Smith and New Zealand Win
Thursday, 5th Sep 2013 21:47

Tommy Smith played the full 90 minutes for New Zealand as they beat hosts Saudi Arabia 1-0 in their opening game at the OSN Cup in Riyadh this evening. Veteran striker Chris Killen scored the only goal 13 minutes from time.

Smith was winning his 23rd full cap for the All Whites, who now face the UAE, who beat Trinidad and Tobago 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in today’s other game, in the tournament’s final on Monday. You can see highlights of the the game here.

The centre-half is one of two members of Town’s senior squad currently away on international duty with right-back Elliott Hewitt in action for the Wales U21s against San Marino in a Euro 2015 qualifier in Serravalle on Friday evening.

Hewitt, who has previously won seven U21 caps, and the rest of the Welsh youngsters then take on Moldova in another qualifier on Tuesday.

I find the so called international breaks so bloody boring. Half the players pull ut with suddenly acquired injuries - its makes a mockery of the whole thing,

Well done Tommy. Now get on a flight home, rest up and get ready for another clean sheet against Middlesbrough. With regards to international duty, I think it's great for our players to represent their country, just not for meaningless friendlies half way around the world.

Tommy got a kick to the head at one point. His opponent was sent away for an ex-ray.
