McCarthy: TC's Work Paying Off
Monday, 30th Sep 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy believes David McGoldrick’s excellent second goal during Town’s 2-0 home victory over Brighton was a result of the striker’s hard work on the training field with assistant manager Terry Connor.

McGoldrick has started the season impressively, netting five league goals in Town's first nine games, although is so far yet to score away from home.

McCarthy said he could see where the second goal had come from: “That’s his work with TC. He’s come to a place where he knows he’s settled, he’s appreciated, he’s much-loved by us all and he and all the strikers get really hard work with TC.

“I think it’s a feather in TC’s cap that goal as well, I could just see that twisting and turning and the way he shoots across the keeper. He deserves a mention for all the work he does with them.

“And when we’re bitching about missing chances, that’s nowt to do with TC, that’s down to them. When they get goals it’s down to TC’s coaching!”

The Town boss was also pleased with the way his three subs - Carlos Edwards, Frank Nouble and Anthony Wordsworth - performed: “Carlos came on and did a selfless job in terms of watching LuaLua because he was a threat.

“They worked hard and that’s what it should be about. I hate it when you put subs on and they have a little bit of a sulk up. It’s hard work that running around, lungs burning. They did it today, it was good.”

Overall, he believes his side is progressing in the right direction: “We’ve won the game, we’ve got a clean sheet and I think we’ve played some good, entertaining football as well, if that makes us getting better.

“I think we’ve retained the ball better than we have done in the past. I think we’re making little steps towards being a better team.”

Meanwhile, Derby have put academy boss Darren Wassall in charge of Tuesday's game against the Blues at Pride Park.

Steve McClaren, a former assistant manager of the Rams, is now believed to be the frontrunner to succeed Nigel Clough, who was sacked on Saturday.

Does that mean Murphy and Nouble are not working hard enough on the training field?

I dont doubt Tc's ability at all, but where are the goals coming from if Dids gets injured , it doesnt seem like the other strikers are responding to the training does it? Maybe the likes of nouble just arent good enough?....coyb

he can't be that good with only one of our strikers actually scoring a goal

Saturday was a superb win. Brighton were 6 games unbeaten before that. It's so nice looking at the table and seeing us up there and counting how many points off 6th place we are and actually being realistic in doing so! Just hope the other lads from midfield + Murphy/Nouble etc start helping McGoldrick so we're not too reliant on him.

Dissboy, I don't think it's down to the likes of Nouble not being good enough, I just think he's more of a forward than a sticker, when he finally does get going (which hopefully he will do) I don't think he's ever going to get more than 10-12 goals in a season if he was starting most games, he's more of a target man, someone for the likes of McGoldrick to play off. The problem is we haven't got another real natural finisher at the club, well not one who's ready anyway. Hopefully SEB will come in but he's a long way off being match fit.

kalypso - Murpy scored against Yeovil, so two of our strikers have scored goals

TC and MM's hard work is paying off.

Nice to see us in the top half of the table..let's hope we can have a good week and actually stay in the top half for a while (preferably the rest of the season).

Q..When was the last time we were in the top half for more than 3 weeks running?..i'm guessing it was around the time Magilton was here?

It was under Paul Jewell Lightingboy for one month from 27th Sept to end of November 2011 during which time between 18th & 22nd October were in the last play off position!!!
Under Roy Keane did even better being in a play off postion from 7th August 2010 til 28th Sept when we dropped to 7th;but didnt drop into bottom half until 28th November after losing to Norwich 4-1
