Town Keeping Close Eye on Taylor
Town Keeping Close Eye on Taylor

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted that striker Paul Taylor got 77 minutes under his belt in his first game on loan back at his old club Peterborough on Saturday. Posh won 1-0 away at Rotherham.

McCarthy says the Blues will be keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old, who is continuing his comeback from his serious foot injury: “We had a scout there watching him. He was involved in everything, playing in behind two strikers. We’ll have him watched every game.”

He says the loan deal, which runs until November 2nd, includes incentives encouraging Peterborough, who are next in action at home to Preston on Saturday, to utilise him regularly during his spell: “There’ll be a clause in it that if he doesn’t play, unless he’s injured, they’ll probably have to pay more.

“Premier League teams do that all the time. They give you a player, but there’s a penalty clause if you don’t play them. I guess that’s fair because that’s what you want them to do.”

Regarding loan players coming into Portman Road, McCarthy says he has no need for any at present: “Where am I going to put somebody if I’ve brought them in on loan? And who am I going to get who is better than the ones that I’ve got at this moment?

“The loans are still there whenever they’re needed, but I’m not going to bring anybody in and play them because [the players already here are] playing well and I’m not desperately in need of anybody.”

Meanwhile, former Blues keeper Arran Lee-Barrett is on trial at Portsmouth, having spent the last month at Millwall as cover for their second-choice glovesman, another ex-Town man Andy Marshall, who picked up a minor injury.

It is good to hear Mick noticing the position Taylor is taking up - behind the front two -with Peterborough, the side who know his abilities best. While he can play out wide or as a striker, it is certainly my view that he is most dangerous when running at a defence through the middle, whether behind one or two forwards.

Agreed there Len_Brennan.

I'd like to see him utilised in a 4411 formation, just in behind McGoldrick. Or, out wide in a 442.

But is McGoldrick the man to play up top in a 4-4-1-1? at the moment you could say we play that way but with Murphy up top and McGoldrick in behind

I'd also love to see us go 4-4-1-1 with Taylor just behind McGoldrick. I saw someone ask if McGoldrick can do it as a lone striker but I read McCarthy talk about him last night saying he played a lone striker when he was banging in goals for fun at Coventry, so i don't see that being a problem.

I'm sure if he does well, it'll be Hyam he comes into the team for to add an extra attacking dimension to our team. He'd be ideal in behind Murphy and McGoldrick with Anderson, Skuse and Tunnicliffe around him.

As I posted some months ago, I think Taylor will be given the push. He's damaged goods, he allegedly likes the juice and agro, he's not a MM player. His non selection last season was blamed on foot recovery, but thats clearly an excuse, and he's now out to grass at the Posh. The only reason to keep an eye on him is to gain evidence to support a sale valuation and to make sure he fulfills the terms of his loan

now thats progress, how many times over last 4 or 5 years have we had to endure being a stepping stone club for players to get their season going before they returned to their club and walked into the first team,or got good offers from higher leagues.if they did well here we knew they wern't staying . good to see the shoe on the other foot!
