Loach: Town Goals Will Come
Thursday, 22nd Aug 2013 06:01

Goalkeeper Scott Loach has a message for supporters concerned that Town’s lack of goals in the Championship last season will again prove a problem in the months ahead.

Loach, 25, said: “We’re just three games in. After 13 games last season we only had seven points then later on at one point people were saying ‘Hang on a minute, we could still get in the play-offs’.

“It’s still early days yet — very, very early days. We beat Millwall 3-0 and, okay, there were two own goals but we had to get into the positions to get them. But for some good saves from Bywater and Robert Green at the weekend we’d have even more goals.

“I train with David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy every day and I know they’ve got it in them.

"People have got to realise that on a Saturday it doesn’t always fall to them how they want and there is also a bit of pressure. But the goals will come and I’ve got no worries about that whatsoever.”

I have no doubt that Murph & McGoldy are capable of finishing, I just feel we need to have an attacking CM, Skuse is happy to sit back and allow the game in front of him, Hyam must attack more or risk losing his spot to Wardy, who is more than capable at knocking a few in.

I can see Tunnicliffe taking Hyam's place. Which is not ideal as he will never be our player.

ArnieM :- I seem to remember when Tunnicliffe signed and was asked the question about staying longer than the season, his answer was, " I don't see any reason why not, we'll have to see how it goes". Could we afford him at the end of the season, I don't know, even if he did want to stay.

@DiamondGezzer - I think you will find that quote from Tunnicliffe was made in relationship to him perhaps extending his loan to the end of the season - his current loan period is only up to the end of year not a full season loan.

We play two holders in centre mid. This allows the front four to do the business up top. Or should do.

For years our team was missing a 'holding MF'; now we have two, and our game looks much more solid and dependable. I personally cannot see Luke Hyam stretching his game to become a 'box to box' player like John Wark. He may pop up with the odd goal or two but I cannot see him as being a regular scorer and in my view he should be concentrating on being a better 'holding MF' than Cole Skuse as ultimately we may not be able to accommodate two such players.

I believe that the 'box to box' role is better suited to a player like Carlos Edwards who has the experience, skill on the ball, and the general fitness to fulfil the role. I know he currently has to protect the relatively inexperienced Hewitt but I believe he has goals in him, as he showed at the end of last season.

With 2 holding midfielders you need a flair player out wide of behind the front man , personally as stated before I think this would have been ideal for JET .
We seem to be relying heavily on service from our full backs ,if they are penned back we lack any forward drive

Every loan player says that they cant see why they cant stay at a club longer.

i'll probably get a load of minuses for this, but i think the ideal formation to play, would be a 4-2-2-2, with two holding midfielders, two wingers and then the two boys up top. this is because skuse and hyam are both defensive players, hyam is not an attacking player, and i think if we play him in a forward role, his performances will dip, and he just isn't an attacking player - he is a bloody good defensive player. that leaves two wingers out wide, in tabby and edwards, who i think could possibly be replaced in january, leaving up mc'goal'drick and murphs up top.

COYB!

Taylor I think you will find that in footballing terms what you suggest is 442 pretty much what has lined up for the first three games of the season!

Sorry Loachy but we'll be suffering again all season with the current strikeforce.........McGoldrick and Murphy are totally ineffective, Taylor offers some promise but is a way off firing on all cylinders and even then he'll need a capable partner.

Training and league games are very very different animals indeed.

I know it's hard facing up to reality as it destroys any false hope you have but we couldn't score goals last season & with all the additions to the squad the only difference to the team now from last season is Hewitt & Skuse.
So what makes anyone think it's going to change this season?
At least we will still be a hard team to beat though !!!

Re the comments about playing two holding midfielders, Hyam's not really playing that role this year, he's more adventurous than that.

Phil,

LH is best as a MF holding player. He is not a box to box player like John Wark. Nobody should try to mould him as such. His performances during this season have been pretty average so far. In my view his place in the team is hanging by a thread because we cannot really afford to play with two deep sitting MFs. LH is the one being encouraged to break forward but this is clearly taking him out of his comfort zone.

He might yet develop into, and be more comfortable in, a more forward role. But all I was saying previously was that he needed to cement his place in the team before trying to expand his game. At present we are playing two MF holding players. Ultimately we will need only one.

He's not been sitting deep though, he's been getting further forward. Both the last two managers have felt he's got more to his game than just sitting.

Whether he'll fulfil that potential remains to be seen, but my point was that we're not playing with two players sitting in the manner that, say, Ireland do and has been suggested in other posts.

Hyam is a little gem and though I doubt he´ll ever be a Wark type of player he has (imo) more to his game than just sitting in midfielkd as a holding player.
With Skouse in the first eleven we dont really need the two, I´d like to see Haym chancing his arm now and again with the wingers supporting the front two. That should be enough bodies in and around the goal to score goals for us.

I take your point but my view is that he is a lesser talent for it. As I have said LH may well develop into a rounded MF player but currently I believe his attributes are best used in a holding role. MM clearly feels he deserves a place in the team at the moment; all I'm saying is that LH may well be sacrificed if, and when, we adopt a more expansive game.

Playing JET behind the front two would have added creativity and flair to our attacks but since we don't have him any more we need to find an alternative. Perhaps not to play directly behind the strikers in a diamond or 4-1-2-1-2 formation but someone who has more attacking instinct like Wordsworth who was an effective goal scoring midfielder for Colchester. Also, he's been said to be a bit of a set-piece specialist so if he plays we could get more goals from free kicks as we don't have too many players who can consistently make great deliveries from a dead ball (Cresswell is one of them but someone with a right foot would be good as well).
