he started on Saturday at Notts County and he looked great for 10 minutes and then just pulled up.

“If he has to miss a game and be ready for the next 45 then that’ll be fine. The real issue with Cressy is because he’s started to feel something.

"He played every minute of every game last year and I guess there’s a sense of personal pride there, wanting to start. We’ll see, if he’s fit he’ll play, but he’s doubtful.”

The Blues boss says he would have no concerns about giving Tyrone Mings, who made his debut on the final day of last season at Burnley, another start: “I’ve no worries about that.

“My only worry about him is that he came in with tonsillitis and mouth ulcers today, although he feels OK in himself, he’s not feeling run down or tired or out of kilter too much.

“That’s still a concern, but I’m sure he’ll be fit and I’ve got no worries about Ty at all, I thought he was terrific against Burnley.”

Anthony Wordsworth was subbed within a minute or so of coming on at Notts County due to a calf strain and the ex-Colchester man will also be looked at on Friday, as will another central midfielder: “Woody’s a doubt, Luke Hyam had a problem with his groin and he didn’t train today. We’ll have to wait and see until tomorrow to wait for him.

“Frank Nouble hadn’t trained but trained today, so at least we’ve got one back. So, there are a few that we’re worried about but if they’re not fit, we’ll play somebody else. That’s all we can do.”

Seasider added 15:41 - Aug 1 Apart from 3 long term injuries,last season especially after Mick took over,we were lucky with niggling injuries.Have got Elliot Hewitt and Paul Taylor back;but Wordy had time off with injuries at Col U,and looks as though he could turn out to be Towns current sicknote,most teams have one.Hope I am wrong though. Andy Liddell should take some of the credit for keeping team fit,as believe stats show ITFC to be one of fittest in Division.

I'd also say well managed and motivated players (in all sports) seem to have less of these injuries - almost psycholgical in some way - so the happy feeling in the squad probably helps. Mucclestonjoe - Probably too much for October. May be put him on the bench. If Mings was unavailable i'd expect either Smith to move across and Berra to come in or both Veseli and Hewitt to play, one at left back.

It's better to say a player known to have been injured is a doubt rather than confirming that he has recovered and is likely to play. Having said that, I think it's unlikely that all three will be fit for Saturday.

Smith played there for New Zealand so it is not a strange position for him I would go with something like: Loach, Veseli, Chambers, Berra, Smith (if both are out) Anderson, Tunnicliffe, Skuse, Tabb Murphy, McGoldrick Subs: Gerken, Hewitt, Taylor, Edwards, October, Nouble, Marriott Need to stop this rubbish about Edwards being an automatic pick on the team sheet. I'm also excited to see Tunnicliffe play, haven't seen much of his but seems like a young roy keane.

I think there is a feel good factor with most of the "supporters " being optimistic about the forthcoming season and for the doubters lets hope that they are proved wrong. And by the way, Ipswich is not a back water when it comes to football. Something I read earlier today. COYB!

siebdykstra added 19:40 - Aug 1 Cressy played every game last season, it'll take a lot to keep him out. I reckon this is all to keep others guessing! If, however, this is true I'd consider Veseli and Hewitt as the full backs (Veseli on the left) with the obvious partnership of Smith and Chambers in the centre. Berra on the bench if anything seems wrong at half time with Tommy moving over. I'm more concerned about Luke Hyam missing out. I reckon this is his season. If he continues to improve under Mick and Terry as he has done he may well be watched by some Premier League sides. If he stays fit for 90% of the season we'll be very close to the top six, and probably better if McGoldrick gets some goals. Top eight is decent, but from the build up to the season and the signings Mick has made I reckon top six is a very possible outcome! Thank God for Mick!
