McGoldrick's Form No Surprise
Friday, 20th Sep 2013 06:00

David McGoldrick’s impressive displays for Town this season have not surprised fellow new boy Paul Anderson after the pair were team-mates at Nottingham Forest.

While winger Anderson only checked in at Portman Road this summer, striker McGoldrick had the advantage of a 14-game loan spell last term that saw him net four times.

This season the man they call Didsy has claimed three goals in seven games, which puts him on track to become the elusive 20-goals-per-season ace that all teams covet.

Anderson said: “Didsy is brilliant. He was very good at Forest and they paid a lot of money for him. He just didn’t quite get the opportunities he probably deserved and I can see he’s come on in leaps and bounds here.

“To be honest he’s pretty much the full package from what I’ve seen. His workrate has been fantastic and that was something that was always questioned in the past, although I could never see that.

“Now he’s putting in the goals as well, which is what he gets paid for I suppose. He’s been fantastic and it’s great to be playing with him again. He could definitely play at a higher level.

“I think that’s true of the whole squad. A lot of the lads have played in the Premier League before. The individuals are very good here but it’s as a team that it comes together. Everyone is prepared to work hard for each other, which is a key factor for our success.”

But while back-to-back home wins over Middlesbrough and Yeovil have pushed the Blues up the table, Anderson believes it is still far too early in the campaign to say which teams are going to occupy the sought-after top six places.

He added: “It’s a long season and even the teams at the bottom like Bolton, who haven’t had a great start, you would expect them to there or thereabouts at the end.

“There’s a long way to go and our main aim will be to steer as far away as we can from where we were last season and if we get anywhere near the play-offs it will be a great achievement.

“At Christmas time you are halfway through the season and you are getting a feel for where clubs are probably going to be at the end. Then the transfer window comes into play and the teams with a lot of money will go and spend it, which might mean others getting left behind a little bit.

“Unfortunately that’s just the way football is. But if you’re there or thereabouts, which I’m hoping we will be, it would be good to push on from there in the second half of the season.”

I'm not surprised by his form either, given the promise he showed in his loan spell last year.

What I am a little surprised about, is that at 25, Town only offered him a two year contract when three year, or at least two years with a further one year option, have been given to other players in the past year. If he continues in his current form, we we all hope he does, I unfortunately see other clubs making a move later in the year, so the Club needs to be ready to tie down the player on a longer deal to afford us some financial protection, as none of us want a return to the very damaging "policy" of allowing key players running down thier contract and leaving on a free.

Neither was I. 17 goals in half a season at Cov is no easy thing even if they were league one

I believe McGoldrick to be one of 7 players capable of getting us into the top 6 come May. Our defence (Chambers, Smith, Berra, Cresswell), Tunnicliffe and Skuse making up the 7. The likes of Hyam, Murphy and Anderson always put in a shift and definitely make us more compact. The latter could prove to be a very good signing, he just needs games. I wonder whether we would could keep this defensive shape but add more creativity by making one simple signing? Ebanks Blake is available on a free and scored 15 goals in a relegated team last season (50 goals over two Championship seasons previously). His pace, power and goals would make us more threatening than with Murphy or Nouble up front and allow McGoldrick to drop deep and use his creative skills more frequently, while still offering a goal threat.

Think he's the best striker we've had in a very long time in my opinion. He can hold the ball up, be a poacher and strike a ball from 30 yards.

The McGoldrick signing is the best for many years, to get a 25-year-old with such ability and a good goalscoring record for free was superb.

I too wonder why the contract was so short, as next summer he will either need to sign a new deal or be sold. I think ITFC should get him to sign a new deal sooner rather than later.

I was pleased to get 66/1 on him (each-way) being top Championship goalscorer this season, and I note he is now 33/1. :-)

Quality, quality player.

All the more baffling that, almost to a man, Forest fans were glad to see the back of him. Their loss is our gain

Hes confident and playing well, long may it continue. Lets just wait and see if he can be our 20+ a season striker, certainly hope so.
