McCarthy: Another Deserved Win
Tuesday, 17th Sep 2013 22:36

Boss Mick McCarthy felt his side deserved their 2-1 home victory over Yeovil despite being disappointed with aspects of their first half performance.

“I thought we should have been in front when we conceded,” the Town boss said.

“It was a disappointment having had most of the play and most of the good play up to their box, but we just weren’t good enough to create a chance or to get on the end of something.

“And it’s sod’s law that you have most of the play and then somebody I spoke to in the summer [Joel Grant] steps up and scores. It generally happens to me, that.”

There were muted boos as his side left the field at the break, which McCarthy said he could understand to some extent: “We got the bird going off and I think we deserved it for our performance, for not being good enough to be in front.

“But I think it was a bit because it was Yeovil and I sat in here on Saturday and everybody’s going ‘It’s Yeovil, you should win’, that’s rubbish that and I told you that. And the lads have just said that that was harder than Middlesbrough.

“And the reason it’s harder is because we have more forward play and more attacks and if we give it away it’s suddenly straight back on top of us. It was an end to end game at times.

“So, I don’t mind getting the bird for not being good enough to be in front when we should have been, but I hope it’s not because anybody thinks that they’re beneath our dignity because that’s nonsense.

“We’re not that good that we think we’re just going to roll teams over. We’re not that good as a team or a club that we can just think we can roll teams over. You’ve got to earn every single point.”

The Town boss says Yeovil are far from an easy touch: “They’d won one, drawn one and lost one and they’re better away from home. I think there’s no pressure and I think they’ve got some nice, tidy footballers and they created a couple of chances as well, to be fair.”

He says he outlined to the players what he was unhappy with during the break: “I was livid at our inability to make the final pass.

“We were trying to score too quickly, were putting crosses in from bad positions and getting blocked and they were breaking on us. We didn’t do enough of the quality stuff to be in front, and I just pointed that out.”

McCarthy says they improved with the build-up to Aaron Cresswell’s goal an example: “Just before half-time we had a really good chance that Chambo maybe could have chested down and took in and that came because we kept playing rather than trying to cross the ball from rubbish areas.

“Cressy’s came because somebody was going to have shot, then Didsy was going to shoot, it came back, we worked it and we ended up getting our reward.”

The Blues manager was again pleased with central defender Christophe Berra: “To get him on a free transfer is bonkers really. We were very, very fortunate. But, you know what? Maybe he’s fortunate to come here, he’s enjoying it.

“From signing him from Hearts [at Wolves] he’s just been a good player for me and he’s doing the same again.”

McCarthy says he’ll look at the weekend game at Wigan in a day or so: “We’re going to one of the favourites on Sunday now. We can only take care of our job tonight, which we’ve done, and I’ll worry about that come the end of the week.”

Yeovil manager Gary Johnson kept his men in their dressing room for 45 minutes after the game.

"I needed to go through a few things with the boys," he explained. "We lacked the energy and competitiveness in the second half.

"We have to play the game more vigorously. We gave Ipswich time and room and you can't do that at this level. You have to be more clever.

"We did enough in the first half to be 1-0 up, but we were a little disorganised after the restart.

"We allowed Ipswich's experienced strikers to hold the ball up and their experienced full-backs to get forward. We didn't do enough in the final third."

I think we probably did deserve the three points but it wasn't a classic was it. My turn to be stupid...Is the game v. Wigan on TV on Sunday?

How pleasant it is to have a manager who tells it how it really is. Keep up the good work Mick.

Great win again tonight, we had plenty of chances to take the lead but its nice to see that under Mick we are able to recover from going a goal down. That is key, obviously we don't wanna have to keep making comebacks but it is nice to see we can do it. Also Wigan game ain't on TV but i think you might be able to find a link for it some were ?

We certainly made hard work of it by going behind and then having to defend right at the end, but I'm delighted to have enjoyed two comebacks in a week to take us into the top half of the table. Berra and Cresswell did particularly well, although I would like to see more from Skuse and I am unconvinced by Chambers at right-back (not his fault, as he's a centre back really).

Great to hear from our Mick. The first manager in a long time who knows exactly what's going on and is not afraid to tell it like it really is. An important win early in the season and a big game on Sunday to test the team on a number of levels. Trying not to get too excited at the moment, but we are now solid and there is talent in the squad.

Why do people worry about chambers at right-back? He played there loads for forest.

delighted for Murphy ,remember him walking round the pitch with his kids at the end of last season ,hes been a real servant to the club. I respect him and wish he scored in every game. A lot of what he does is thankless. But he is a cog in the wheel of great importance

Personally I was disappointed with our performance tonight, but enjoying our ability to win games when we're not playing well.

Pluses include Cresswell - lovely finish, Tunnicliffe, Berra, and Gerken.

McGoldrick didn't hit the same heights as Saturday, but still made things happen and generally played ok.

On the interesting subject of Murphy, I thought he was pretty mixed. Some people thought he was awesome tonight and some thought he was awful. Funny how people can see it so differently. He's an odd one, he can do things so well, then 5 minutes later he will fail completely to accomplish the same feat. He's not a natural finisher/goal scorer, should have at least done better than he did with that chance first half, took too long. Ultimately though he did get a goal, scrappy as it was, so I don't you can complain too much.

Chambers & Murphy:
As a right back, Chambers offers more defensively than Hewitt & I think we needed that. I agree with Mick in that he is more like what Stearman was for us last season. I feel a bit sorry for him though as he is a centre half & had a great partnership with Tommy Smith, and has been moved through no fault of his own. I like Berra & you can't argue with his inclusion in the first XI, but it is odd that when he came into the side first, Tommy was moved to left back to accommodate him. As I say, he has done very well for us, but I am surprised at how quickly Muck was prepared to break up the very successful Chambers/Smith partnership.
Like another postet noticed yesterday, Stearman hasn't played the last few games for Wolves, I wonder is there a financial/bonus reason for that & maybe he is a good loan option now, with his contract expiring next summer? Quality player to get, although it would be hard to fit him, drop Chambers or start him on the bench.
As for Hewitt, I would look at playing him right wing at the moment; Edwards & Anderson haven't exactly nailed down a spot in the team.
Murphy is a good player & I am certainly in the glad we signed him camp. After McGoldrick he is definitely our best option up front. I am still hoping Taylor will come good & that Mick will play him behind Didsy, but for whatever reason he is not ready for that just now. I have seen nothing from Nouble to make me think that he is going to be anything other that a 'throw him on second half & see if we can sneak a goal somehow in the chaos that he brings with his physical presence' option. Not good enough for me. The idea that se might turn down an opportunity to sign Matty Fryatt, regardless of how realistic it may be, because we have options such as Noubke & Lee is madness in my opinion. I don't know the personality of Fryatt, but his footballing qualities are exactly what we have been lacking & some of us have been crying out for all summer. It's not about getting a 20 goals a season man per se, it's about finding a workable partner up front for McGoldrick, someone who will be there first to slot home a rebound when the keeper spills a stinging strike or pick up a clever touch etc. A finisher in other words. That type of player would work well alongside Murphy, Lee or even on knock downs from Nouble too and we would certainly need that should anything happen to McGoldrick.
This 20 man squad business is not strong enough to make us even contemplate being in the top 6, we need to make it 22 with the right 2 emergency loans.

while listening on line to the Town match I was also half watching Man U. both Rooney and VanP missed sitters butboth also scored crackers. many "top strikers" miss a hatfull so we must keep creating and encourage shooting. goals will come as confidence in front of goal rises.

keep cheering the boys!!!
