Premier Quartet Eye Cresswell
Tuesday, 27th Aug 2013 09:10

Aston Villa, Newcastle, Cardiff and West Ham are the latest clubs reported to be eyeing Blues left-back Aaron Cresswell. All four Premier League clubs were amongst those to have sent scouts to Portman Road for Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds.

The 23-year-old has also recently been linked with Crystal Palace and Everton, while Southampton, Fulham, Wigan and Blackburn have previously been mentioned as interested parties this summer.

Villa are long-term admirers of the former Tranmere man with his representatives SEM recently confirming that they made firm bids for the Liverpudlian in the summer of 2012. The transfer window closes at 11pm next Monday.

Speaking over the weekend, Blues boss Mick McCarthy said he had received no firm interest in Cresswell: “We’ve never had a bid, never had a bid at all. Nothing at all, zero, zilch, zippo, diddly squat. Not spoken to anybody about him.”

After our start I fancy Cressy might be going ,not great but may free up some cash for MM to spend

Mick seems to be trying to drum up interest in cresswell and I'm thinking that he has possibly been promised all of or at least some of the funds to strengthen the squad. that's the only feasible reason that he would continue talking cressie up and saying he isn't scared of loosing him. if he valued him that much he would say he's not for sale, end of. lets hope our faceless owner doesn't pocket all the money like he did with the wickham sale!!! didn't exactly go on strengthening the squad did it?!

If we got between 3 and 4 million then I would take it ,if that meant bringing in a couple of stella wingers and a pacy striker

I actually just wish we'd now sell him , and use the money to build a stronger side here. This speculation will only get worse and if he doesnt go before the end of the window , it will start up all over again in Januray . In the meantime Cresswell's from will dip because of the speculation.

jimmy 86. I think you'll find Jewell used a lot of the Wickham money to pay the high wages of players such as Bullard, Bowyer Chopra.

I think this was planned months ago, no transfer kitty for Big Mick to strengthen the squad over the summer. Build up Cresswell's reputation just before the last week of the window, cash in and get 2 or 3 players in before the window shuts.

retro I guess you're right but really we should have used that time and money to strengthen the squad properly, what with FFP in play nowadays. even last year we spent minimal money and the FFP excuse was used even though it hadn't really come into play at that point.

remember that Tranmere get a large % of the fee people

Seems to me we are being reminded professional football is not a game, is not a sport just another grubby business.

I agree that we should sell if we receive an offer deemed to be great enough, but with Tranmere getting 20% I'd hope that we would hold out for about 5 million. We shouldn't be under pressure to sell, and I don't think we would be able to strengthen the squad enough before the transfer window closes to justify selling him.
Cresswell always seems to be involved with our build up play and I think we would really miss him going forward, in a team that is already finding goals hard to come by.

The reason Mick didn't have a decent budget was because it was wasted by Keane and Jewell on players who didn't turn out to be great and also on the big wages. I know it's painful to bring this up but we would have had more if Keane hadn't let Rhodes go for peanuts.

Typical Ipswich though (for the last few seasons), we get a young player who becomes one of our stars and while he's here the club just sits about in mid-table. Because of this he decides to leave, we get decent money, it gets spent on disappointment, and we're back to square one.

If Cresswell does go (for at least £4 million in my opinion) then I don't think we should buy another left back. Instead, go to 3 at the back (Smith, Chambers, Berra) and invest on some dangerous, pacy wingers who will run up and down the pitch (but with more end product than Lee Martin!) and a goalscorer upfront. Billy Sharp springs to mind but will he be prolific for us? Chopra was a prolific championship striker before coming to us so we can't be sure. We've always got Mings as a left back if we revert to four at the back to keep us (sort of) unpredictable.

Unfortunately, previous managers took big risks with big money, and lost out.

As much as I love Cressy, I think it may be a good idea to cash in on him now as we blatantly need to spend some money on good players. I think Tranmere get 20% of the profit don't they? If we can get £4m-£5m for him then we can use the money to sign Henderson, Stearman, a replacement left back and a good young striker. Someone like Nakhi Wells at Bradford is what we're lacking. Young, fast, and a proper goal scorer.

apparently QPR have bid £3 million for Nakhi wells... how are we supposed to compete with their spending power? :(

HANDS OFF OUR CRESSY

ntoms97 added 10:10 - Aug 27
If he goes we'll need a replacement for him so 6 mil I wouldn't take any below that we will need a new LB as I don't think Mings is ready and a new striker and a winger with Mick's business we can tie that up in about 3 million at most but I rate Cressy 6 million or go home

@StuartBrett9

Have they?! That's ridiculous. He's a good player but i don't see how he's worth £3m yet. Qpr are doing my head in, where is this financial fair play? They already have Charlie Austin, Zamora, Johnson who cost millions and must be on a fortune every week. You wouldn't mind if they had the attendances to get the money but we've been crap for 5 years and still have more fans come and watch us every week. The FA needs to sort the parachute payments out so it's a level playing field.

@Micheal11 according to Talksport... depends how reliable they are ;)

StuartBrett9 - yes, if true then another brilliant example of Financial "Fair" Play going down the drain!

im starting to lean towards selling Aaron now to be honest
agree with some posts here if we do get an offer of say 3 mill
and we can get say 3 players stearman, a striker etc then this could be worth doing here
lets see what happens but i think bids are prob gonna be put on the table by window day

Michael11, QPR have 4 years worth of parachute payments that count toward their financial fair play totals, that is where the scheme falls down. I would also guess QPR are going above their limit gambling on getting promotion before copping any sanctions for failing to comply with the rules.
I would laugh my a### off if they fail!
As for Cresswell, Mick is NOT talking him up leaving, just answering journalists questions. Would've a lot worse if he said no comment

On the subject of spending the Wickham fee, as well as high wages on players that didn't work out fees were spent on Chopra, JET and Cresswell all at that time. Only one of those seems to have provided value for money.

I think the Wickham money was re-invested in the club and some. Anyone who thinks ME has made money out of this club would need to take a lot of effort to convince me.

jas0999 added 11:25 - Aug 27
ME has in fairness spent a lot of money on players - particularly during RK and PJ's time at the club. Even JM spent on players. Sadly, the wrong managers were backed. I would have hoped that if Cresswell was sold, the money would be reinvested, as we need a striker, creative midfielder and a GK (my opinion) - not withstanding a replacement for Cresswell. But I doubt it will be. The Summer 'spending' demonstrates that.

Nthsuffolkblue added 11:31 - Aug 27
jas doesn't the summer spending show we are trying to live within our means and not throw money at competing with the QPRs etc. (which FFP would prevent anyway)? There is no reason to suppose that any fee received would not be made available but it does not mean any further money is available for wages beyond this season. The £2.25M we would receive from a £3M cash sale would not go anywhere near as far as some fans seem to think.

@HennersITFC

I agree with you that we should play 3 at the back with Smith, Chambers and Berra, but I don't think we could play pacy wingers, we would need Hewitt or Edwards and Cresswell or others as wing backs. Unless you mean we go like Hull and Watford, I believe they used a winger on at least one side of a 3-5-2 system.
I hope this is the formation that Mick would use, after hinting at a formation change, rather than 1 up front or something like that.

Just can,t see any of this happening, to sell Cressie and bring in more players in under a week? nope just is not gonna happen, there is just not enough time.
A massive reality check is in order her!
